The Trail Buster is a RC version of a Tough Truck competition or TTC Top Truck Challenge event. The Trail Buster was held at RC Excitement in Fitchburg, MA. Matt Higgins of RC Truck Stop attended, covered and competed. Classes included 1.9 and 2.2 scale rock crawling trucks. Events included sled pull, obstacle course and hill climb. Many competitors used the Axial Wraith and Honcho SCX10. Trucks climbed dirt, moved through ditches, navigated mud and tried overall a variety of other obstacles while competing against the clock.
Thanks! My longtime friend, Dave, drove my Wraith (and did great for someone who hasn't touched a transmitter in well over a decade). My 1.9 Pink Taco ran great on the sled pull, obstacle course and hill climb. My 2.2 SCX10 did just as well on the hill climb and obstacle course, but got stumped by the sled pull.
Thanks for watching and posting. There were a lot of cool trucks there. The blue XJ worked pretty good
yeah, thanks again for the use of an amazing rig! That was a great event!
These guys at RC Excitement do a great job and mix it up--it's different every time I go up there. I am spoiled in that RC Madness which is even closer also has scale specific courses outside. You would absolutely love both locations, Chris. We're also putting in an obstacle course at Pin Shop Hobbies which is even closer to where I live.--Matt Higgins
Thank you very much, Sean. Glad you enjoyed it.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
Right on. If he likes RC, he should love the main RC Truck Stop website. Happy belated father's Day.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
Yes. There was a good mix, but the Baja Claw tires seemed to do well. What's cool is that since the whole competition isn't on one type of rock, many tires will work well. Guys have done well with Axial, Pro-Line, RC4WD and Pit Bull Tires
These particular events are held in New England. I would highly suggest talking to your local hobby store. The cool thing about a scale obstacle course is that you don't need a whole lot of space. Good luck!--Matt Higgins
Yes, it was a timed obstacle course with no penalties for things like using reverse or hitting gates.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
Thank you. The hill climb is a blast. It is such a thrill to be able to break over the top.--Matt Higgins
Thanks for inspiration on my track! Nice trucks and scale parts.
the rc truck stop did great! looked like a blast; cool video!!!
07:28 Whoa that red rockcrawler have articulated 4x4 steering? man i love it ! :) thanks for this video
Yes, I believe it is a Axial SCX10 fitted with the Pro-Line XJ body
The more I watch these videos, the more Im getting hooked. A crawler is my next purchase.
nice video, that hill climb was awesome!
Nice. I use those axles on one of my crawlers. Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
It gets some dry lubricant . . . on occasion. I have found gobs of grease on the driveshafts and universal axles do more harm than good as dirt sticks to the grease.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
Very cool, John. Thanks for watching and commenting!--Matt Higgins
That is my truck. The squeaking noise comes from the MIP drive shafts. I built them using a dry lube as to not attrack dirt and cause premature wear, but they need to be rebuilt.--Matt Higgins
Thanks. You can check that truck others like it at RC Truck Stop. Thanks again
That Honcho in the beginning was killin' it!
Thank you very much. That is the RC Truck Stop Honcho.--Matt Higgins, Rc Truck Stop
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins
Thank you for the kind words on the video. As you suspect, you will be better off with a purpose-built crawler. That said, try this for fun: 1) Open the diffs on your Redcat and clean oil as much of the grease as possible, 2) Pack the diffs with Silly Putty, 3) Install the smallest pinion you can get, 4) See what you can crawl over.
For a ready-to-run Axial you can expect to spend between $360 to about $380. You will also need to get a battery and charger, so the cost out the door will be higher. It is money well spent. You can also always find some great deals on a used truck. Do you have any hobby-grade RC vehicles now? If not, I can provide you will a little bit more information.--Matt Higgins
This event was dominated by Axials. I believe I saw a Venom Creeper during signups, but don't recall seeing it run. There have been guys there with Tamiyas in the past.
Thank you very much. It is greatly appreciated!--Matt Higgins
That song is "Motocross" and can most easily be found in the Mac iMovie music library. Thanks for watching and the nice comment.--Matt Higgins
Thanks, Paul. No harm done.--Matt Higgins
Those are Pro-Line Interco TSL SX Super Swamper TSL 2.2 tires.--Matt Higgins
totally diggin the track. so many ideas how to improve mine!
Every once in awhile, it gets treated nicely and gets some new dry lubricant added. No grease for my scale trucks' exposed parts.--Matt Higgins
Exactly! I rather have to suffer through a squeak than have dirt filled grease actually wearing things out. I know Speed Cream is a bearing lube, but I am not sure if it's a dry lube. Check out TrakPower Krytech lubricant.--Matt Higgins
You're in luck. They're are some great scale rock crawling clubs in CA. Where about in CA are you? Also, post your question on the RC Truck Stop Facebook wall.--Matt Higgins
This is an awesome video. I have been trying to decide which rig to buy in the 1/10 scale rock crawling/trail riding. My buddy already has an Wraith so I wanted something different to kick the crap out of his. Well I am going to step up and buy a Wraith and we will have to settle on an up-grade war. Thanks for posting the Vid...
The pink scx-10 made it look easy . It ain't IM guessing cool vid expert driver :-)
Thank you, Chris. It didn't even occur to me that kmgpfeiffer was referring to two Axial Honchos that are the same color. If this is what he is referring to I am willing to bet these aren't the only two pink Honchos out there. I, of course, did not copy anyone.--Matt Higgins
Haha. You're too kind. The truck makes me look good.--Matt Higgins
I'm sure there are some active clubs in Texas. You don't need me to tell you that it's a big state, so I don't know what is near you. I highly suggest starting with Facebook. Ask around about clubs. Find or start a Texas RC Facebook Group and see if you can drum up interest. Another good place is to start is with local hobby shops. Good luck!--Matt Higgins
No, it is my Honcho that I built some time ago.
--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
Sounds like a cool rig. My point is "custom" is completely subjective. To some people your rig isn't all that custom since you didn't weld up a frame yourself or craft a body half out of styrene or machine a bunch of parts. Point is there was a pretty big variety of rigs at this event and the ones like it. personally, I love it when a newer guy shows up with a stock truck and runs. I also like checking out the custom rigs--whether mild or wild.
No; I know the truck you're thinking of, but that is my Axial SCX10 Honcho.--Matt Higgins
I really like that blue XJ awesome truck
Yes, all of these trucks are considered 1/10 scale.--Matt Higgins
in respect , both Matt and JEM built their respective trucks with in a few weeks of each other , and being friends with both, neither knew what the other was doing.
Yes, they are. Great eye. Check out a man that goes by Bowtie on RCCrawler. Tell him RC Truck Stop sent you. If you can't find him there, go to RC Truck Stop and email us under the Contact Us page.
--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
There are two classes--1.9 and 2.2. While the Wraith is, of course, a 2.2 vehicle, the rules allow it to also compete in the 1.9 class. It may not look ideal, but it did very well.
Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins
Thanks for the compliment. Also, thank you for watching and commenting.
as a big fan of Djmedic I'm sure he would not approve of kmgpfeiffer comment as he like yourself Sir are out to bring the RC hobby to new people and share the joy found in it
and sure there are bound to be those who do the same thing as someone else but it shows how there are great minds out there thinking the same thing
I tip my hat to anyone who helps others and that is what you as well as Aaron do thanks and keep up the good work
Glad that you enjoyed the video, overall. I realize that the music isn't to everyone's taste, but sometimes I'm using it to down at the racetrack with is only a few feet away. Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
A 45-turn motor may be ideal for this type of competition, but I do not believe a 55-turn will hurt you.--Matt Higgins
You'll love the Wraith. I have never grown tired of mine. Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins
Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Sorry to hear you don't like the slomo. I happen to like it. Personal preference, I guess. Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins
It varies at every comp. Sure, there are a couple of stock vehicles (it's awesome that these guys show up), but for the most part all the trucks are different and all are tweaked/modified in different ways. How do you define custom? My SCX10's are custom (in my opinion), but have stock frames. There are a few guys who compete with rigs with handmade frames and they really don't perform any better than the other trucks.
Looks like there were quite a few using the Baja Claw tire.
yep, i normally used SPEED CREAM & WD 40.
NO grease, cause things will stick to grease
that was the best video i ever saw but the the two by two logs is water under it
Glad you liked the video. To find similar competitions near you, check out some Facebook Groups. Go to RC Truck Stop's Facebook Page and post a message looking for hobbyists near you.--Matt Higgins
nice, been hooked
those are so cool i have one 2! still working on though
Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching and commenting. I hope you get a chance to check out some of our other videos and the main RC Truck Stop site.--Matt Higgins
Apparently 'crawling' and 'pin it to win it' are the same thing to you guys?
I am guessing it was a 1.9 comp (sorry but Wraiths look silly with 1.9s on)..
Very nice vid tho, looked like a fun meet :-)
Ah, thanks for the explanation. I guess I need to get out more.--Matt Higgins, RC Truck Stop
great video,I Love It.
great video...but the soundtrack reminds me of a video game, just same songs repeating over and over. otherwise very cool.
Best vid!!!! gotta up grade my frame
Thank you. Thanks for watching and commenting.--Matt Higgins
nice video !
for example my scx10 has the stock frame but wraith axles (wroncho) with home made links, ax10 shocks and more
custom meaning home made not just a few bought upgrades
Thanks for watching and commenting. Check out some of the other videos and make sure you go to RC Truck Stop's main website. There's lots of articles there that will help you dial in your Wraith. Good luck and have fun doing battle with your buddy. Thanks again.--Matt Higgins
He made some mistakes in the clips shown, but it's edited highlights. He may have done well overall.--Matt Higgins
super cool just wish more different trucks other than axials. maybe something like tamiya tundras or hilux will be better
Great vid. I have a 1:10 redcat volcano exp. Can that be turned into one of these rock crawlers or should I buy a purpose built crawler??
would love to try this with my rs10.
Thank you

I respectfully believe you are entitled to your opinion, but I completely disagree and sincerely believe your assertion couldn't be further from the truth. I have over 25 years of RC experience and have professionally worked in RC media since 1998. I appreciate Aaron Bidochka's efforts and I believe he does a great job connecting with his audience and giving them what they want, but my work, my content is a reflection of my experience and RC knowledge and a copy of no one's work.--Matt Higgins
nice vid
where is the best place to get scale parts
