"Similarly, the drill sergeants repeatedly found that among the raw recruits there were men so abysmally untaught that they did not know left from right, and hence could not step off on the left foot as all soldiers should. To teach these lads how to march, the sergeants would tie a wisp of hay to the left foot and a wisp of straw to the right; then, setting the men to march, they would chant, “Hay-foot, straw-foot, hay-foot, straw-foot”-and so on, until everybody had caught on. A common name for a green recruit in those days was “strawfoot.”
For anyone new to this artist, there's a great short documentary (Dutch I think?) called The Preacher that was made about him and 16 Horsepower a long while ago and is still on UA-cam.
why havnt i heard about him until now! wow amazing i could listen to this all day long just need a cd by him this song made my day this is real music the 1 who dislike this is a deaf person who is mad cuz he or she cant hear this masterpiece ! wonderful
Holy Moly; what a good version. Can`t believe I haven`t heard this until now. But, that`s also a good thing; now I have something nice in front of me. (think I have heard it seven times already)
Guess you didn't hear me, when I told you for the first time Don't you worry none, it won't be the last All I need, a floorboard and a wooden shoe Step aside and let my lady through Hay-foot, straw-foot Low we lay 'em down Hay-foot, straw-foot Covering ground See the high priest he took my place When the judge looks at me, he sees his son's face Not gonna join you in your tower of Babel, boy Tired of that talk, and I'm sick of that noise I am not alone, looks can be deceiving When we get down to it, you're talking when you should be leavin' I've been in Nebraska, it reminded me of Spain All the questions loaded, all my answers the same Let us not mince our words, let's stay true this time I need your forgiveness, just like you need mine Tell me how it is that you don't want what is given It ain't no sin, boy, to be forgiven
Woven Hand came to my city the day I started the first day of a new job (night shift). I'm still debating if I made the right choice not to go. Job security or perhaps one of the best live musical experiences I would ever experience....
Wonderful. I'm glad someone took their time and made this movie, it gives us an intimate view of DEE playing his music. Does anyone have any idea about the tunings he favors? I know he's used shitloads of tunings...but not what tunings.
Let us not mince our words let's say it true this time I need your forgiveness Just like you need mine Tell me how it is that You don't want what He's given It ain't no sin, son To be forgiven
I have a Goldtone Banjola that I really like but it is smaller than the one he is using. I'd be interested in a full sized instrument for the volume and tone.
Goldtone sells a Banjola for around 900 bucks! They have a deluxe that is much more expensive too, though. My question is whether or not it would be compatible with nylon strings, which is what David uses.
Search for pollman mandolin banjo.. Unfortunately these type of instruments aren't build anymore, except by some company goldtone where they are 2000 dollars or something. Would love to get one of those antique ones!
Wouldn't know that. You're right though, as far as i know almost all banjos, and the banjola are made for steel strings, thus a much stronger neck to support the added tension. You can imagine that if you put on nylon (or nylgut, heard about it never seen it though) strings the neck might not be under enough tension.
Love the song very much. I know, it`s not very much connected, but can you recommend me any book about the Civil war in the USA. For some reason, this song provokes some connections for me. Thanks in advance!

Its so nice to know more about that! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Really? How did you come across this information and more importantly, where can I go to find out more?
Appreciate the context.
But what's the difference between hay and straw?
@@Wielaica Straw is thick, tough and yellowish, hay is thin, flexible and greenish. Hay is dried grass and straw is dried cerial plants.
There s so much truth in the sound of his voice and his banjo. Great guy.
This is so, so haunting and beautiful. This man can do no musical wrong.
opened my mind's eye forever grateful.
I found this dude about a year ago and kinda pissed i didn't discover him and 16 horsepower sooner lol
You may want to search for Woven Hand, that's his most recent band name. There's a nice NPR Desk recording here on youtube.
Outstanding artist, and I guess this is my favorite performance of this song, ever.

If someone were to make accurate reproductions of the original Pollman mandolin-banjos, would anyone have much interest in them?
I would! You got one?
I have a Goldtone Banjola that I really like but it is smaller than the one he is using. I'd be interested in a full sized instrument for the volume and tone.
@@cameronsmith6755 really? I had a goldtone and a pollman once , and the body of the goldtone was much bigger
