We have planted 12 plants of 4 varieties here in Oklahoma this spring. Looking forward to seeing them grow. Seeing your prime arks is encouraging because mine are only about 6 inches tall
I'm going to need you to make about six or eight videos a day for the next couple weeks. I tore my AC joint in my shoulder so I have nothing to do for the next month except watch UA-cam.
Praying for your quick recovery! We're getting so much rain that I have to wait for a better forecast before making videos. I also need to mow and the ground is too wet for that. I have Asian persimmons, Muscadines, blackberry, pawpaw and pomegranate long videos coming soon.
You’ve got us looking forward to our PAF being ready in the next few weeks. Our Arapaho haven’t done very well, need to clear out a few more trees for more sun exposure. Apache just down in similar conditions are much larger.
The other thornless varieties, Osage, Ouachita etc.. I have them all I think are now on their third year. They’ve gotten much bigger and sweeter. The first year they were tart or bland, second year just slightly sweeter. Now they are really good but not Ponca or Sweetie pie sweetness level. Your harvest should be awesome!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a couple of prime ark freedoms and I harvested my first berry. I was hoping to eat it immediately in the garden, but it had some teeny tiny insects crawling around on it. I'm glad I noticed before I shoved it in my mouth. 😊
Why keep topping the vines? Seems random with different heights vs waiting till they get top of trellis height. Thanks, I just planted a few plants of Freedom.
I have close to 100 fruit trees to attend to, if I don’t prune the blackberries on sight they’ll be neglected. You are correct it’s preferred to prune at the same height if possible. I also want to prune them way below the top of the trellis because the laterals gets way to long if not pruned.
@@TreehouseVineyard Thanks. I've read where the laterals will fruit after pruning. Is that true and also why you prune? How long into the season can you keep topping to produce laterals and fruit if that's the case? Sorry for the multiple questions. Trying to learn.
@@C3Voyage lateral length will depend on your preference because they can get really long. But the amount of fruit you get is massive compared to just one single cane. I usually get 6-7 laterals from pruning and they produce almost the same amount as the single unpruned cane per lateral.
My Prime Ark Freedoms are just about done now on the floricanes 2nd year canes . This years primocanes are flowering already in May towards the tops on unpruned canes . I thought it was supposed to be fall .
I think you get a small production on spring for primocanes and decent production for fall. My PAF are probably done in 3 weeks but some of the canes are done this week. Ponca, sweetie pie are next then Triple Crown should be ready in 2 weeks.
I'm hoping the older they get, they'll get more sweet. I did get some early ripening berries that are a lot sweeter than last year. PAF will be more for processing like you mentioned but I think I'll make wine with them this year along with my muscadines and Asian persimmons later in the year.
@@TreehouseVineyard I made a few gallons of wine from PAF two years ago and again last year. The two year old wine is just getting drinkable without mixing with something sweet. I haven’t even tried last years wine yet.
@@eardw2251 My wife and I are no wine connoisseurs hehe so we like it sweet, we don't drink dry. But we have planty of friends who likes it dry so I'll be making some dry and I'm adding lots of sugar for ours.
Most of my older thornless are tart and bland on their first year fruiting. I sampled some today and they are sweet, not Ponca sweet but better than the young PAF.
@@TreehouseVineyard me too! You’re likely more skilled than I at hitting a final sweetness level, but adding more sugar in the beginning just gave me a LOT of alcohol -16%. If you have a good recipe I’d love to try it as the current crop is starting to ripen.
Interesting video. Thanks. I think those berries are still too shiny to be ripe. Try picking them when they start to lose their luster. If you wait until they become totally dull/matte black, you've waited too long.
I used to have many wild blackberries in my front yard. They were thorny, sour and tiny berries, very invasive. A nightmare, I spent about six years to eliminate them then introduced my favorite blueberries and raspberries there. I recently had a chance to taste some jumbo blackberries produced in Mexico the max size was 12-14g. Very tasty, all of my family members loved them, so I decided to get black berries back to my home. I did the research, prime ark freedom was the winner and I put my order on starkbros in Feb, I planted them in my backyard the best spots. Hopefully I will get a harvest in next year.
@@xueliangfang awesome! I’m sure you’ll enjoy your PAF. I also try to remove any wild blackberries around the house and orchard because of the thorns! I have plenty of wild at the back of the property for wildlife. You can also try triple crown, big sweet berries.

I bought PAF and Ponca as 6 inch bare root sticks as well. I didn’t think they would grow so quick after a year . I’m sure yours will be the same.

I think soaking them first in water will get them off the berries. How did you like the flavor of PAF and how old are they?
I’m in Ocala Florida and mine are coming in now as well.
Great! How old are they?
@@TreehouseVineyard planted bare root in January. Getting some fruit now. I know next year it will be better.
@@davidwelty9763 After one year with the new Primocanes, the fruit yield was massive. The branches starts snapping even with the trellis.

Mine are almost always tart. Makes for good jam and cobblers, but for fresh eating, they can be a little surprising.

Thanks for the advice! I'm still learning the art of timed picking with all the fruits in the orchard.
Time to make some jam
We love eating them fresh but since I planted for 50 people, we need to make jam, jelly and wine!
I'm seeing those tiny insects on mine, from researching it I think they are thrips
You are correct! Fortunately we do not have those yet but I'm ok with a little protein, or soak them in water for a bit.
What is the average weight for this variety?
9-12g according to the internet. They do get pretty heavy when I fill up a small basket.
