I remember Victorian day at school. We had a poem we had to learn for Victorian ready and I forgot to learn it. So glad I wasn't chosen to say it on my own
A very good video and one that reinforces how lucky we are to be alive today rather than then. I was a teacher, late 60s to '08 and saw, during that time, both extremes of colleagues from martinet to liberal. Until the late '50s, class sizes were huge by modern standards, up to 55 children in some cases, so teachers had to be strict in their routine to get everything done, or they'd be in trouble with autocratic Principals and Inspectorate, who all too often tended to treat their staff like recalcitrant children. The best teachers did and do, operate on the firm but kind principle with warm humour and a questioning imaginative spirit encouraged as long as the boundaries of mutual respect are not over-stepped.
Well that was probably wat it was like in the Victorian times read the book street Child u will learn alot about the Victorian times schools, environment and etc
It was a common practice in the 70's, the child who could not perform a reading or writing exercise was sent to a corner of the classroom and donkey ears were placed on him. At that time, no one imagined that this child suffered from some trauma or a learning disorder, such as autism or dyslexia or other problems related to his development that were not understood at that time.
That was back in the 70’s?! Wow! That’s terrible that they did that to kids! And you’re right, people back then (Victorian era) didn’t know that the child could have been suffering or dealing with all the disorders you mentioned. That was mainly due to the fact that the medical industry wasn’t nearly as developed as it is now today. Although, here’s the kicker! Donkeys have long been stereotyped to be dumb, even though none of that is true! The irony of the donkey ears that you mentioned earlier, is that donkeys have been proven to be extremely smart, even smarter than horses! And the reason for why they’re known to be “stubborn” is because they’re known to have a strong, self-preservation instinct, and believe it or not they are known to be able to critically think before they make a decision. So technically, they were calling kids smart asses in a good way!😂😅
How exactly is school different today? Well, we can clearly see a difference between strict acts towards students, teachers made sure students learned and that is a huge difference because teachers don't care any more. I may be 12, but this is my opinion. If you do not agree, forgive me and I respect your opinion too. I would rather live in the Victorian era because of the education. And the teacher is right because we should be lucky we even get an education.
What you stated is valid an correct do not be afraid or limited because you think or are 13 physical age is nothing instead keep up your mental age my friend you are on the right path maturity and how you hold yourself your values is what makes your age. Many people are 50 and act like spoiled 8 year old brats as stated physical age does not matter shoot for your dream the stars good day. Remember this many "kids" back then were considered adults at your age and some nations still do today!
On a more positive note though, there is much more awareness and knowledge of dyslexia and other learning difficulties/disabilities than there was in Victorian times. In those days students who struggled with learning were seen as 'slow' or 'thick' and often made to wear the dunce's cap. Also modern school buildings have to have wheelchair access. I had learning support in secondary school for maths as it's my weak subject. Plus corporal punishment is now illegal in many countries. I was at school in the 90s and 2000s
Your point is taken, Black Rose. Please see my main comment. When you are older - you'd be 15 or 16 now - you could read Dickens's "Hard Times" to get a handle on how the teacher Mr McChoakumchild operated with facts, facts and facts without humour, imagination or joy of learning.
2019??? There was a teacher just like a Victorian she even had a cane and all the Victorian stuff in this museum but it's a roleplay she taught us strict i was one of the important people the main one I was a drunk butcher witch smoked 0-0 and stuff i got interviewed by the strict teacher and I was at fav and I was laughing and she was nice to me........she shouted at lots of people XD everyone laughed at me I held a empty Victorian alcohol bottle and a cigarette from victorians in a case I feel so bad but the museum was haunted AND SMELLED BAD AT MY PART IN MY BUTCHER PLACE
I grew up in Melbourne, Australia, where all schools are Victorian schools. By the way, if you've read any amount of literature from the period, you'll know that, while teachers were stricter than today, they were not angry or unfriendly to the children without cause, or even for things like not knowing how to pronounce a word. They were harsh on misbehaviour (although that included laziness, bad manners and bad posture).
Kids shouldn't have to fear both their teachers AND their parents. They need a place to feel safe. It's no wonder older generations grew up to become abusive. Abuse creates abusers, and the toxic cycle continues.
I had a strict teacher when I was a child like this teacher in the video,I used to think she was so mean when I was 8,Now that I am an adult,I miss my first grade teacher, she was right always,I found out that my first grade teacher has died of cancer, she was 79, I am now 48 years old, I will miss Mrs.Virginia Anonas,Rip to my teacher 😥😥😥

today its the teachers who fear the students cos teachers cant effectively discipline their students without fear of legal consequences and/or losing their job.

I enjoyed the video and reminds me about a museum "The Way We We're " (long since closed) at Wigan Pier. They use to act out, and one was the class room. You could actually sit in and experience that day, would make the mistresses here look like Mary Propping 😂 School then wasn't very welcomed in those days for working people, because they'd lose wages, (children was sent to work). So education was something that was imposed. It didn't meet with expectations, (more a disadvantage being working class and able to read and write).
