"Died of dysentery" patch is freaking hilarious. Perfect patch on many levels. I think I need to get that for myself. Well done! Fun unpackaging video on a topic that I have long been invested in. Been building and rebuilding BOB/GO bag/GH bag since my late teens. Few decades later and still not perfect. I tend to overdo it. Main thing is to have the skills and mindset. Even so, having added supplies and provisions will greatly help a bad situation more tenable. I figure I can toss stuff as I go if need be. "SHBD" I like that.
I think it’s one of those things that you never stop trying to improve on. I do the same thing. This comes in and this goes out almost constantly. So if you’re crazy your not alone at it 😂
Coffee filters are probably THE MOST overlooked/underrated thing for an SBHB bag that truly has 1000 + 1 uses. I have 3 different sizes from the 4 cup up to the BUNN 1.5 gallon commercial specialty size.
Excellent point. At the very least they are a first stage for water purification. Starting with a filter extends the life of your filter system or at least gets the chunks out before you add tabs or boil.
Good luck for Joey the Roady, and good on everyone that helped, I am not a US citizen, and not very wealthy, but I would help too if I could, nice job on all that helped the guy, he seems like a good person.
A couple of things that people leave out of emergency bags that I have found to be useful when evacuating due to fires in California. Socks and underwear, you can wear the same shirts and pants for a while but socks and underwear can get real funky and lead to infections/rashes if they aren't changed regularly. Hygiene kits, with all the mini things toothbrush, deodorant and soap etc. I include unscented bathing wipes like they use on old people in homes in case of lack of bathing facilities. Finally digestion medication, one for stopping diarrhea, a gentle laxative and a one for heartburn/gas. Odds are you might end up eating things you aren't used to and being under stress can really mess up digestion. Oddly also M&Ms, they travel well don't really melt and nice treat. Those are things I found handy everyone's needs and plans are different though so people's mileage may vary lol.
Being a Paramedic being able to keep warm and dry is key. Enjoy the tarp I have a similar one. And you are very welcome. It was fun to see all the stuff. I am sending an additional gift, something to sleep in hint hint.
You guys are a kick! Joey, congratulations on your new Something Bad Happened Bag, though I hope nothing bad ever happens. Cant wait to see future follow-ups. 🍻
We call that a SHABD situation. Somebody’s Having A Bad Day. I hope those days stay far away from Joey the Roadie and Dad and their families. But, it is nice to know that you are prepared for it. God Bless and good luck.
All my family and friends are getting "Bad Day" bags for Christmas. They'll be individualized to where I think they will need them most. Some I think will be stored in cars some will be for home or emergency go bags.
That’s amazing! Hopefully they will never need them but statistically you gotta know at least one of them will have to bust theirs open somewhere along the way. Good for you!
One of the best things I ever did in GHB (SBHB) planning was a thought exercise that detailed the away location(s) I was likely to be, possible routes home (including topo maps that showed elevations, train tracks, water sources, etc.), and then going through in my head step-by-step what I thought the trip would look like and at different times of the year. I dumped a lot of gear from my first SBHB, because my primary location was within 30 miles of home and about the same to my alternate location. My current SBHB is very different because my primary off-site locations are now hundreds of miles from home. I strongly encourage Joey to perform the same exercise. Some of the items he received may be set on a shelf until later, or the exercise might show him where gaps are in his preps. Also, as a former IT guy with a similar beard, enjoy the loot! 😀
I would love to do a dual adventure with him and try out some gear to see how it goes. That would be fun! And thank you for so easily adopting our new label of SBHB 😀

Had a friend that had a Dr Who "telephone booth?" Sitting outside their barn for years. I haven't watched the show since the late 1980's though. I think I watched it every Saturday when the weather was crappy.
I had a few years ago I peeled back the skin on my finger really bad helping someone as I was walking out the door at work. I went to go wash and bandage myself and there were no bandaids in any of the first aid kits at work. So I ended up wrapping my hand in some plastic and had her tape it really good I rode my bicycle home from work about two miles and blood ended up dripping the whole way. I stopped off at the grocery store with my hand up in the air and had someone buy me some bandages and wrapping. In the end I sent my boss a picture of my mangled hand above a cooked pizza that I made for lunch that morning. I went back into work on Monday and wore an extra glove on that hand. It healed just fine. I did spray blood all over a work table which was kinda cool.

There’s been a couple things we’ve run into like that. As far as the gear list, UA-cam only allows a few links in the description box so we can’t add them all here.

Did you know that you can actually see black in the dead of night? I just wish the waist belt padding was longer and maybe a bit wider to fit around your hip bone. But, dark blue will disappear at night?
Any solid color will show up night or day. Breaking up the pattern makes it a lot easier to conceal. Blue, however looks much less deliberate like you’re not actually trying to hide.
Some things to add to your kit. Safety sunglasses. You never know when you'll need either sunglasses or safety glasses. Headlamp & batteries, A small saw, for shelter building and processing firewood. Bug repellent. Sun screen. Some kind of sports drink/dehydration treatment, you need salts to keep your muscles from aching. Silcock key, for water collection in urban environments. Those filters and even boiling don't remove all the chemical contaminants from drinking water. It saved my life when I was homeless. A sleep pad, for obvious reasons. Either a wool blanket, sleeping bag or hammock top quilt. Emergency shelters are often cold and so is sleeping rough. Extra socks, look after your feet! Flip flops, public showers are disgusting! You'll want them if you have to stay in a disaster shelter. Morale items, this is often overlooked in survival packs but the most important thing in survival is morale, if you give up, there is nothing that can save you. I keep an old mp3 player w/batteries, snickers bars, dehydrated food, coffee/hot chocolate with fixings, a deck of cards and a photo of my family just for morale. Also if you have bears where you live, bear spray (also good for 2 legged attackers)
Something to remember: you have to be able to carry this pack. I've been camping and hiking for over 50 years. I've never needed an axe or a saw (for example). Most multitools (specifically SAK Huntsman) have a small saw built in. I've never needed anything more. If you're carrying a bivy and/or tarp and 2 survival blankets, you may not be cozy, but you will survive. I do have a wool blanket and a fleece sleeping bag in my car. I strongly suggest checking out backpacking gear. Also, bear in mind that most folks will be in an urban or suburban environment. They aren't gonna be in the backwoods.
@@lskazalski I've been homeless, twice (house fire & flooding) and the saw is for urban environments. Pallets are plentiful but very inconvenient to move with any amount of stealth. I'm thinking silky pocketboy or a bocco. Also any park areas are usually pretty picked over for any easily accessible firewood. Emergency blankets while useful tend to rip easily, noisey and are just uncomfortable, besides there's a better chance he'd need it in a disaster shelter or the office than on the road. I've used both, I prefer a real blanket and those hammock top quilts are fairly light.
@YabbaDabbaDoTime You make a good point. I do have a folding saw in my camp kit that I was thinking about retiring but I'm gonna rethink that. It weighs about 5 ounces. Thing is, we need to keep this pack down to a reasonable weight. I currently have a 20L day pack in the back of my car. It has the 10 essentials and weighs less than 10#. I also have a car emergency kit with a silcock key and an EMT kit in the back of my car.
@@lskazalski I understand the weight issue. I've also been forced to use my kit on a number of occasions. Those comfort items might seem unnecessary but when things have gone to pot, those things that give you some normalcy really help relieve stress. Instead of a terrible situation it's a not so great camping trip. That might sound crazy but real survival situations are stressful and more than a little terrifying. An extra pound or two is really worth the weight.
I'm new to your channel, and I have only seen two of your videos thus far, but I was looking at the limited list of items in the Get Home Bag for Joey and saw you'd picked Readywise for his food source... Can I recommend you find something else? My reasoning is that they claim it has a 25 year shelf life, however that's not entirely accurate... Much of the Readywise food has some kind of soy product/protein/isolate in it, and can spoil if exposed to varied temperature differences (hot, cold, room temperature, basement temperature, etc.) and could potentially cause a real problem... 💩 I understand it's meant to be a budget worthy purchase, but I would suggest that you find a different source that doesn't have soy... I can research additional sources of food that don't contain soy, if you want, just wanted it to be said, in case anyone else has Readywise in there preps or bags... Cheers from Scotland! 🏴🦇
Thanks for pointing that out. Mostly the choice is based on it being stable for most conditions but not necessarily looking to try to keep it around for its full shelf life. Having lighter foods to keep on hand is the objective.
@@dadbudgetadventures I fully understand that, I just unfortunately have some bad experience with Readywise as I backpacked across America and I only had it in my pack for 11 months and it wasn't pleasant... Going from Alaska to California to Florida to New England, it wasn't good... 🤷♂️ Maybe I should have taken an Uber instead of using my feet? Or flew like a bat! There are freezedried meals on a company called Thrive Life that actually faired far better, but I had to have them shipped along my route... Again, just sharing my experience, and I don't expect you to take my word for it, I didn't UA-cam my adventures, I just lived them...
First time viewer here and I really like your style. Liked and subbed. Also I'm allowing the commercials to run for you. I normally skip them but for you... no problem. However, there are 5 MINUTES of commercials after 5 minutes of video. So far. I'm writing this while one of them plays at 2:52 long. This is truly painful. I just thought you'd want to know how much of your time they're taking up with this stuff and why people might be skipping them. I'm not a youtuber but if you have any control over the length of the commercials, you might want to look at it. Ok. 8 minutes of video and another 4:52 seconds of ads trying to play. I love ya brother but that's just too much. Just FYI.
Thank you so much for tolerating that. I don’t have that level of control but I certainly condone clicking past those stupidly long ads. That being said, I’m glad you’re here and truly appreciate the support.
I would love to send some things for His bag.....could you pm me and let me know an address to send things to. I tried sending something from the list and it didnt' work. So...I am trying to send them to you in the mail. If you could give me some kind of address I would really appreciate it. I live down in Fouke, Arkansas...Love your channel.
I don’t have a PO Box set up currently and I don’t put my address out for obvious reasons. I appreciate the offer though, very much. I need to get out your way for the Fouke Monster Festival some time. That would be great content right there!

YT Premium.-- I don't get the ads. Worth every penny.
That works too
I'm new to your channel, and I have only seen two of your videos thus far, but I was looking at the limited list of items in the Get Home Bag for Joey and saw you'd picked Readywise for his food source... 💩
I understand it's meant to be a budget worthy purchase, but I would suggest that you find a different source that doesn't have soy... I can research additional sources of food that don't contain soy, if you want, just wanted it to be said, in case anyone else has Readywise in there preps or bags...
Cheers from Scotland!

For some reason I can’t purchase the paracord. It keeps putting it in my cart with my shipping address 🤷♂️
Maybe I need to choose a different product. I’ll look into it.
👍👏🏻❤️👍

Hey, has anyone yet sent the book : "How to Run Faster Than Your Friend In a Bear Incident" ?
Yep. It’s next to a copy of “How to Stab Your Buddy in the Leg for Survival “
Hopefully he has use for the Esbit. I am cheap....
That arrived after the filming but it is very much appreciated.
@@dadbudgetadventures the Festival is April 25 and 26th 2025. I have a booth there....come on down, we would love to see you there.
I’m gonna try to make it happen this year. Been wanting to go for a while so maybe this time it will work out. It’s a bit of a drive but should be worth it.
I'm so glad I can still send something. I thought I had missed the 🛥!
Not at all. We are still building.
@dadbudgetadventures I want to send something that's not on the list, how do I do that?
