  • The Miraculous Benefits of the Lăng Nghiêm Mantra
The Lăng Nghiêm Mantra holds a significant place in Buddhism and is often recited during the early morning practice. This mantra is believed to possess extraordinary power and efficacy, helping practitioners to eliminate demonic disturbances, stabilize their meditation, dispel ignorance, and achieve wisdom and merit.
The Lăng Nghiêm Mantra is wondrous and beyond conceptual understanding. From beginning to end, each phrase is a profound teaching of the Buddhas, with each line and each word carrying deep, esoteric significance. The mantra has unparalleled spiritual power. Reciting even a single phrase, word, or complete mantra can cause dramatic transformations, making the heavens tremble, causing demons to weep, and driving away malevolent beings. The radiant light on the Buddha's crown symbolizes the power of the Lăng Nghiêm Mantra, representing its ability to dispel all darkness and help practitioners achieve all virtues.
Those who diligently recite the Lăng Nghiêm Mantra are believed to eventually become Buddhas, attaining the supreme, perfect enlightenment. Regular recitation can eradicate karmic obstacles accumulated over countless lifetimes. This is the miraculous effect of the Lăng Nghiêm Mantra.
The origin of the mantra's significance is linked to the story of the maiden Mādhavī who used dark magic to cause the Venerable Ānanda to lose self-control, nearly jeopardizing his precepts. Thanks to the Buddha’s expedient means, the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī was instructed to teach the mantra to help Ānanda escape the danger posed by the female demon (as described in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra). Subsequently, the Buddha enlightened Ānanda about the true nature of his mind, clearing away delusions and impurities, and leading him to enlightenment.
