Yes, even some of the most benevolent star wars hardcore fans couldn't put up with some of the stuff from this movie. Some like it, saying it's better than the last Jedi haha... But considering how divisive that one was, it isn't high praise
You know where they released the Palpatine transmission? Not in the trailer, not before the opening scrawl. They played in on Fortnite. No announcement, they just interrupted every game being played, darkened the sky and played the transmission. And no where else.

So, during the crawl, they were supposed to explain the whole process? Somehow, Palpatine shoots lightning from his fingers! Somehow, Vader can Force choke someone through Bluetooth! Somehow, Yoda can easily lift a whole X-wing out of a swamp by waving his hand around! It's called WILLING suspension of disbelief. You have to play along for the story to work. You are in another time, another place. This is how stuff works in that galaxy far, far away.
55:28 Palpatine originally ensnared Anakin by describing how the Sith Lord, Darth Plagueis, had the ability to keep people from dying - it's clearly very rare, but already established. The old expanded universe also had examples of characters demonstrating the ability (such as Anakin's descendant, Cade Skywalker, who initially spontaneously manifested the power as a young padawan to save his master), but it was typically shown to be a Dark Side power that required the user to bend the Force to their will rather than work naturally alongside it.
Before the prequels, the lack of Star Wars content sparked fans to create RPG’s of the Star Wars universe. Massive storylines and new content for fans to continue the story were created. That included the cloners of Camino that Palpatine used to create the clone army to also create clones of himself. Also, the healing powers were mentioned by Palpatine in episode 3. Darth Plagas The Wise, Palpatine’s mentor, who had the power to prevent people from dying as well as use the Midiclorians to create life. The reason for Anikin’s fall and Ben’s redemption, preventing death.. Rey’s in this case. A lot of people miss that fact when they complain about the sequels. Lastly, the underlying theme throughout is are we destined to have our families’ fate by acting like them? The path to the dark side is defeating the enemy like they live.. with hate. Rey avoided that by reflecting Palpatine ‘s hate back at him, essentially destroying himself with his own hate. Love the Reactions Emme!
It's hinted that Palpatine basically just made it up. Also, Plagueis didn't have that power in a vacuum. He was working on both powers you mentioned through years and years of research. Rey just spontaneously has these powers. This power is also seen as a negative, unnatural, dark side thing, whereas Rey's use of it is never portrayed badly. The closest thing to that power is the Jedi healing trance, which heals against many severe wounds. HOWEVER, it will not heal everything. If you get stabbed through the chest, you're dead. No healing power will undo that in two seconds
I could’ve gone without Palpatine. One of the things I loved about The Last Jedi was it left us with the idea that Rey was a nobody. There are definitely cool moments and ideas in this movie but JJ needs to stay away from Star Wars. There’s something fundamental to Star Wars that he misses. I did appreciate the C-3PO love.
Oh my! I watched this video yesterday and I am still laughing at "Maybe she just needed CPR...?" That was hilarious to me!! I do think, though, that you reacted to that with your initial expression the same way everyone in the theater did. That kiss came out of nowhere and surprised all of us. One thing you did not mention... in the episode 8, Finn and Rose were "a thing" in that it seemed like they were setting them up for a romantic payoff. Then... nothing from them! That plotline, if it was one to begin with, was seemingly forgotten. I think, in addition to other points that other folks are making in the comments, it didn't feel like it was connected to the rest of the series. Yes, we find out who Rey is, but should it have been that? And she denies her heritage in the end anyway, for obvious reasons! So it is as if that revelation was meaningless!! Unless she becomes a villain.... Plus, we never really get to meet her parents!! We see her mom and dad briefly, I think, but that's it! So we never really get to find out about Rey's parents until the end, and even then it is just that Rey is the grand daughter of palpatine, but which parent is Palpatine's? So many other things... like walking and running and even riding horses on a space ship while it is in atmosphere. I don't know how green the pilots are, but I am pretty sure their space(!!) ships have artificial gravity and would have no problem flipping over to dump all the horses, etc. that are blowing them up on to the surface of the planet!! Ok... l am starting again and I need to not... But fun reactions, and wonderful and funny commentary throughout!
I was onboard after the first two films. For me, TROS puts into sharp relief the biggest issue of the sequel "trilogy" - there was apparently no overarching story planned. I don't fault the creatives (directors, actors, writers, etc.) as much as I do the oversight of Lucasfilm (or rather lack thereof) for what we ended up with. One can only hope they've learned from their mistakes. With that said, I for one am looking forward to a new Rey movie and hope to see some redemption for the character and any others willing to come back.
George Lucas left them with a three picture outline, and they tossed it! Good on them. After all, what does he know about Star Wars? I'm not saying they were wrong to make some changes. For example, I'm glad they aged up Rey/Kira from a child. But seriously, the new trilogy couldn't have felt anymore like they were making it up as they went along.
@@mperezmcfinn2511 They did not age Rey/Kira up from a child. She was the same age as she was in the outlines. The child thing is a myth. There's even a joke I've heard making fun of the rumor. "So Lucasfilm aged the main characters up from being children in their twenties to being adults in their twenties" 😂

Because I legitimately felt hypocritical for supporting the decision to age Rey up while simultaneously believing the other changes were disrespectful to the original outline. Honestly, I don't have a problem with minor changes like planet swapping or whatever. As long as the original story remains intact.
Force and healing- you can't use the Force all the time, need to rest and regain strength like any type of energy output. ( I think you know what I mean- Rey rubbing her hand after healing the snake thingy, probably made her hand weak.) Ben used all his Force ability to heal Rey (essentially bring her back from death). He did what the Emperor was trying to do (cheat death) kind of, but more like a sacrifice. (Maybe that's the secret, You can cheat death by sacrificing another?). Summary: Can't Force jump/ use the Force all the time, you get tired, ( Yoda only used it when he had to, like against Dooku).

The sequels fail for two main reasons. 1: Return of the Jedi was the perfect ending for episodes 1-6 and the sequels basically throw all of that out; Anakin/Vader's redemption and sacrifice; Luke Leia and Han saving the galaxy from the Empire; etc. 2: It is obvious (and they have admitted as much) that they made no thought whatsoever in planning these three sequel movies out. Nothing really makes sense from movie to movie and in the end; what are these three movies trying to say as a story? Really; there is no message here at all. For these to reasons the sequels are wiped from my head canon and I try to pretend they never happened. Thanks for the reviews Emme.
right, and many inconsistencies with Lucas original timeline: Lucas himself in an interview reminded us that there were only 2 siths at a given time (master & apprentice), both were destroyed in ROTJ, so there were no more dark force users to train Snoke. And many others that I won't get into (could write a whole book). Disney brought back popular characters for the sole reason of milking more $$$ from SW fans, but it doesn't tie with episodes 1 to 6. Sequels are not so bad movies, but I consider them as good action movies, but nothing to do with Star Wars.
Hear me out, but I think The Last Jedi had the most potential to do the trilogy good out of all the sequels. I liked the direction it was going before they desperately backpedaled with Rise of Skywalker. The "anyone can be a Jedi" thing was such a tease for the final film, then RoS comes out and makes Rey related to Palpatine. Why do all the Jedi have to be connected somehow? Look at who Yoda was or Mace Windu... my biggest problem with RoS is how small it makes the galaxy look.
Nah, Vader's redemption still works because he saved his son. It wasn't about killing, but saving. If anything, it was the prequels which destroyed his character arc by having Anakin do horrible things beyond redemption. You can't X children and be redeemed from that in one simple act. The Vader of the original trilogy was never made out to be that psychotic as portrayed in the prequels.
I honestly never thought Disney could possibly make a worse movie than Last Jedi. And as a 54 year old that saw Episode 4 in the movies when he was 7 I can honestly say, your after movie reaction was as the British say, Spot On. Everything that bothered you was 153% absolutely Spot On.
The problem with this episode was Palpatine without any lead-up. And the fact that dead is never dead in Star Wars anymore. There was satisfaction when Vader dropped him to his death and he exploded in his evil. But with Mando and Ahsoka series and what happens leading up to the sequels it's believable that they can make sense of it with the cloning or night sister magic that he was brought back. However, that will never excuse the bad exposition in the beginning where Poe just tells us what needs to be suggested in movies 7 and 8. Giving us hints that this might be coming. But none of that happened because no one planned this. No one sat down and said for the next trilogy this happens, then this, and finally this. It was just winging it whatever way you want to, and that's always going to make them feel weak no matter how much the stuff in the middle does to help.
Seriously, all of the Disney changes where they keep bringing lost Jedi back after Order 66 basically makes the Jedi Purge meaningless, since so many apparently fucking survived it somehow. It cheapens storytelling when you make arbitrary decisions that don't make sense in the broader context of the narrative.
@@lordmortarius538many Jedi in Legends also survived Order 66, and Lucas in one of his sequel trilogy concepts also had a bunch of Order 66 survivors. I don't think it cheapens the impact, even having 100 survivors means that 99,9% have been wiped out.

But when we see you die onscreen you should be dead. Maul cut in half yet back in clone wars I accepted. Palatine blowing up in a magnetic field of evil should be dead, well unless he cloned himself 🫤. Please don’t make Mace Windu comeback. NO. Force ghosts are okay but no more not deads.
I feel like the Dyad should've been introduced way sooner & explored more. Throwing it in the last film just felt like an excuse to have a 'reveal'. We have seen Dyads before in Star Wars lore but they're extremely rare

You're absolutely correct. Palpatine returning out of nowhere, the kiss, and Han being a force ghost even though he wasn't a Jedi (probably the only thing that wasn't their fault since Carrie Fisher passed before filming this one) are some of the main criticisms to this movie. Even Mark Hamill, when doing interviews you could see he was trying to be supportive, but he could not stand the storyline of these movies.
All The Leia scenes is just deleted footage from the Force Awakens. That they used to work around with. That’s why during her death scene you don’t see her face because it’s a double

Everything else is non-fan-made licensed fluff of variable quality. So, I just don’t care about this trilogy since I can just ignore it like it never happened…
Agreed. Dave Filoni was basically Lucas' protege, and Disney snubbed him in favor of Kathleen "ruin everything" Kennedy. Anything by anyone other than Dave or George is NOT Star Wars, it's fan fiction trash.
What you need to know about the sequel trilogy is that I think Disney REALLY wanted remakes, but I suspect that there may have been a clause in the contract when Lucas sold to Disney, something like "no remakes until I'm dead", or something like that. That's my theory for the sequels being cheap copies of the originals. Not only that, but there was no clear story outline for the trilogy as a whole. You had directors competing to outdo each other with no real investment in the overall story, and that's my theory as to why the prequels are such a mess. Love your videos. Keep 'em coming! \m/
This movie made no sense, like it literally just made no sense. Almost every decision felt rushed, every line felt cringe, it took away from everything that came before. Everyone thinks Last Jedi was the worst, but at least there was effort. This movie straight out had no effort and was garbage.
One thing i liked is that the idea of Rey being a palpitine is awesome to me but im upset she didnt own that name proudly. There was a serious oppertunity to show kids that you dont need to let your name and who you are on the outside define who you are but you can take it and make it your own and go down a different path. that is one of the many things that bothered me that not as many people really talk about or it being a common opinion.
I feel like Palpatine's return was a kick in the groin to Anakin's whole sacrifice. The idea of a Sith Cult is a good one, like the concept of Starkiller Base, in my opinion. The way this could have worked was after the death of Snoke, Emo-boy Kylo becomes Supreme Leader for a while and the Sith Eternal reveal themselves to the First Order leadership. Naturally,after confirming the Cult is a genuine organization and not Resistence popycock, they supress this new knowledge: not wanting to look like utter morons and become the laughing stock of the galaxy. Even going as far as mind-erasing the Stormtroopers who witnessed the holo-transmission in the High Command conference room. Then Ren and his boy-band of mysterious misfits find and travel to Exegol via Sith Wayfinder and their leader offers the Sith Eternal Fleet built on Sidious's orders. The rest goes more or less the same: Rey is a Palpatine, Sidious wants to take form via possession of Rey being relegated to being an anoying Force Ghost all these years. Kylo does not however redeem himself dying tragicly still a Fallen Jedi. What do you think?

I also feel that, to change things up a bit, Rey should have been partly possessed by Sidious offering another challenge for Her to demonstrate to the audience her uniqueness in the Force: to be able to assert her own identity as an individual and to not let her lineage dictate her Destiny. It could also potentially set up a plot point fo the future.

I have heard that the original concept they were working towards in Rey's origins were quite different... Originally, she was going to be of the line of... KENOBI.... Most likely would have made Rey a Mandalorian too... And niece of Bo Katan (More likely a grand niece, otherwise, she would be older then Luke and Leia)... Nice tie in with future "Star Wars" projects... Wouldn't surprise me if the find a way to change it back to her being a Kenobi... All they would have to do is say is that Palpatine lied to Kylo Ren, who, in turn, passed it on to Rey... And us viewers... Also, another possability... Who can say old Obi Wan didn't find a girlfriend in his exile on Tattooine....

They never really dropped that idea, but rather, just never used it... Plus, If memory serves, I believe that Obi Wan mentioned having a younger brother in "Kenobi"... Maybe Owen was a half brother... Could explain the different family names... While Owen and Beru may not have been blood relation to the Skywalkers, Anakin's mother and Owen's father were married... Which would make Schmi Skywalker Obi Wan's step mother, making Obi Wan and Anakin step brothers, should Disney choose to make that idea officially canon... Disney is known for family content, after all...
I wonder what could have been if they had some level of foresight to have Leia do the Holdo Maneuver and keep Luke alive for this movie. I think it would have been cool to have Luke go head to head (maybe with some help from Rey and Ben) against the Emperor considering all he did was get wrecked by him in RotJ until Vader threw Palpy in a big pit
The scene I love so much in this film is when Rey hears the voices of the Jedi of old. She hears: Anakin Skywalker Obi Wan Kenobi Ahsoka Tano Yoda Qui Gon Jinn Mace Windu Luke Skywalker Kanan Jarrus Luminara Unduil Aayla Secura & Adi Gallia It was incredible to hear cast members not just from the prequels but also from The Clone Wars and Rebels. It truly felt like a special way of connecting the film and television projects together. The only two things I wish that would have been if the Jedi appeared as ghosts, shielding and supporting Rey. But also, I wish Leia was among them and said “Always” at the end.
Yes. I was bothered in similar ways. By the time episode 9 came out, I was done with the franchise (too many years of really bad writing). I only watched it out of mild curiosity to see how they would finish the saga. And I wasn't disappointed... it was as bad as I expected it to be. I wish I could feel like I did about Star Wars back in the 80s and 90s. Before the dark times. Before the empire.

I don't mind Palpatine being back, because it makes the sequel trilogy feel more like parts 7, 8, and 9 of a 9 part story rather than a three part sequel to a six part story. But if he's going to be back, I think he needs to be introduced at the end of the previous film rather than the opening crawl of this one. The novelisation of this film and other books comics have helped to establish Palpatine’s return. Firstly, the Palpatine we see here is a CLONE. When he fell into the Death Star in Return of the Jedi, Palpatine’s spirit (by some miracle) lived on and made its way to Exegol where it managed to latch onto a prototype clone body. However, the body was unstable, resulting in his appearance when we first see him at the beginning. Palpatine’s son (Rey’s father) is also a clone. An experiment by Palpatine to see if any of his clones could harness the same level of power in the force that he already possessed. He did not, and eventually fled into the galaxy trying to settle down and live a quiet life. It’s possible that The Bad Batch series has been slowly planting the seeds of Palpatine’s clones and thus subsequent return in The Rise of Skywalker. Perhaps that is what Doctor Hemlock has been working on.
I still can't believe Carrie fisher died when 8 was released she was a icon and she only was reduced to b roll. But I actually feel bad for the entire star was cast on this one. Carrie fishers death caused a major rewrite and replanning this was supposed to be a mostly Leila film.
Star Wars is about Anakin, so 1-6 and clone wars, everything else is disney fan fiction, if I owned the license I would have made vader pink, but it would still just be fan fiction, even if I owned the license
"I wanna see Anakin" is my overall feeling about the sequel trilogy. Anakin's force ghost would've been so much more powerful to see than Yoda with Luke or make way more sense than Han with Ben. Not as much sense with Rey but I would take it! Not only would it make more sense in the story by seeing Luke with his father that he saved or Ben with his grandfather that he idolized for all the wrong reasons but it would've made the only connection between the sequel trilogy and the prequel trilogy.
If there's one thing that I can really say positive about this movie. It is that they look, along with the rest of the sequel trilogy, very nice visually.
This was the movie that a lot of us long-time Star Wars fans "gave up" on Disney's Star Wars. They had so many ways they could've taken Rey's story and made it interesting and incredible - but they made the decision to turn her into a literal Mary Sue. She invalidates all the accomplishments of all the other Jedi who came before, makes the established canon characters before her look like children with how easily she triumphed. They brought back a literal dead character just so she could be the new "highest power Jedi" in the lore. It all felt like just such a waste and many of us who have been fans since we were children felt like we were tossed out because Disney wanted to capture the newer, younger audience who don't have the patience or respect to go back and see the originals and understand why they were good. Everyone involved at Disney's handling of this IP is responsible for this. They don't care because they made their billions, but they did it by killing one of the most beloved franchises in movie history.
Big Star Wars fan. To date this is the only Star Wars movie I've never felt the need to re-watch. It felt so disappointing. It really cemented how they had no idea of the story they wanted to tell as a trilogy. Each movie throws away elements from the prior films. The biggest change is Rey going from a nobody, to a Palpatine, to a "Skywalker"? She's not a Skywalker. This movie just annoys me the most of any of them.
In the books Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter, after shunning his son after not showing force sensitivity, he flees and after years in the run left Rey with all intent on returning.
im not a radicalist like many, and i consider everything canon, sequels spinoffs and all, that is, EXCEPT rise of skywalker and i honestly consider another version of episode IX my own canon in its place, which is the "episode IX Duel of the Fates motion comic" on youtube which combines the Trevorrow script, a comic made by a guy, and voice acting and sfx work organised by the poster
pleasant watch if someone wants to cleanse their perception of the sequels mind you, there are some things i would change about it, which are for example 1 guy having the darksaber (i just switch it to a beskar sword) and rey using lightning (i just switch it to force choke - still dark of her!!) and i think some other situational pacing stuff but i dont remember now
myriads of angels come down to save the oh wait a minute no no no no no no no no no thousand of 1000s of starships come down from the Heavens too save the day ,,, I love that part at the end where all the spaceships come in to save the day
I remember the trailer for _The Rise of Skywalker_ was one of the most epic and amazing trailers Disney Lucasfilm ever made. Too bad the movie didn't really live up to the trailer in my opinion. Feel bad for Finn/John Boyega. It would have been awesome if they could have made use of his emerging force sensibilities instead of putting the entire franchise on Rey's shoulders.
It isn’t explicitly explained in the Sequel Trilogy, but the reason why no one used the power of Force Healing is because it was a Jedi power that had been lost over time due to the arrogance of the Jedi Order. Rey learned about it from the books she took from the first Jedi Temple in EP8. Because that power was not taught at the Jedi Temple all the Jedi we’ve seen before in previous movies did not learn that skill and that’s why Obi-Wan didn’t heal Qui-Gon and Luke didn’t heal Vader- they didn’t know how because they had never learned from the Ancient Jedi Texts.
I watched this "properly" for the first time a couple of days ago. And honestly? I don't mind it. I still think ep I is by far the weakest and new trilogy is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. But I enjoyed all 9 "main" movies.
I let myself be swept up by the fast pacing and all the action the first time, and didnt feel that much was off until the end. THEN i watched it a second boy and huh boy every issue everyone else mentioned appeared to me lol

Ben fulfilled Anakin's quest, to save the ones he loved from dying. As for the return of the Emperor, look at it from the view of our history, after all the sacrifice made in what was known ae The Great War (World War 1), evil returned and we had a second World War.
Anakin's quest should have been sealed in Ep 6 and the second world war, while partly caused by the resolution of WW1 was not a rehashing. WW1 dealt with nationalism, WW2 delt with fascism.
I will admit, I have not watched the reaction yet, as I'm trying to catch up with your journey (which is difficult because I can't bring myself to watch Book of Boba Fett). But I cannot NOT comment on this one... There are two enjoyable moments in this movie for me: Kylo/Ben meeting his father again, and the voices of "all the jedi". That's about it, one of the most uninspired yet terrible movies I've seen (tbf I don't watch that many movies :P). My biggest annoyance: Why bring Palpatine back? It ruins so many things, I remember watching this in the cinema with my best friend and we could not take the movie seriously after his first appearance. Why didn't they stick with Kylo as the main villain? Adam Driver's performance, especially in TLJ, was incredible, he would have made a great antagonist, now truly gone to the dark side (with a slight chance at redemption?). Carrie Fishers death was tragic and made such a storyline more difficult, but still: Backpeddling all the character development we got in TLJ to instead make a superficial action flick is incomprehensible to me. In case anyone actually reads this, let me invite you to think about "themes": Going from Kylo's theme of "Let the past die" to then serving the literal revived past here in TROS, shows a basic misunderstanding of any deeper concepts. Rey being a nobody was a unique idea, juxtaposing the failed hero Ben (and to a lesser degree, Luke), who had all expections thrown on him and broke under that pressure, with the future, someone (who could have been anyone really) empowered by the force to replace the hero of the past. Her attempt at finding out her heritage only to be disappointed almost seemed directed at the viewer: The force is not merely about blood, but about will. The will of the force, and the will of the person being chosen by it. Yes, family was a major element of the older six movies, yet the victory Luke won was not due to his inborn power (that what was the Dark Side desired from him), but his compassion for his father and the love it invoked in the latter. Rey's (maybe naive) compassion for Kylo mirrored that. As cheesy as it is, one of the major themes of Star Wars is that love, mercy and compassion winning out in the end. Like the myths and fairytales Lucas talked about. (It's almost as if when Luke threw away his lightsaber and refused to strike down his father, he was trying to "save what he loved instead of destroying what he hated" :p) This is just a very basic look at the themes in TLJ, failure and how we deal with it being another big one, but I don't want to write that much more. Just compare what I just wrote with TROS: What are its themes? What is the message? I can't find any consistent one, it pulls into all directions at the same time, but commits to nothing. "If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?" It's a fascinating failure, yet I cannot find myself to care for almost anything actually within the movie. And to quote something actually from Star Wars: "Apathy is death."
I don't know if you noticed a common line that was recited in all the trilogy movies. "I've got a bad feeling about this." It's such a well known line that some reactors will spot it when it is uttered. I guess this time, it was Lando's turn.
These last 3 are fun if you don't think about them too much. But I am disappointed that the Disney versions are more geared towards kids and young adults and, for me at least, have lost that timeless mystic element that they had originally. Instead, the empowering principle is friendship and working together. That's the sort of thing that gets the kids to school and the adults to their jobs on time, not change the course of history or result in profound personal growth.
Force heal was always a thing Mostly in the but some say. Kenobi Always did it like when he put his hand On patama's cheek or in the fourth movie win. Hey, grabbed ahold of Luke when he was passed out when they first met And also in the books palpating comes back like 4 or 5 times they're all clone bodies and he transfers his essence to them But yes, I agree. It wasn't that great of a movie.
I think they should have taken the clean slate provided by end of TLJ and make something unique, rather than the rehash of characters/conflicts. But I think it was doomed due to RJ trying to escape from constraints of OT worship, and Disney scared to explore off-beat stuff that may not be as fan(nostalgia)-pleasing. I'm no expert , but I have been a fan of Star Wars since my older sister took me into town to see the first movie back in the day ( I'm 60 now ) , I think this movie was terrible, I totally agree that the old Emperor had no business being in this story , why not Plagus if your going to go down that road , I'm sure he could've imitated all the voices in that dimwit kylos head including Sidious's . And he could've had a whole new world built around his character. But it's to late now I spose' . I was around when Walt Disney was still alive , at least I think I was , and even he would be spinning in his fridge over that rubbish.
I know you watched the clone wars essential episodes but I think you should watch the whole thing cause the writing for the show was genius it was the best show for star wars and its a shame to miss out
Carrie Fisher died in real life between 8 and 9, so she was unable to film anything new for this, so it was kind of necessary for them write her out of the franchise
In all honesty, me and my dad weren't even watching this movie. We were busy trying to wrap our heads around how "somehow, Palpatine returned". We were so confused with each other.

Speaking of you being upset when you thought Chewie was dead: It’s no longer canon anymore, but back in the day, there was an author named, R.A. Salvatore, that wrote a book called, ‘Vector Prime’, and it received quite a bit of hate from fans, because Chewbacca died sacrificing himself while saving Han and Leia’s youngest son.
Honestly, while I was initially not a fan of it, I think it did a lot of good in the long run. Han and Leia were able to bond in a way they hadn’t before thereafter

The saddest part about this? R2 being there to see Padme giving birth to Leia, and many years later, R2 being there seeing Leia’s passing.
You know where they released the Palpatine transmission? Not in the trailer, not before the opening scrawl. They played in on Fortnite. No announcement, they just interrupted every game being played, darkened the sky and played the transmission. And no where else.
There was a HUGE annoucement. People were in the game soley for that moment. It was also a specific mode...they didn't interrupt ANY game.
Wasn't even until a few years later that I found out there was a "transmission" anywhere... it was just a line in the movie

The old expanded universe also had examples of characters demonstrating the ability (such as Anakin's descendant, Cade Skywalker, who initially spontaneously manifested the power as a young padawan to save his master), but it was typically shown to be a Dark Side power that required the user to bend the Force to their will rather than work naturally alongside it.

Before the prequels, the lack of Star Wars content sparked fans to create RPG’s of the Star Wars universe. Massive storylines and new content for fans to continue the story were created. That included the cloners of Camino that Palpatine used to create the clone army to also create clones of himself.
Also, the healing powers were mentioned by Palpatine in episode 3. Darth Plagas The Wise, Palpatine’s mentor, who had the power to prevent people from dying as well as use the Midiclorians to create life. The reason for Anikin’s fall and Ben’s redemption, preventing death.. Rey’s in this case. A lot of people miss that fact when they complain about the sequels.
Lastly, the underlying theme throughout is are we destined to have our families’ fate by acting like them? The path to the dark side is defeating the enemy like they live.. with hate. Rey avoided that by reflecting Palpatine ‘s hate back at him, essentially destroying himself with his own hate.

It's hinted that Palpatine basically just made it up. Also, Plagueis didn't have that power in a vacuum. He was working on both powers you mentioned through years and years of research. Rey just spontaneously has these powers. This power is also seen as a negative, unnatural, dark side thing, whereas Rey's use of it is never portrayed badly. The closest thing to that power is the Jedi healing trance, which heals against many severe wounds. HOWEVER, it will not heal everything. If you get stabbed through the chest, you're dead. No healing power will undo that in two seconds
I could’ve gone without Palpatine. One of the things I loved about The Last Jedi was it left us with the idea that Rey was a nobody. There are definitely cool moments and ideas in this movie but JJ needs to stay away from Star Wars. There’s something fundamental to Star Wars that he misses. I did appreciate the C-3PO love.
Oh my! I watched this video yesterday and I am still laughing at "Maybe she just needed CPR...?" That was hilarious to me!! I do think, though, that you reacted to that with your initial expression the same way everyone in the theater did. That kiss came out of nowhere and surprised all of us. One thing you did not mention... in the episode 8, Finn and Rose were "a thing" in that it seemed like they were setting them up for a romantic payoff. Then... nothing from them! That plotline, if it was one to begin with, was seemingly forgotten. I think, in addition to other points that other folks are making in the comments, it didn't feel like it was connected to the rest of the series. Yes, we find out who Rey is, but should it have been that? And she denies her heritage in the end anyway, for obvious reasons! So it is as if that revelation was meaningless!! Unless she becomes a villain.... Plus, we never really get to meet her parents!! We see her mom and dad briefly, I think, but that's it! So we never really get to find out about Rey's parents until the end, and even then it is just that Rey is the grand daughter of palpatine, but which parent is Palpatine's? So many other things... like walking and running and even riding horses on a space ship while it is in atmosphere. I don't know how green the pilots are, but I am pretty sure their space(!!) ships have artificial gravity and would have no problem flipping over to dump all the horses, etc. that are blowing them up on to the surface of the planet!! Ok... l am starting again and I need to not... But fun reactions, and wonderful and funny commentary throughout!
I was onboard after the first two films. For me, TROS puts into sharp relief the biggest issue of the sequel "trilogy" - there was apparently no overarching story planned. I don't fault the creatives (directors, actors, writers, etc.) as much as I do the oversight of Lucasfilm (or rather lack thereof) for what we ended up with. One can only hope they've learned from their mistakes.
With that said, I for one am looking forward to a new Rey movie and hope to see some redemption for the character and any others willing to come back.
George Lucas left them with a three picture outline, and they tossed it! Good on them. After all, what does he know about Star Wars? I'm not saying they were wrong to make some changes. For example, I'm glad they aged up Rey/Kira from a child. But seriously, the new trilogy couldn't have felt anymore like they were making it up as they went along.

"So Lucasfilm aged the main characters up from being children in their twenties to being adults in their twenties" 😂

Force and healing- you can't use the Force all the time, need to rest and regain strength like any type of energy output. ( I think you know what I mean- Rey rubbing her hand after healing the snake thingy, probably made her hand weak.) Ben used all his Force ability to heal Rey (essentially bring her back from death). He did what the Emperor was trying to do (cheat death) kind of, but more like a sacrifice. (Maybe that's the secret, You can cheat death by sacrificing another?).
Summary: Can't Force jump/ use the Force all the time, you get tired, ( Yoda only used it when he had to, like against Dooku).
this was a remarkable and unique journey you took us on...seeing these movies from your point of view was so interesting and refreshing...thank you for you 🤗🙏🏻

The sequels fail for two main reasons. 1: Return of the Jedi was the perfect ending for episodes 1-6 and the sequels basically throw all of that out; Anakin/Vader's redemption and sacrifice; Luke Leia and Han saving the galaxy from the Empire; etc. 2: It is obvious (and they have admitted as much) that they made no thought whatsoever in planning these three sequel movies out. Nothing really makes sense from movie to movie and in the end; what are these three movies trying to say as a story? Really; there is no message here at all. For these to reasons the sequels are wiped from my head canon and I try to pretend they never happened. Thanks for the reviews Emme.
right, and many inconsistencies with Lucas original timeline: Lucas himself in an interview reminded us that there were only 2 siths at a given time (master & apprentice), both were destroyed in ROTJ, so there were no more dark force users to train Snoke. And many others that I won't get into (could write a whole book). Disney brought back popular characters for the sole reason of milking more $$$ from SW fans, but it doesn't tie with episodes 1 to 6. Sequels are not so bad movies, but I consider them as good action movies, but nothing to do with Star Wars.
Hear me out, but I think The Last Jedi had the most potential to do the trilogy good out of all the sequels. I liked the direction it was going before they desperately backpedaled with Rise of Skywalker. The "anyone can be a Jedi" thing was such a tease for the final film, then RoS comes out and makes Rey related to Palpatine. Why do all the Jedi have to be connected somehow? Look at who Yoda was or Mace Windu... my biggest problem with RoS is how small it makes the galaxy look.

Nah, Vader's redemption still works because he saved his son. It wasn't about killing, but saving.
If anything, it was the prequels which destroyed his character arc by having Anakin do horrible things beyond redemption. You can't X children and be redeemed from that in one simple act. The Vader of the original trilogy was never made out to be that psychotic as portrayed in the prequels.

The problem with this episode was Palpatine without any lead-up. And the fact that dead is never dead in Star Wars anymore. There was satisfaction when Vader dropped him to his death and he exploded in his evil. But with Mando and Ahsoka series and what happens leading up to the sequels it's believable that they can make sense of it with the cloning or night sister magic that he was brought back. However, that will never excuse the bad exposition in the beginning where Poe just tells us what needs to be suggested in movies 7 and 8. Giving us hints that this might be coming. But none of that happened because no one planned this. No one sat down and said for the next trilogy this happens, then this, and finally this. It was just winging it whatever way you want to, and that's always going to make them feel weak no matter how much the stuff in the middle does to help.
Seriously, all of the Disney changes where they keep bringing lost Jedi back after Order 66 basically makes the Jedi Purge meaningless, since so many apparently fucking survived it somehow. It cheapens storytelling when you make arbitrary decisions that don't make sense in the broader context of the narrative.

I feel like the Dyad should've been introduced way sooner & explored more. Throwing it in the last film just felt like an excuse to have a 'reveal'. We have seen Dyads before in Star Wars lore but they're extremely rare

You're absolutely correct. Palpatine returning out of nowhere, the kiss, and Han being a force ghost even though he wasn't a Jedi (probably the only thing that wasn't their fault since Carrie Fisher passed before filming this one) are some of the main criticisms to this movie.
Even Mark Hamill, when doing interviews you could see he was trying to be supportive, but he could not stand the storyline of these movies.
All The Leia scenes is just deleted footage from the Force Awakens. That they used to work around with. That’s why during her death scene you don’t see her face because it’s a double

Agreed. Dave Filoni was basically Lucas' protege, and Disney snubbed him in favor of Kathleen "ruin everything" Kennedy. Anything by anyone other than Dave or George is NOT Star Wars, it's fan fiction trash.

What you need to know about the sequel trilogy is that I think Disney REALLY wanted remakes, but I suspect that there may have been a clause in the contract when Lucas sold to Disney, something like "no remakes until I'm dead", or something like that. That's my theory for the sequels being cheap copies of the originals. Not only that, but there was no clear story outline for the trilogy as a whole. You had directors competing to outdo each other with no real investment in the overall story, and that's my theory as to why the prequels are such a mess. Love your videos. Keep 'em coming! \m/
This movie made no sense, like it literally just made no sense. Almost every decision felt rushed, every line felt cringe, it took away from everything that came before. Everyone thinks Last Jedi was the worst, but at least there was effort. This movie straight out had no effort and was garbage.
One thing i liked is that the idea of Rey being a palpitine is awesome to me but im upset she didnt own that name proudly. There was a serious oppertunity to show kids that you dont need to let your name and who you are on the outside define who you are but you can take it and make it your own and go down a different path. that is one of the many things that bothered me that not as many people really talk about or it being a common opinion.

I feel like Palpatine's return was a kick in the groin to Anakin's whole sacrifice. The idea of a Sith Cult is a good one, like the concept of Starkiller Base, in my opinion. The way this could have worked was after the death of Snoke, Emo-boy Kylo becomes Supreme Leader for a while and the Sith Eternal reveal themselves to the First Order leadership. Naturally,after confirming the Cult is a genuine organization and not Resistence popycock, they supress this new knowledge: not wanting to look like utter morons and become the laughing stock of the galaxy.
Even going as far as mind-erasing the Stormtroopers who witnessed the holo-transmission in the High Command conference room.
Then Ren and his boy-band of mysterious misfits find and travel to Exegol via Sith Wayfinder and their leader offers the Sith Eternal Fleet built on Sidious's orders. The rest goes more or less the same: Rey is a Palpatine, Sidious wants to take form via possession of Rey being relegated to being an anoying Force Ghost all these years. Kylo does not however redeem himself dying tragicly still a Fallen Jedi. What do you think?
Thanks! I also feel that, to change things up a bit, Rey should have been partly possessed by Sidious offering another challenge for Her to demonstrate to the audience her uniqueness in the Force: to be able to assert her own identity as an individual and to not let her lineage dictate her Destiny.
It could also potentially set up a plot point fo the future.

Nice tie in with future "Star Wars" projects... Wouldn't surprise me if the find a way to change it back to her being a Kenobi... All they would have to do is say is that Palpatine lied to Kylo Ren, who, in turn, passed it on to Rey... And us viewers...
Also, another possability... Who can say old Obi Wan didn't find a girlfriend in his exile on Tattooine....

Maybe Owen was a half brother... Could explain the different family names...
While Owen and Beru may not have been blood relation to the Skywalkers, Anakin's mother and Owen's father were married... Which would make Schmi Skywalker Obi Wan's step mother, making Obi Wan and Anakin step brothers, should Disney choose to make that idea officially canon... Disney is known for family content, after all...

It was incredible to hear cast members not just from the prequels but also from The Clone Wars and Rebels. It truly felt like a special way of connecting the film and television projects together.
The only two things I wish that would have been if the Jedi appeared as ghosts, shielding and supporting Rey. But also, I wish Leia was among them and said “Always” at the end.
Somehow palpetine returned, the most appropriate line to show how little they cared about and thought about the production of this movie

Yes. I was bothered in similar ways. By the time episode 9 came out, I was done with the franchise (too many years of really bad writing). I only watched it out of mild curiosity to see how they would finish the saga. And I wasn't disappointed... it was as bad as I expected it to be.

I don't mind Palpatine being back, because it makes the sequel trilogy feel more like parts 7, 8, and 9 of a 9 part story rather than a three part sequel to a six part story. But if he's going to be back, I think he needs to be introduced at the end of the previous film rather than the opening crawl of this one. The novelisation of this film and other books comics have helped to establish Palpatine’s return. Firstly, the Palpatine we see here is a CLONE. When he fell into the Death Star in Return of the Jedi, Palpatine’s spirit (by some miracle) lived on and made its way to Exegol where it managed to latch onto a prototype clone body. However, the body was unstable, resulting in his appearance when we first see him at the beginning. Palpatine’s son (Rey’s father) is also a clone. An experiment by Palpatine to see if any of his clones could harness the same level of power in the force that he already possessed. He did not, and eventually fled into the galaxy trying to settle down and live a quiet life.
It’s possible that The Bad Batch series has been slowly planting the seeds of Palpatine’s clones and thus subsequent return in The Rise of Skywalker. Perhaps that is what Doctor Hemlock has been working on.
I still can't believe Carrie fisher died when 8 was released she was a icon and she only was reduced to b roll. But I actually feel bad for the entire star was cast on this one. Carrie fishers death caused a major rewrite and replanning this was supposed to be a mostly Leila film.
Star Wars is about Anakin, so 1-6 and clone wars, everything else is disney fan fiction, if I owned the license I would have made vader pink, but it would still just be fan fiction, even if I owned the license
"I wanna see Anakin" is my overall feeling about the sequel trilogy. Anakin's force ghost would've been so much more powerful to see than Yoda with Luke or make way more sense than Han with Ben. Not as much sense with Rey but I would take it! Not only would it make more sense in the story by seeing Luke with his father that he saved or Ben with his grandfather that he idolized for all the wrong reasons but it would've made the only connection between the sequel trilogy and the prequel trilogy.

If there's one thing that I can really say positive about this movie. It is that they look, along with the rest of the sequel trilogy, very nice visually.
What you say at the end is so true
This was the movie that a lot of us long-time Star Wars fans "gave up" on Disney's Star Wars. They had so many ways they could've taken Rey's story and made it interesting and incredible - but they made the decision to turn her into a literal Mary Sue. She invalidates all the accomplishments of all the other Jedi who came before, makes the established canon characters before her look like children with how easily she triumphed. They brought back a literal dead character just so she could be the new "highest power Jedi" in the lore.
It all felt like just such a waste and many of us who have been fans since we were children felt like we were tossed out because Disney wanted to capture the newer, younger audience who don't have the patience or respect to go back and see the originals and understand why they were good.
Everyone involved at Disney's handling of this IP is responsible for this. They don't care because they made their billions, but they did it by killing one of the most beloved franchises in movie history.

Big Star Wars fan. To date this is the only Star Wars movie I've never felt the need to re-watch. It felt so disappointing. It really cemented how they had no idea of the story they wanted to tell as a trilogy. Each movie throws away elements from the prior films. The biggest change is Rey going from a nobody, to a Palpatine, to a "Skywalker"? She's not a Skywalker. This movie just annoys me the most of any of them.
In the books Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter, after shunning his son after not showing force sensitivity, he flees and after years in the run left Rey with all intent on returning.
im not a radicalist like many, and i consider everything canon, sequels spinoffs and all, that is, EXCEPT rise of skywalker
and i honestly consider another version of episode IX my own canon in its place, which is the "episode IX Duel of the Fates motion comic" on youtube which combines the Trevorrow script, a comic made by a guy, and voice acting and sfx work organised by the poster
pleasant watch if someone wants to cleanse their perception of the sequels
mind you, there are some things i would change about it, which are for example 1 guy having the darksaber (i just switch it to a beskar sword) and rey using lightning (i just switch it to force choke - still dark of her!!) and i think some other situational pacing stuff but i dont remember now

I remember the trailer for _The Rise of Skywalker_ was one of the most epic and amazing trailers Disney Lucasfilm ever made. Too bad the movie didn't really live up to the trailer in my opinion. Feel bad for Finn/John Boyega. It would have been awesome if they could have made use of his emerging force sensibilities instead of putting the entire franchise on Rey's shoulders.

It isn’t explicitly explained in the Sequel Trilogy, but the reason why no one used the power of Force Healing is because it was a Jedi power that had been lost over time due to the arrogance of the Jedi Order. Rey learned about it from the books she took from the first Jedi Temple in EP8. Because that power was not taught at the Jedi Temple all the Jedi we’ve seen before in previous movies did not learn that skill and that’s why Obi-Wan didn’t heal Qui-Gon and Luke didn’t heal Vader- they didn’t know how because they had never learned from the Ancient Jedi Texts.
That makes sense. Oh maybe the Sith destroyed or burnt any source material related to Force healing and kept some information to themselves.

I watched this "properly" for the first time a couple of days ago. And honestly? I don't mind it. I still think ep I is by far the weakest and new trilogy is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. But I enjoyed all 9 "main" movies.

Ben fulfilled Anakin's quest, to save the ones he loved from dying.
As for the return of the Emperor, look at it from the view of our history, after all the sacrifice made in what was known ae The Great War (World War 1), evil returned and we had a second World War.
Anakin's quest should have been sealed in Ep 6 and the second world war, while partly caused by the resolution of WW1 was not a rehashing. WW1 dealt with nationalism, WW2 delt with fascism.
I will admit, I have not watched the reaction yet, as I'm trying to catch up with your journey (which is difficult because I can't bring myself to watch Book of Boba Fett). But I cannot NOT comment on this one... There are two enjoyable moments in this movie for me: Kylo/Ben meeting his father again, and the voices of "all the jedi". That's about it, one of the most uninspired yet terrible movies I've seen (tbf I don't watch that many movies :P).
My biggest annoyance: Why bring Palpatine back? It ruins so many things, I remember watching this in the cinema with my best friend and we could not take the movie seriously after his first appearance. Why didn't they stick with Kylo as the main villain? Adam Driver's performance, especially in TLJ, was incredible, he would have made a great antagonist, now truly gone to the dark side (with a slight chance at redemption?). Carrie Fishers death was tragic and made such a storyline more difficult, but still: Backpeddling all the character development we got in TLJ to instead make a superficial action flick is incomprehensible to me.
In case anyone actually reads this, let me invite you to think about "themes": Going from Kylo's theme of "Let the past die" to then serving the literal revived past here in TROS, shows a basic misunderstanding of any deeper concepts. Rey being a nobody was a unique idea, juxtaposing the failed hero Ben (and to a lesser degree, Luke), who had all expections thrown on him and broke under that pressure, with the future, someone (who could have been anyone really) empowered by the force to replace the hero of the past. Her attempt at finding out her heritage only to be disappointed almost seemed directed at the viewer: The force is not merely about blood, but about will. The will of the force, and the will of the person being chosen by it. Yes, family was a major element of the older six movies, yet the victory Luke won was not due to his inborn power (that what was the Dark Side desired from him), but his compassion for his father and the love it invoked in the latter. Rey's (maybe naive) compassion for Kylo mirrored that. As cheesy as it is, one of the major themes of Star Wars is that love, mercy and compassion winning out in the end. Like the myths and fairytales Lucas talked about. (It's almost as if when Luke threw away his lightsaber and refused to strike down his father, he was trying to "save what he loved instead of destroying what he hated" :p)
This is just a very basic look at the themes in TLJ, failure and how we deal with it being another big one, but I don't want to write that much more. Just compare what I just wrote with TROS: What are its themes? What is the message? I can't find any consistent one, it pulls into all directions at the same time, but commits to nothing. "If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?" It's a fascinating failure, yet I cannot find myself to care for almost anything actually within the movie. And to quote something actually from Star Wars: "Apathy is death."

These last 3 are fun if you don't think about them too much. But I am disappointed that the Disney versions are more geared towards kids and young adults and, for me at least, have lost that timeless mystic element that they had originally. Instead, the empowering principle is friendship and working together. That's the sort of thing that gets the kids to school and the adults to their jobs on time, not change the course of history or result in profound personal growth.

I think they should have taken the clean slate provided by end of TLJ and make something unique, rather than the rehash of characters/conflicts. But I think it was doomed due to RJ trying to escape from constraints of OT worship, and Disney scared to explore off-beat stuff that may not be as fan(nostalgia)-pleasing. EP9 is the only SW movie I started to fall asleep in, and the realization thought of that shockedme
I'm no expert , but I have been a fan of Star Wars since my older sister took me into town to see the first movie back in the day ( I'm 60 now ) , I think this movie was terrible, I totally agree that the old Emperor had no business being in this story , why not Plagus if your going to go down that road , I'm sure he could've imitated all the voices in that dimwit kylos head including Sidious's . And he could've had a whole new world built around his character. But it's to late now I spose' . I was around when Walt Disney was still alive , at least I think I was , and even he would be spinning in his fridge over that rubbish.
I know you watched the clone wars essential episodes but I think you should watch the whole thing cause the writing for the show was genius it was the best show for star wars and its a shame to miss out

Salvatore, that wrote a book called, ‘Vector Prime’, and it received quite a bit of hate from fans, because Chewbacca died sacrificing himself while saving Han and Leia’s youngest son.
Honestly, while I was initially not a fan of it, I think it did a lot of good in the long run. Han and Leia were able to bond in a way they hadn’t before thereafter
