I purposefully ignored that one because it's the only one where its purpose serves purely as a boss theme. Since you play the boss as Sonic the lyrics don't really make any sense anymore

You're forgetting the Sonic version from Generations 3DS, where the lyrics can be heard a bit better and the instrumentalization is lighter.
