Imagine what it was like to ride this in 1912. Few chances to feel speed back then, maybe on a train, but it wouldn't dip and curve like this. It's considered tame today, but I bet back then it was exhilarating.
great observation. roller coasters were still new and the sensation of riding them was too. this was probably so thrilling back then.
lol this is easiest the scariest rollercoaster you will ever ride - no suspension, you can feel every bump and it feels like it might fall apart any second!

This ride had a cable lift, in 1912. Far ahead of its time.
you can't call yourself a true melbournian until you've ridden this ride, so much fun and really bumpy when you ride at the back but you can't stop laughing when you're on it ! :)

I'm a Melbourne boy and The Scenic Railway is a very historic coaster. It doesn't roll down hills it bounces down them and it's hilarious. It's not fast or scary but gives everyone the giggles. The sad thing is that I've not seen anyone mention The Big Dipper (1923-1989, demolished) It was based off the Coney Island "Cyclone" WITHOUT a single banked corner and the airtime was crazy. It was so dangerous it was demolished because everything vibrated so much you couldn't see and they decided it was too expensive to repair. It was rather vicious and you could feel it leaving the tracks. Then as it got to the last couple of bends the person sitting next to you would slam into you so hard from the G's is was nuts. There was no way they could have restored that one but my god it was awesome fun. Yes I'm showing my age. It was quite a bit higher than the scenic railway and had NO BRAKE MAN and the drops were very steep. That killed Luna Park in Melbourne and all the other old rides they destroyed along with the big dipper. If they maintained that place it would be like stepping back in time.
The Big Dipper wasn't demolished, it was moved to Dreamworld

The Big Dipper in Melbourne was another wooden roller coaster.
It got replaced with the name "The Coney Drop"
Oh no the Big Dipper in Melbourne and Sydney were apparently identical but I know the Melbourne one was definitely trashed
I've seen pictures of the Luna Park Big Dipper and it looked much more like a figure-eight style layout than anything closes to resembling the Cyclone. But for sure it ran along the side at 1:18, is there still an ornate building along that area, if so that was Big Dipper's station. according to RCDB it was torn down because it wasn't economical to refurbish it as opposed to taking it completely down. Sadly the same reason that the legendary Airplane Coaster was lost.
I live in the US and have never ridden this ride but I would love to move to Australia just to be the brakeman of this ride for the rest of my life.
The employees actually take shifts for every ride. They change every 30 minutes.

I went on this for an excursion, and it's now my favourite coaster of all time. Not because of the drops and tunnels, but the fact that it's over 100 years old and is composed of wood
This is a good coaster for an old guy like me. LOL. Plenty of time for my heart to slow down between dips.

This is such a fun ride. I mean it’s bumpy but that’s the fun of it. Plus on the first drop and the hill before the second tunnel you get pretty good airtime!
I first rode this ride when I was five years old and I was hysterical lol.
I love it now though. You are not Australian until you have been to Luna park and more so, rode on this ride!

The big dipper was not removed forever. It was relocated to Dreamworld where it operates today!
Mr agent circus was referring to the old wooden Big Dipper that Luna park Melbourne had from 1923-1989. It was demolished due to it being not practical to change the wood.
Leap the dips has no break man. It has a person at the station operating the breaks, but if that was called a break man then every roller coaster would have a break man
It’s a wooden roller coaster. Gravity. That’s pretty much the only thing sticking it to the track. That’s why a man operating the brakes is necessary. You don’t want it going too fast over a bump, or too fast around a corner.

The scenic rail is actually one of the oldest in the world, the only one made in that time period and it still works! It’s a really great ride, I loved it so much, I actually went on it twice in 1 day! It is really fun a definitely recommend it! Bye and have a good 2023❤️

I rode this in 1982 and the train still used a manual, driver operated brake lever on the last "chuck wagon" (making the ride different depending on the brakemans style of operation). This and the visible cracks, splits and sway is what scared me
AWESOME. Too bad there isn't anything like this in the states or is there? I honestly don't know. But it's pretty cool.
It's a great ride, when it's well maintained and operated properly.

It's true that Leap The Dips is the oldest coaster in the world, but it hasn't operated continually; it had a 14 year break between 1985 and 1999. The Scenic Railway hasn't stopped since 1912. Therefore, it's the oldest _continually_ operating wooden coaster in the world.
So they both hold records in their own categories!

Never Knew That :) anyways, I'm super exited because a few days ago marked the opening of the scenic railway at dreamland margate, its been shut for 9 years, neglected, burnt, but not forgotten, but a few days ago was the opening of the scenic railway as dreamland opened again as well!!

For the people that are going in this ride: it is not scary it is very fun even the fares wheel is scarier than this ride this roller coaster is more fun then scary. But the only bad thing about it is that it’s really bumpy but overall it’s so much fun! You even get your picture taken when your on it witch is very cool. I was really scared to go on it at first but when I went on it it was amazing and when I got off it became my new favourite ride so I really recommend you go on this ride.

Went on the railway last weekend. Been to 6 flags magic Mountain, knotsberry farm, Disneyland etc and as a local to Melbourne, I still find this one takes the cake. Followed up on 2nd is the one at California adventure park

Wow, I recently saw a POV of the now SBNO Dreamland, Margate Scenic Railway, which seemed to be very similar in design to this coaster, right down to the trains. Albeit this coaster has steeper hills. Sadly the Dreamland one suffered damage from a fire and there are concerns that it will never reopen. But it is nice to see this one is still running. Here in the US, none of these types of Scenic Railways are around anymore. Definitely a huge piece of history there. Cherish it well.

Theme Park Review should return to Australia soon. They haven't been on Green Lantern, Buzzsaw, Arkham Asylum, The Storm(Sea World's upcoming "Water Coaster") and Australia's first ever Eurocoaster(Adventure World in Perth is starting to spend big bucks!!! It's a clone of "Saw: The Ride"!!!)

Actually it was the oldest... because "Leap The Dips" in some american park(can't remember which) was SNBO for a long period of time, when this then became the oldest still operating. However Leap The Dips was restored and reopened. Scenic Railway is the oldest rollercoaster that has never closed for any significant length of time. It's the "oldest continually operating roller coaster".

Park opens only for school holiday season and can be booked for special events
TPR obviously booked it just to ride the coasters. It's usually very busy when open.

Actually it's common on this ride, but it depends on who the breaks man is. A good one will give you a fantastic ride with that bit of airtime, a bad one will kill it by breaking too often.

That is called a brakeman. They control the brakes. The rest of it operates on gravity, like most roller coasters do, actually.

I knew this coaster had a person on it to manually apply the brakes, but I didn't know they stood up throughout the ride! That's crazy!
they always have a team of breakmen(usually 3) operating it, they change over every ride. So the breaks guy doesn't get tired or too inbalanced.

Leap The Dips in Pennsylvania is actually the world's oldest roller coaster. It is also a side friction coaster and has a brake man.

Leap the dips doesn't have an on ride brake man.
Leap the Dips stopped running when the park ceased operating for a few years. so it doesn't count.
Go midweek during the school holidays and it's pretty much a walk up and ride it affair.... Guess who rode it twice today!!!! And the first breakman was Nutz, he just let the ride go, which really made it a great ride today....That was awesome, And i've ridden Superman Escape!!!

I went here last year and wanted to record the ride with my gopro but they wont allow me to do so, im very dissapointed because the view was magnificent during sunset. How did u managed to record this? And why i cant !

When you went on it, was it operating two trains? One reason why the ride is so busy on the peak days is because it was designed to be operated with two trains, but as you can guess happened, a breaksman fucked up his timing once and there was a serious collision accident on the ride in the mid 80's. They still operated it with two trains on the busy days in the 90s, but the last few times I've been, it's been running with just one train. Sad, and busier, but I guess it's safer.

@TheMiiJacob Because it's his job. As slow as that rollercoaster is by modern standards, it required a brakeman to keep it's speed to a safe level when cornering.
@SynthOrgan It must be the side friction as in the wheels itself because there is no way that is in the same vain as the Leap the Dips side friction coaster at Altoona,PA.

He does. Apparently the Scenic Railway is the only roller coaster in the southern hemisphere or the world with a standing brake person. It's printed on the back of the photo they give you at the end. I'm pretty sure he poses.
The Metropolis Coaster... the red Galaxi coaster in this video. IS GONE FOR GOOD. it was demolished in favour of a new rollercoaster currently believed to be a clone of Coney Island's new Tickler, a Crazy Coaster from Zamperla, who previously also cloned Coney Island Drop for Luna Park Melbourne in 2010!

Wrong. Leap the Dips is older. This was opened in 1911. Leap the Dips was opened in 1902. _However_, this is the oldest _continously operating_ rollercoaster, as Leap the Dips was closed for about 14 years between 1985 and 1999.

Luna Park really should get another permanent rollercoaster to go with it. So lonely by itself, the Park had two Rollercoasters for years. They should just install a permanant version of Zamperla's The Tickler(Aka Crazy Coaster) in the space where Metropolis once was. Time for another Rollercoaster guys. Besides Enterprise is getting dangerously old.
