Thank God that as humans we don't have to know or understand all the vast complexity of the Universe. We can try to understand and come up with we consider as our best provisional answers, but you can still find your own unique personal meaning of your life and try to enjoy it and find pleasure in it. Humans will never fully agree or reach consensus on what the meaning or truth of what Reality is nor is it necessary. We are definitely part of something greater than ourselves and share it's ultimate fate.

Just a question about the title. Why the philosophy of physics and why the philosophy of cosmology? Or is Why is there a philosophy of physics and cosmology? Seems like a couple of comments from others would like to keep the idea about what is significant in the cosmos out of the discussion. Some also would like to consider philosophy as superfluous and science as unimpeachable but are willing to define what science is. Anyone else had this experience?

After looking at most of the comments I want to enter a contrarian view. I think the every person has a philosophy. I think it strange that many are attacking philosophy. I think many who do so are not really questioning because they believe philosophy is meaningless as much as they have never completed some basic self-reflection to consider what their own philosophy is. My definition of philosophy is: Philosophy is the study of human existence.

Although life isn't exactly the opposite of entropy because it relies on an energy gradient, it's nevertheless an anti-entropic force. And because entropy can be regarded as synonymous with death (lim of entropy, mathematically), the purpose of life and intelligence is, necessarily, to find a way to prevent the heat death of the universe. It is currently regarded as physically impossible, but never discount the ingenuity of great future civilisations. If there's anything that can be regarded as truly transcendental in a seemingly materialistic universe, it's life and intelligence. And maybe these transcendental things can work true miracles.
If we can synthesise some objective meaning of life, it is to awaken the universe and prevent heat death.

Duality is a courtesy warning to human beings that science may be reaching its limit in both observational and logical domains. Scientific thinking is binary-value oriented. For example, formal logic, including both deductive and inductive, is such a binary mindset that the conclusions must be either true or false. Not only formal logic doesn't allow the third room in between, but the majority of today's scientists have also, more or less, some sorts of pre-determined, data fitting like desires too.

@@JeffChen285 When you say "the definition" what definition are you referring to? Your last sentence seems to be pessimistic. I would like to define science as problem-solving. If defined in this way, I think you could possibly agree that there is nothing like pursuing good explanations (the creative human ideas honed by error correction and elimination that we call science) that has solved so many problems in physics, biology, medicine, and other fields. It seems to me that the belief that such progress is now suddenly unsustainable is tantamount to a belief in the supernatural. Just a question, did you come about this idea by reading a book by Horgan? Also, no hypotheses are provable. That is why we talk about the theory of evolution and quantum theory. These theories will be replaced by something superior some day. They are full or errors. We just haven't discovered the errors yet.

Proposed correction: "The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline" ie. logical inferences, where the logic and / or the inference are subject, in principle, to empirical proof - eg. metaphysics, becomes hypotheses, becomes theory (=physics). Often emergent properties are the subject of philosophy because they exist in that they may be superficially described and have effects, but cannot be easily explained in the present, however in principle may be empirically defined and proved eg. causes, definitions, and effects of mind, morality, religion, etc.

@@bazstrutt8247 Surely you philosophise... or is it your opinion? - and what is the difference? :) PS I quoted the dictionary definition (...well, googled version) - not my opinion - you may check for yourself. Be positive and non judgemental (meaning don't make unjustified assumptions) kind sir. If philosophy doesn't interest you why watch & comment on this...? Perhaps you secretly do have an interest? At least I trust you so not troll? Philosophy is clearly not an empirical science but aims to extend science and areas of knowledge... so, as you say, the contents are often opinionative, but like science aim for consensus through debate and use of logic.
However when one philosophises one argues the explanation of the subject matter, question, or point rather than attack the other debaters as having no point to make so should be censured (called 'ad hominem')... which gains no support, creates conflict and division, and benefits no-one including the person making such an attack (who may appear foolish) against the person or group thereof (philosophy in this case) - that is my point. So assuming you have genuine and positive intent - Then stating that philosophy is 'opinionative and has no meaning' appears the same as 'blue is not blue' and so is meaningless without explanation and justification and so adds nothing.
Plus stating people hold their own view is self evident from the definition of 'people' and superfluous. Many views are held on football for example, but that doesn't mean those views are meaningless. So I hoped you would expand upon you apparent prejudice with some reasoning behind it, since clearly many would disagree. It appears you enjoy 'The philosophy of philosophy" - so one must ask why do you feel that way? or, what makes you say that? or are you simply stating you just have no interest?...
Given that others do have interest and see meaning in the subject, which you state the meaning eludes yourself and is your opinion, then respect, and freedom of thought and speech would seem to apply, and attempts at censure would seem antidemocratic and counter productive. There would seem little point in reviewing countless videos and stating ones opinion of interest or lack thereof, if no-one understand who one is, or why one says that? Else one might as well ask what does one think about religion or fractal crystallography or the corona policies of Knaith...
PS. Philo means 'love of', sophy means 'wisdom' of - hence your statement implies you may be stating you have no interest in wisdom, or that "wisdom is meaningless"... I must assume that is NOT what you meant to state...

Philo means 'love of', sophy means 'wisdom' of - hence your "garbage" statement implies you may be stating that "wisdom is garbage"... I must assume that is NOT what you meant to state... If it is it is what you meant, I would strongly suggest you keep that to yourself rather than broadcast it in public to avoid self humiliation. Though perhaps you troll... else why watch something you do not find interesting? ...'Of course' philosophy proves nothing by definition... it is perhaps closer to art than science - however it can generate a logical framework, that may become a hypothesis, that may be empirically tested, and which may become a theory if empirically correct...
That's what Einstein did - (read his 'gedanken experiments' - which were pure outlandish philosophy at the time with some hypothesised consequences considered antireligious (ie. 'politically sensitive')) - He went all the way from study of the untestable area of philosophy (which interested him)... to his tested theories some 15y later, and that modern society is based upon. All advances in science, and even in the arts, start with philosophy ('love of the wisdom') regarding the area of interest. Have you ever had an idea that you developed to a practical end? - I agree with the intent of your last line, though I would phrase it more positively and differently... "The more we learn, the more we find there is to learn"
PS. Cosmology was an area of philosophy throughout the ages, from Aristotle, from the Catholic church and other religions, and from Inca, and other ancient human curiosity... right up until Einstein & Hubble made it an empirical science (ie. provable, measurable, and researchable)

For one thing. I don't troll. I just don't like people using ideas for their own agenda.
Philosophy is just opinion. Your view of the world through whatever glasses you are wearing. What was once considered the wisdom of philosophers. And held dearly for generations, are now something to chuckle at. And wonder how they could have believed such things.
Even Einstein was looking through through his own glasses.
