- Finding Number 9
Frank Hagerty never gave up on tracking down one of the cars that first captured his imagination when he was a boy -- the 1948 Ford "Dunesmobiles" used to ferry tourists across the picturesque Sleeping Bear Dunes in northern Michigan. As we remember Frank, take a look back at the video documenting the search for his dream car.

Most of the best stories have nothing to do with expensive cars, just the simple ones.Great video!
I didn't expect this to be near so interesting, from so many points Not *_just_* a man looking for a car, but the history _in many directions,_ people coming together to make this happen with the end results being that *_thing_* that makes a community, a *_"community",_* rather than just a bunch of people living in the same area. And I had no idea that Michigan had sand dunes. *This is a great story.*
God bless him, must've been a wonderful passionate man, we've all lost cars, or some of us who loved vehicles have, and he was fortunate enough to find his dream, many of us recreate them to the best of our ability, recreations are nice, but that certain vehicle always stays in your heart.
Amen
Blah blah blah... woulda rusted ryte out !!!
It's the experiences that we go through with the vehicle that makes the vehicle much more special.
Deepest condolences on the loss of your Dad. I lost my Dad 30 years ago so be happy you had him so long&rest assured you're a great son&he's proud of you.
What a great story, I appreciate you taking the time to share it with me. I grew up listening to stories about these kinds of things. Their hearts touched my heart. My car was a 41 Chevrolet Special Deluxe. Thanks again
Hi Hagerty Classic Cars • An excellent video that gives the history of Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes. As a Michigander I also went there as a kid and remember the Dunesmobiles.
Graduated from CMU and went there a lot with my college friends. Thanks for sharing this Historic Part of Michigan as told by Frank. He will be remember by everyone.
Cheers from Michigan
Thank you for sharing this story of your father with your greater Hagerty family. This is a prt of what makes this a great way to insure my family's story.
Oh, man these videos aren't supposed to bring tears. What a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing.
What a story, truly enjoyed it. Rest in peace Frank, your inspiration lives on.
Thank you for making this and sharing it with world.
That was a very interesting story. Rest in peace, Frank Hagerty. God bless you.
What a great story! Bless him for never relenting! So nice that he got to see it completed. But even more than a award at Amelia Island, (no small feat) was the shine in Mr.Hagerty's heart! RIP, I know he is still cruising in Number 9, and still in his teens, with a smile a mile wide!
As a kid in the 1950s my uncle took us to the western Michigan sand dunes. We got a ride in a buggy called a "dune schooner". Wow! what a ride to remember even after all these years. This was near a town with a funny name of Paw Paw. Who could forget a name like that?
Truly unique story & vehicle! Good friend still has the '48 he owned in highschool. Though it's not a convertible or one with this cars history he treasures it. Thanks Hagerty.
its really awesome to know that so many spectrums of automotive history is being preserved.
Beautiful car. Very nice story. Glad she was rescued and restored. Hopefully someone will replace the bent driver front wheel or bad wheel bearing someday too.
What a wonderful story; fulfillment of a dream; the ultimate in life. Thanks for sharing a special man with us.
Here's one.
I have a friend who in high school @56 bought a 48, dated, married, and drove it until they traded for a new 62 Impala.
40 yrs later they are driving the same road and see a car for sale that looks like their old one. It has the custom tail lights that he installed in 57! He bought it back and installed a modern engine/trans and still has it. 👍👍
I found the Hagerty channel, and I truly enjoy the content you post. My favorite are the rebuild videos with Davin and his group. Interesting, straightforward, and inclusive sum up the content. Lots of humor included make it something I truly look forward to each time a new one is posted.
Hagerty=Quality!Being I car guy and knowing and loving the Frankfort to Glen Arbor part of Mich very well this vid touched me deeply.Thank You.
Thanks *****
what a beautiful story, god bless Mr Hagerty.
Large tyres on smaller rims still have way more traction today than the low profile tyres on a huge rim. A customer asked me to get a humble Ford Ranger 4x4 to stop getting stuck so much. I did nothing but change out his low profile tyres with big rims and put large tyres on a small rim on the Ford Ranger. Not only did the Ranger 4x4 look better, it does not get stuck in his farm and the logging trails anymore. The last I heard he sold the low profile tyres and big rims because he realised they were worthless.
Awesome story. Now I know why it was an absolute treat finding your channel! Thanks for sharing this!
My folks first new car was a 1948 Ford Convertible just like this one. Being born in ‘48 it holds dear memories. They kept that car until 1956 when my dad traded it in on a ‘56 Chevy Belair. Wow, such great cars.
These old cars mean so much to car lovers. My Brother & Dad loved Model A's, there gone now but I still have the model A coupe to hold on to memories. I prey they never outlaw them with all these new strict regulations.
I have had to watch this great story many times. Beautiful.
Great story, and it was put together perfectly, I’m sure that was one of the last things that sparked joy in his life
Rest In Peace
really lovely piece, thanks for making this.
Thank you for watching.
You make it sound like a painting
Great find and great story, RIP Frank Hagerty..He never gave up on his dream.
What a nice video. Very touching as well. Glad to see that he accomplished his mission. As a car guy, I totally understand.
Hagerty. The best auto content on all of youtube. You guys are awesome.
Great story. He deserved to be reunited with that car. The 1948 Ford was a superb car and a design classic with restrained styling and was very solidly built. IMO, it would sell well today if it was re-manufactured.
Great story, and a testament to our love for old cars and historical items!
Now over seventy as well, I can appreciate the love for those "objects" we call cars.
I have had my dream car since 1996. I wanted this vehicle since I was four years of age. I got the newest revision of it in 1996. Today, I still drive my aging beauty with pride and lots of love. Not many get their early childhood dream car because the car is either stopped being produced by the time they can get one, or they have changed so much by the time they can get a car that only the name remains with nothing resembling the vehicle they fell in love with at four years old. I got lucky. Mine barely changed from 1941 to 2006. I may get another vehicle someday. But I will never part with my dream vehicle. I know what I have. She is a treasure to me. The 23 years I have had her have been great together. Many times she is the only thing that makes me happy. I am sure I can get another 35 years out of her. After that, well, it will be checkout time. My old beauty will need someone else to care for her.
Hats off to Hagerty; both this channel and Mr. Frank. Excellent production, editing and composition. Chuck in Kansas
I love how Hagerty is based in northern MI, as a Detroiter, that is my favorite place to go.
One morning at breakfast this story comes on My screen, wow. Very cool...
Well that is the last of a great generation. I am so gald we have guys like that to keep our car history alive.
Wow, what a story! Sorry for your loss.
We'll never be the same without you, Frank.
-Everyone
RIP Frank
Keeping history alive 👏🙏🇺🇸❤️
If Mr Hagerty’s “ Dunesmobile “ meant as much to him as my 48 Sedan meant to me......... I understand. Great story of the facts of life pertaining to that “special” car that you remember over all the other ones you’ve owned.
After seeing this, I think I want to be a car guy. Great story. Thanks.
Loved your story, touched my heart
I'm from Traverse City and I've been to the dunes, but I've never heard of these cars until now. I've also driven in Traverse City winters for a few days without a heater, they must have stored these cars as soon as the snow fell...
I remember as a boy my dad took me to the Sleeping Bear Dunes in the very early 60 & we road in red & white 55 or 56 Oldsmobiles, I told my boys about it & they thought I was nuts, they said you couldnt drive a heavy car like that around the dunes, well about 8-yrs. ago we were at a car show at Hagertys in Traverse City, & there was one on display, I wasnt crazy no more.
unbelievable story! i loved it, bought a tear to my eye. your videos are great keep it up!
I love this channel, can't believe you guys don't have more subscribers keep it up!
Thanks. We can't believe it either. Tell a friend. :)
Great vedio. Great tribute. God bless you for making this vedio. Love ❤ from india
Thank you for sharing ,did not see that coming , WOW #9
I am searching for a car from my grandfather that was stolen 79 years ago and I will never give up
Wonderful story. Thank you for sharing.
I've always used Hagerty for my old rides. Darn good company to do business with.
That was really beautiful! Great story and a great car
His life was fullfilled having this car at last after searching it for 40 years. So he really is able to rest in peace now.
The dashboard looks like an exact replica of the "GAZ M-20 Victory" car on the 1947 . Приборная панель выглядит как точная копия советкой машины "ГАЗ М-20 Победа" 1947 года.
This channel is excellent. Needs more subscribers, but it's just a matter of time.
Quite a love story.
Super good channel, just finished the Barn Find series or what you have so far. Keep it up!
If ever there was a person committed to the hobby it would be Frank Hagerty.
I must realize that it's far too easy to look back in retrospect and wonder why people would be so foolish as to not save such great collectible cars.
Perspective; these were just old cars then and there were many more to go around! Plus, cars didn't last as long then (lubrication was more primitive and not all cars had oil filters.) Think of a rusted out 20 year old Honda and tell me if you'd want to keep that.
Austin Lucas no, because it’s a shitty import
Austin Lucas correct! my grandfather back in the 60s had 1934 ford coupe Australian model and he used it for speedway it had a mercury flathead in it he was the fastest in his class. After I think after a couple years he decided to get another car once again 34 coupe with a mercury in it but first race, first lap and first corner he rolled and he he stoped racing he was still into the sport right until he passed away last year. And once again they where just old cars nobody wanted them
Even today, people will trade their aging 1995 Mustang to get something much knew. Someday the 1995 Mustang will be collectible and a desired classic. The ridiculous Chevrolet Spark they traded the old Mustang for will never be considered anything but an economy pile of junk. A coworker actually did this. I was very disappointed with her. She complains the Chevrolet Spark is cramped, slow, and handles poorly. What did she expect? The Mustang was likely auctioned off to someone that will destroy it.
@@indridcold8433 one day that chevy spark will be collectible
Touching story, whew...
left front wheel is not properly bolted on
i saw that to
I saw that as well. Rear passenger wheel as well. Maybe it is the oversized tire?
Wheel balance is off or potentially rim out of tru if it was original.
Spotted that right away. Steering wheel has got to shake.
I also saw that
Never give up.
Never surrender
Surprised that a Michigan car of that vintage isn't completely rusted out.
I live in Michigan🤘🤘🤘 love this place but i live near Detroit but I feel so proud😢🤘
What a great story
Fantastic. Great history. :)
Wonderful. Thanks.
Awesome! Absolutely Awesome!
Great story!
I am so sorry I feel I miss him also.
This story would have been 💯%better without the annoying music!
9:14 that car's wheel is wobbling so it needs an alignment.
great save but 9:14 driver side front tire badly out of balance
where on earth did you find the balloon tires?
Wow ! Thanks
99999 good story and may that man RiP.
The old boy WON!... Before he passed. HuYah!
Love this video and thanks :-)
Wheel wobble at 9:14
Love it. That car's about the same age as me. Did any other dunesmobiles survive?
With a heavy sigh I say, no
+Dathugchannel Well nobody really knows for sure.
i mean, maybe, lets not jump to conclusions your right.
+Dathugchannel I mean the other cars could have been repainted and had the tires changed on them to make them road worthy. There is still a chance.
WE WILL FIND THEM
Lovely.
godspeed mr.H
I'm still looking for y old '47 merc. I sold to a guy but he never paid off and split. A preacher boy to boot.
What's with the loud monotonous music... Could barely hear the, tell the story for the noise.
Pity about the loud background music, spoils the whole video.
Great story!! Good 4 u.. From Steve ~ in Philadelphia PA, I'M ALSO A WILLIAMSON TRADE SCHOOL GRADUATE..IF U WANT A FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO COLLEGE CHECK OUT THE SCHOOL ON LINE?The best way I can represent the SCHOOL is by passing my info on....
All my dad's old cars got crushed :(
1963 Ford Galaxy 289 1966 olds cutlass 442 455ci 1985 trans am 350
Wasn't the car in the Karate Kid movie a 48 Ford convertible?
The start of the baja trucks?..
I had a 47 Ford I wish I had again. (got drafted and never saw the car again)
Find one for sale, you can enjoy one again.
IT NOT GOING TO BE DRIVEN, DOESNT MATTER IF IT BOGGERED UP
Cool!
I never knew Mickey Rooney was a car buff.
Datsunmod elosetenta
Just looking at that beautiful classic car makes you realize that back then AMERICANS built real cars with unique features and body styles. Now all we get are the worthless cookie cutter roiling computers that all want to look like Toyota's and CRAP like that!
The music is louder than the voices. Booooooo
Immagine if you could do time travel.
Lemme guess, it was in the last place he looked for it.
Why music when someone is talking? It is annoying!
what's with the awful background music drowning out the conversation?
