    Now THAT is the most perfect example of what a therapist is and is supposed to be!. "I'm a Therapist. I don't give advice, I offer observations and I pose questions". What a brilliant scene.

    • @alittlebirdysaid
      @alittlebirdysaid 4 роки тому +26

      Is it? Don't get me wrong, she's astute and awesome, but in my experience of therapy they certainly do offer suggestions of advice, because people aren't always equipped to answer the questions they pose on their own.

    • @drakenfist
      @drakenfist 4 роки тому +35

      @@alittlebirdysaid No. A good therapist leads that person to finding that answer, they direct them towards it. People think they want suggestions or advice, but in truth they don't. They could easily get that from friends and family, and usually when they do, they reject it.
      True change has to come from the answers within the individual, because they are the ones that know themselves and their situation the best. Not from others.

      @@drakenfist Effective advice can only happen when the client and therapist both have real insight and awareness, so the subject does have a role in determining outcome. But a big part of therapy is learning healthy, constructive techniques and strategies for dealing with the things you want to change. That's not something you can pluck out of your inner consciousness, or something loved ones are always capable of giving. That's what you want from an expert without an agenda. A therapist.

    A character doesn't always have to be likeable for them to be a good character. Real people are not always likeable. All the characters on this show have flaws, some of them very unattractive flaws. But that's what makes them so real and relatable to us.

    "Your mother and I are the same gender. We're the same race. I am probably around the same age as she was when your father died." I had chills when she said that line. There are moments in this story that remind you of how powerful this story is. This is one of those moments. She was able to piece together why Randall became the person he became in a matter of minutes.

    I'm a training therapist and this is the best example of therapy I've ever seen in media. They do it perfectly. He is resistant to the idea of therapy thinking how can anyone see something I can't. He plays that out by guessing what she's thinking... Something basic surface and simple. And she uncovers the deeper more serious issue that he may never have seen on his own. And she asks the right questions so he can make his own decisions about what to do with that information. Love it. Very good therapy. I could dream of being that good one day.

His mother is ill and he needs to address how losing his last surviving parent is forcing him to confront the fact that he can't control everything in his life.
