I'm so glad I found your channel awhile ago. I have a Doberman that was apparently abandoned who just showed up at my house in the country starving. He was so wild and crazy I thought I was going to have to get rid of him. I'm a senior citizen and have some balance issues. Thanks to your channel I've been able to train most of that wildness and undisciplined behavior out of him. He's now much calmer and more well-behaved, and he's become a good friend. Thanks so much for your videos.
Bless you for putting in the effort that his previous owner did not! Sounds like a nice dog for you. Would be nice if a photo could be added in comments!
@@pjm0621 I think the type of Doberman is called red (?). He's chocolate brown. I already had two dogs when he showed up. One of my other dogs, a male, died suddenly of a series of strokes about 2 weeks after the Doberman showed up. I named the Doberman Eddie.
Wow that is a REALLY touching story! I'm so happy that Eddie found you (and you him)! I'm so glad I could help support you in that. You did a really good thing. Please let me know if you need anything.
I am so excited. I have finally found a Doberman breeder that I think I can work with. In two weeks I go to meet the breeder and her dobies. The female is blue and the male is black and rust. She is expecting a mixed litter. European bloodlines. Your videos just became twice as important to me. Thank you and give Arlo a scratch for me. The two of you are great role models

Totally agree Piper. Just a little work each day really does go a long way... It's great to see you here in the comments again! Always appreciate your support!
Loved seeing the "dog trainer" side of you. A lot of dog channels on here love to humanize their dogs and generally just have no idea that their habits are reinforcing bad behaviors every day. So refreshing when you come across people who know what they're talking about lol
John, I’m getting my first Dobbie in a few months and I feel like a new parent! Trying to make sure I have everything he needs and make sure that I’M prepared to make him the best doggo he can be. I’ve been binging your videos like crazy and they are soooo helpful thank you!!!!
Be ready for ridiculous energy. Mine is 12 weeks and i have a massive backyard and take him for 1 mile walks in mornign and night. still doesnt stop jumping aroudn and going crazy inside
Congrats on your puppy on the way! That's great. I'm so glad I could be of some help... really is great to hear! Good luck and hang in there. They can test your patience a bit when their young but if you are consistent and do what you know you should do then you'll get past those puppy stages successfully and have a really great adult. I'm excited for you! Take lots of pictures and videos, they grow too quick!
I have to say my Dobermans are actually couch potatoes and they're not fat. When they go outside they run, but inside, they're chill. I guess it's because I insist on it. Have even mentioned it to breeders who laugh and say like there is such a thing as a calm Dobe. I didn't get a dog from that breeder....
Our 5 month old dobbie loves to put his paws up on the kitchen counter 😅 It's endless no and down. Anyway, their impuls control indeed is amazing, they learn it in NO time. I am amazed about how fast he learns and how smart he is. ❤

Hi John, Arlo is looking beautiful , what a chunk. Bear has just turned 1 years old 🎂 now and in his teens, so like you said John training never stops, never. If you don’t train them, they will train you!!! 🐻🐻🐻❣️
Oh my gosh, that tea party! I can't imagine how many takes that took. I love your videos, been watching them nonstop the past couple of weeks as we prepared to get our dobie puppy. She's 7 weeks old and starting all the training you have recommended for her age and she's doing well so far, very smart! We are having to reward her with her own kibble and "good girl"s though. Rewarding with treats was terrible for her little puppy tummy and gave her serious diarrhea. Thanks for continuing your channel, looking forward to the next video!
My dobe pup had an issue with jumping up in her early months. I learned a technique that went something like this. With a dedicated training session and treats on hand. Encourage the dog to jump up on you. As soon as the dog tries, back up a step and say something like "hey". The dog will stop jump, mark and reward. Start reducing the reward quickly once the dog has learned to stop jumping on your mark. Make the reward more random for some future training sessions. She learned this very quickly and I was amazed how quick it worked. Her jumping was a real problem. There are some videos on this technique on youtube. Arlo continues to look fantastic. I love the euro!
Superb again John ! Praise and reward, consistency and best of all, make things YOUR habit. Terrific advice, have shared this with friends who have dogs - sadly, none have Dobermans - because I think your advice would work with most breeds. Maybe not so well with some as they are not as intelligent as Dobermans, but at least the owners will have a better idea on how they should be behaving with their dog. As always, keep up the excellent work and Arlo is such a dude !
Man Michael that really means a lot that you enjoyed the video and got something from it. Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment, it really did make my day!
Haha I love how Arlo reacts to every single word you tell him in tea time. I did the same thing except the fancy close lol only thing is I said “yes you may” and he started licking his tea. Your videos are great and Arlo is doing amazing I’ve been watching since you brought him up. 🤗👍✊💪
Great advice 👏 I'm instilling threshold before and after with our 11 week old dobie.. It's rainy season so it's great to have him sit nicely once inside the door while I dry him and his paws off.
Gaetano Zannelli Yeah! Have fun. It is a great ride. Just remember to socialize socialize and socialize. People can’t believe my dog is a “killer” breed as portrayed in the movies.
Doberman Planet i really am enjoying them. I really want a doberman and have done already much research. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I am 17 and know that it wont be best for the dog for someone who is still in school and part time work to take care of a velcro dog. One day though I will go back to your videos to help me and my puppy. Hopefully you'll still be making great videos for us!
Thanks so so much for all those tips is really helping me , we just got our Doberman pincher female puppy two weeks ago , yes I’m working with her not to be biting so much
So glad to hear! Thank you. And congrats on the new pup, you're going to have a blast. Just do what you know is right and hang in there. It can be tough during that first year!
Wow. Many thing I am learning from your Chanel. I did not know about Dobermans. Actually I really like them at least what is bread into them. Some individual dogs may be a pain but your is actually amazing. I would never consider a Doberman before But now I am seeing a lot of things I love. Thank you for sharing
Omg man your channel is just amazing I have been learning so much from your tips n guides. I literally have seen all your videos like 3 or 4 times , some one even 10 or so... just wanted to show some appreciation, real happy to find y9ur channel
As always your spot on. I loved how you pointed out the Doberman thinking part. That’s one thing that truly sets them apart from other breeds. Your Arlo is coming along beautifully. Can’t wait to see him at a year and at two yrs old when that thinking brain wants to test you. Lol
Oh man Janet, I'm excited/nervous for that too! Haha. But I won't let Arlo know that! Thanks so much for your support. Really nice to see you in the comments again!
I agree dont feed them anywhere other than their bowl, we trained our last girl she had to wait until after we ate our evening meal. We did feed her scraps and she was 100% trustworthy with food left out. She was fed twice a day once in the morning after her walk and after we had dinner at night. I prefer not to train using treats. Some dogs are simply driven by food more than others.
Did you work with Arlo on his "indoor" voice? Spot on with manners: greeting, doors and stairs. I've been lucky with counter surfing. I put a lot of energy into aveting issues at feeding time. (jumping, pushing and of course any aggression). I think the feeding manners carried over to the other potential food stuffs. (Garbage, food on counters, toddlers with animal cookies...) The Doberman dialogue over tea was funny.
really love and appreciate the time and effort put into this....the skits and thorough explanations make everything so easier and it really shows your love for this breed...... it's really rare to find people take such good initiative.
Thanks for the that you have been posting, been working my puppy with quite a bit of the tasks. She is doing good for two months, great on the potty deal a couple of misses. All is working in just fine the door deal is great thanks, working on the human food to ignore my meals.
We are in the first week with our Doberman pup and love your channel and have learned so much, thank you. Have you done a video on leash training? thanks again
I do a door exercise. All my dogs, 2 of which are Red Dobermans, sit at any door because they know that's how it gets opened. At first I would say Sit/wait, then the release word (Free). The reward is going in/out of the door. Start at an inside door to practice. The first time you say Sit/wait, you won't even be able to touch the doorknob before the butt gets up. Hands down at side, standing straight up, Sit/wait, hand on knob, may be able to turn the knob before the butt gets up, turn knob back, hands at your side, Sit/ wait, now maybe open the door a crack before the butt gets up, close the door, hands off the knob, hands at your side. Sit/wait, until you are able to have the dog remain in the same position while you walk through the door (I step away from the dog on the foot furthest from the dog as an extra clue they are to wait there rather than follow you) then turn back to the dog after you are on the other side of the open door. Free - the dog can then come through the door. I use wait because they are going to be able to move in a few. When I use Stay, the dog is safe and nothing bad is going to happen to them. I will come back to the dog to release them. They don't move until I come back to them before giving the release word. For the door exercise though it's wait and every single door, same exercise. Eventually you get to a door, your dog just automatically sits, without you having to say a word. They wait till you give them the release word.
Very humbly... One mistake I see people make a lot is naming a behavior before teaching the behavior. Shaping the behavior before putting a name to it will set your pup up for success rather than failure.
Hi, John, u r doing a good job, my puppy Doberman is 4.5months, use to have Rottweiler, but this little one yes, every reward for a single task ,with a single word command, for sure is moving me, with a lot of affection & notice needs socialize, because every outside environment is doubtful & therefore kind of enemy, jaja, regards andres
Thank you, John! I've been taking a lot of notes and I really enjoy your videos. We're getting a Doberman pinscher puppy next May. I'm so glad I found your channel! Thank you again for posting and updating your videos! I found your website useful too! 🙏🙏🙏
Hi John, first of all I really love your channel and hope youll keep the good work with it. Second - sorry for my english. I would like to ask you: my wife and I decided to buy a house and start a family. We love dogs. I rised and trained hungarian viszla, took care of golden retriever, help to rised two bassets and we will finally have space to have a dog by ourselfs. I would love to have guardian dog so my family feels safe when im out of town and alert potential visitors/intruders to pick some other house or use the doorbell at the gate before entering my property. Problem is my wife get easily scared (got scared by basset "evil", as she mention, barking) and looking at doberman gives her chills and terrifies her. She tries to get more information, she understands they are good quality dogs but she thinks she will be affraid of the dog. I tried to find some videos of dobbies having fun but there were usually large ones not behaving or not responding to the command of their master. Could you recommend what to tell/show her to change her mind or put her mind on ease? I saw the video where you told about dobermans attacks and how there are only 6 cases and it could be intruder not the owner but maybe i need something more owner perpective like. Thank you and thanks for all the videos. Michael
Your channel provides so much information and has been really helpful! Could you do a video on grooming, how much they shed, and how often you bathe them?
Wonderful video!!! My dobie, 3 months old, is so far to be like Arlo!!! But in the last scene who is drinking the tea with you? Because you can see Arlo outside from the door... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi John . We have been wanting to get a Doberman for a while. Awaiting to hear from the breeder now.Never had a dog before. Your channel has been a life saver to understand and learn about them. Pls keep up the good work. Also if possible do let us know the difference between a male and female in reference to what suits a household better. We have 2 cats and the puppy will adjust better if it’s a femaile as males are more territorial. That’s our thought.Do share your thoughts. Cheers.
Your training methods are very on point with this breed! You have a very good understanding of how they think and how to get us to think like them! Any advice on how to get my doberman to be a swimmer? He likes it but fears it, and it's a very good swimmer lol. He doesnt use his back legs too much. I have two labs so maybe my standards are too high lol.
Thanks so much Maria! I actually spent a lot of energy on an article going really in depth on the whole swimming topic awhile back that might be of interest to you. Here's the link: www.dobermanplanet.com/getting-your-doberman-to-love-swimming/ But yeah, I don't think it's fair to compare your pup to a lab! Haha.
As always great info! I love watching your videos as we all do. Been wanting to ask a question for a while now, ive not looked it up yet but where did you get the statue one the desk top behind you? The Dobie bust. I love it
Hey John, first off i want to thank you for the content you provide. I've been watching your videos for quite some time now and learned so much in my research of getting a Doberman. I actually flew from Florida to California about 3 weeks ago to pick up my doberman puppy. I have some questions/help im in need of with my new family addition lol. If possible would there be a way to get some advice?
First, I love your channel! You pack a lot of great information into compacted videos where those with shorter attention spans, (like my hubby), are happy to watch them; -and like a dog, it's all about keeping them happy, right? My question though, is which crop style did you use on Arlo's ears? He's gorgeous! We're picking up our baby girl, (European), in a couple of weeks and I'd like her to have the same crop.
Great vid John. My Dober is 5 months as well. I was wondering if you are done posting his ears? They are looking great as well. I know there are many options and opinions when it come to posting so I was wondering what your thoughts were
I'm not done with Arlo, but I'm close. Another few weeks or so probably. His ears stood very quickly. Usually by 5 or 6 months you can start leaving out the posts for longer periods and see how long before the ears start to flop. If you can go a few days with no flopping then your dog is probably done. Some dogs won't get there until 8 to 12 months depending on the individual dog and the length of the crop.
Thank you! Your's are the only training techniques that have been helpful to my 14wk old boy and myself. I'm having problems with Riley jumping onto the backs of my legs while I'm walking around the yard. How would you suggest I handle this? If I turn around and say "no jump" he just runs off.
Love your channel. Im retired with lots of free time on my hands. I decided I want to use my free time to train a companion for hiking bikepacking and kayaking. I would also like to compete in obedience completions. I want my pooch to be very disciplined with professional training in conjuction with self training. I'm researching breeders and I was wondering how to go about increasing my chances of picking a puppy with a high level of intelegance or is it luck when picking a puppy for intelligence?
I have tried to teach my dog that she is "Bella," and I am "Mr. V." At first she looked at me like I was an alien. I generally eat at the same time as Bella. If I am preparing food for Bella, I will point to the food and say "Bella." Same with my food: my food is "Mr. V." I really think that she understands.
I'm so glad I found your channel awhile ago. I have a Doberman that was apparently abandoned who just showed up at my house in the country starving. @@DobermanPlanet We live in citrus heights and found our pup in fair oaks....I saw you got Cooper in Sacramento so I assume you're local....?
I have a cocker spaniel but I really love your videos. Dog lover here ❤
Thank you so much!!! 😁👍
Awesome video
The intro was so funny for some reason lolll 😂
Great video, AGAIN! Arlo looks great brotha!
Hey thanks Khali! Much appreciated!
They love to know what you want. The more positive direction you can give a dog the happier they are.
I learned something new today. Thanks.
Very humbly... One mistake I see people make a lot is naming a behavior before teaching the behavior. Shaping the behavior before putting a name to it will set your pup up for success rather than failure.
the begging was so cute
Miss my doberman ! But arlo is the cutest well temperamental smartest pup ! Love him so so cute ! Good job with the videos * thanks

Thank you Keith! It really means a lot that you're enjoying it!
Thank you, John! I've been taking a lot of notes and I really enjoy your videos. We're getting a Doberman pinscher puppy next May. I'm so glad I found your channel! Thank you again for posting and updating your videos! I found your website useful too! 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for all these information
Of course! Thank you so much for your support.
Great video! So excited to get our Dobie next year.
I really like your vids man. I mean I dont have a doberman i have a rottweiler but a lot of the things you say seem to apply
Great advice
Love your channel
Great information!!
Mr. Arlo ❤️❤️
Great tips
You guys are great
Your dog is so good
I loved everything about this video
Thank you so much Karen, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful video!!! My dobie, 3 months old, is so far to be like Arlo!!! But in the last scene who is drinking the tea with you? Because you can see Arlo outside from the door... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That skit was so funny.
Cheers.
great video bro
Thanks so much Weston!
Good manners are important! Nobody wants a doberman without it 🤣
Your training methods are very on point with this breed! You have a very good understanding of how they think and how to get us to think like them! Any advice on how to get my doberman to be a swimmer? He likes it but fears it, and it's a very good swimmer lol. He doesnt use his back legs too much. I have two labs so maybe my standards are too high lol.
Use a life west to help him feel secure and be more horizontal in the water. Touch the pads of his back paws to help him "find" them in the water.
Could you film a full day of what you do with Arlo from waking up to going to bed and educate new owners on how they should exercise they’re puppy
Where in europe is your Dobi from. Beautiful
I just got my Doberman yesterday
Congrats!
I am obsessed with Arlo....in my mind we are friends 😂
