- I along with Opposition Spokesperson on Labour and Social Security, MP Angela Brown Burke met with Vincent Morrison President of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), Leonard Green, Attorney-at-Law and other members of the task force formed by security guards to discuss the current employment issues being faced.
This ties back to the situation where the Supreme Court has ruled that the security guards are in fact employees and gave the security companies until April 1 to rectify this. The security companies response has been to have the guards sign contracts that would have them give up all their accrued rights from the past (i.e. vacation, overtime). Naturally the guards are very reluctant to do this as that would be very unfair.
The guards are prepared to be reasonable however, they are not willing to relinquish their rights. The government has once again, in a dereliction of duty washed their hands of the situation telling the guards to go to court .
We need a #NewDirection and approach to such situations. One that ensures open conversation and consultation with all parties.
I am calling on the Prime Minister to intervene in this situation and bring the parties to the table for negotiation. #TimeCome
