The fact that the director of Godzilla Minus One praised it and made valid points about how Godzilla is alongside him taking a picture with Adam Wingard a couple of days ago says a lot, that should be enough to put the haters to rest. I can't wait to see GXK when it releases

To be completely honest , I was not a fan of the Legendary Godzilla after 2014 film for me he looked like a fat crocodile, but after getting the movie I always wanted in Godzilla Minus One, a movie true to the Godzilla's origin, now I have learned to appreciate a different kind of Godzilla in the Monsterverse Universe. His proportions make him more agile and more powerful. Different roar , different atomic breath , different human perspective, Different theme song, why not? We now have different Godzillas and different great Kaiju content 🙂Something Godzilla fans could only dream 10 years ago.@@Supiragon1998
I love the Monster Verse, but I also love the old Godzilla movies growing up. I feel like we should all be happy that we have monster movies to watch. And also that it's not just one choice. You get to choose what you want to watch. When I was a kid you took what you got and you liked it. Because there was nothing else to choose from. So I think all the arguing and stuff about these movies is ridiculous. Enjoy what you enjoy and let others enjoy what they enjoy.
Amen! They are all fun. An unpopular opinion would be my 8 year old's who fussed in the middle of Minus 1 and said "I'm bored, where is Godzilla?" He was happy at the end but lets all remember that these are films that inspire the kid in us with awe and spectacle. Even if we want our favorite monster to have credibility as a mainstream movie, we're there for the fun. We don't have to evolve... we have Godzilla for that 🙂
I hope that the international recognition Takashi Yamasaki recieved for Minus One opens up new avenues for him in the future. Also hope they green light a sequel as well

Godzilla is a very versatile character. Same with King Kong who started in 1933 as an allegory for slavery, imperialism, and capitalism before Kong dies tragically. Beauty killed the beast. While I haven’t seen every Godzilla movie yet, I understand his appeal as a character. As a kid growing up, I was very much into dinosaurs 🦖. Godzilla is this supersized dinosaur with many different designs, an atomic breath and this cool spine and roar. He’s great at selling toys these last 60-70 years. MonsterVerse is entering their Showa Era with the fun and campy Big G stuff and I’m all for it. Not every Godzilla movie should be serious as Minus One. Same with Kong who’s movies were always more tragic at the end. I do think MV can be all over the place with the tone of their movies. Godzilla 2014 was very serious like the 1954 movie and Minus One are. Then by KOTM and GvK, they decided to honor the 60s Godzilla. Then they went back being more dramatic with Monarch. Now back to silly and fun with GxK.

I love how positive you are but I just want to say that King Kong never was an allegory for slavery or capitalism. The original directors detailed his vision for the film several times and it's been consistent that Merian C. Cooper was inspired by his travels and journeys to the Congo and heard different stories and tales about gorillas. (which in 1933 were a somewhat newly discovered species). He then wanted said gorilla to fight a Komodo dragon and then the idea evolved into the story we know today. The themes of man's hubris as well as a scared animal lashing out against the society that chained him up, so he takes the one he loves and tries to escape to no avail. So althought what you said about Kong wasn't the original director's vision that is an interesting way to look at the film.
Ive grown up watching every Godzilla film. Man in suit was what you got and i personally loved it as a kid. Today weve got all these awesome special effects and decent stories and action. My honest opinion is embrace it in all its forms. From start to finish. Toho's back in the day versions, to Shin, Legendary, and minus one. These are indeed the glory days for Godzilla fans and i love them all in any format. From serious characters to all out brawls!! Ive loved Godzilla from my childhood, and the same in my later years. Keep em coming!!!
I really don't like Monsterverse, I think they are made for children. I did love Minus One. I think I'd like the Monsterverse movies if they were suitmation.
At the end of the day I think the monstervers is trying to do a little bit of everything. 2014 is like 1954s dark tone, king of the monsters 2019 like the hesi king of the monsters it even had burning Godzilla and GvK and GxK is like Showa, if that’s case I think it’s cool.
Godzilla vs Megalon is still fun to watch when you consider the time that film was made, but hopefully we don't get that level of silliness in 2024 with The New Empire@@TiffanyAllen1

The thing with the monster verse is like so many other franchises (fast n furious, transformers a lot of marvel etc) it could be so bad and corporate but it’s not. The movies are no masterpieces but big fun and solid movies they definitely are. Showing how to do it right even when changing plans up through the films

I'm an OG Godzilla fan who grew up watching every Toho Showa era Godzilla and Sci Fi title that had North American theatrical releases. I've watched all the Heisei and Milennium era films (some of them in theatres) and loved those too. I liked the Netflix "Monster Planet" trilogy and even though it had a complicated narrative making for a more challenging watch, "Godzilla: Singular Point"... That all being said, I'm a huge Minus One fan (because I'm a huge Takashi Yamazaki fan) and I also love Legendary's MonsterVerse cycle of films as well as their "Monarch: LOM" Apple TV series. These different iterations and interpretations can and do co-exist in the world's longest running monster franchise. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses. I can't understand why there's so much faction-ism in G-fandom nowadays. Drama, flame wars and disrespect seem to be the rule rather than the exception. Live and let live, people. it's supposed to be entertainment and fun, not arguments and divisiveness. That's it...
Godzilla Minus One was a masterpiece and by far my favourite Godzilla Movie of all time, tied with Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I’m glad that Godzilla x Kong is getting praised and it only makes me look forward to seeing this movie even more.

It's cool Yamazaki liked the film. I won't lie, as a writer myself I'm a guy who tends to gravitate towards films which are good films and stories first, and visual spectacles second. I guess that's why I prefer Minus One and films like 1954's Gojira, 1984's Return of Godzilla, and 1995's Godzilla vs Destoroyah to recent Monsterverse content, as well as a lot of the mid 60's-70's content. During that time Toho seemed to stop caring about having a story in the film at all and just threw together whatever half-assed plot could put Godzilla in the path of the other monster of the day. For me, the latter Showa period content is the hardest to watch of the original films. For the Monsterverse, I started off loving it and having really high expectations for its future. 2014 had its problems (like Ford being a reactionary character with no charisma or capacity to serve as a leading role), but it's by far the best of the Monsterverse in terms of actually having a story to tell which supersedes the monster action in terms of its importance. The whole idea of "what if it were real" had me hooked. And I was really hoping Gareth Edwards would come back to direct again because his direction style, his sense of scale, and the results of his work and vision alongside the cinematographer from the Lord of the Rings was sublime. The only change I would've made to the core staff would be firing Max Borenstein (whose writing is still ATROCIOUS to this day) and hiring another more seasoned screenwriter to helm the next film. Minor rant incoming: Borenstein is the reason 2014 had its problems narratively (like Ford's lack of charisma and his reactionary nature which is impossible to lead a film with). He was (and still is, as far as I'm concerned) a less-experienced and far less talented screenwriter than ANYONE who'd touched the screenplay before him. Why they brought him in for final touch ups is beyond me. I've seen the leaked original screenplay by David S Goyer, and Borenstein should NEVER have been allowed to come within a mile of this film. He and his "touch ups" absolutely made it worse than what it was before. Mini rant over. Skull Island was okay. My only real issue with it was the melodramatic approach they took with Samuel L's character. It was a bit too much. Other than that it was a really fun time. And it fit the aesthetic 2014 started really well. I was interested to see what would happen with Kong and whether or not Godzilla would eventually make his way to Skull Island, or if Kong would somehow get off of it or if something else would happen to the island itself to force Kong's hand, so to speak. KOTM is where they started to lose me. What began as a grounded, "what if it were real" situation in 2014 had devolved into complete Toho 2.0 high fantasy BS complete with nostalgia grabbing bits like Rodan Ex-Machina, wasting Serizawa with a meaningless and purposeless sacrifice since it literally didn't need to happen because they had options for getting the nuke to Godzilla without anyone going into the chamber (like putting the nuke in the seat of the mini sub Serizawa took and putting it on auto pilot as but one example), and they wasted the Oxygen Destroyer and forever tarnished its legacy as the device which killed Godzilla. Thanks to Dougherty, it now has a single failure to its name which is canon since the Monsterverse is considered canon to the franchise. Thanks a lot Dougherty for tarnishing its perfect record. I'm sure Toho appreciates that as well. But back to the story... How does a woman (Emma Russell) who loses her home, her marriage, and one of her children to the Titans end up as a fanatical supporter of them to the point she's willing to partner with eco terrorists to set them free from the containment facilities? The entire premise of the film falls apart with minor scrutiny of that detail. As I said before, if the writing sucks the film will suck no matter who the writer is. And KOTM, as a film (not necessarily an entertainment experience), absolutely sucked. Again, as a film, it sucked. It's still entertaining to watch. And Bear McCreary's musical score does wonders to turn what is otherwise a total dirt clod into at least a shiny stone (not necessarily a gem). The CGI is amazing, and I'd argue Godzilla looks his best in this film compared to either 2014 or GvK (and The New Empire based on what I've seen from the trailers). But, sadly, entertaining as the film is it still sucks. That's one of the reasons why everyone who watches the film fasts forward to the monster action and ignores everything else. That's literally proof that the film, as a film, sucks. I've never met a single Godzilla fan who fasts forward through 1954's Gojira because the entire film, even when Godzilla's offscreen, because the film is a good film first and its story is worth wading through to get to Godzilla's big moments. KOTM, unfortunately, couldn't do that. Everyone fasts forward through it because there's nothing else to experience. Godzilla vs Kong was by far the worst of the series so far for me. I don't know how they did it. But the premise of GvK was even more nonsensical than KOTM. For instance, straight away at the beginning of the film Godzilla arbitrarily, and without any explanation given, went on a rampage against the other Titans prior to this film's events because... Why? They all bowed to him in the last one. But he's out there murdering them and hunting down Kong because he left Skull Island even though he stayed out of Godzilla's known territorial waters... Why? Why did they paint Godzilla as a villain for the first half of the film? Cause he was absolutely a villain. Not an anti-hero. A villain. As a writer, I know the difference. He was a villain. No question. He didn't turn into an anti-hero until MechaG showed up. And why MechaG? Did anyone in the writer's room consider why humanity would ever actually want to create a mechanical Godzilla when the very notion is beyond stupid in terms of how much money, time, and manpower would be wasted building it when Godzilla's radiation alone would be enough to fry every circuit in it and turn it into a giant paper weight? You could radiation-shield the entire surface if you wanted. But that's not going to stop the atomic breath. It's literally a concentrated stream of superheated radiation. A little bit of shielding isn't gonna protect human engineering from that kind of heat or radiation. "Fantasy" genre be damned. Anyway, on to The New Empire. Just because Yamazaki thought it was good doesn't prove it actually is "good" as a film. He had fun watching it, meaning it's going to be an entertaining experience. That doesn't mean it's going to be a good film, though. The two concepts are fundamentally different. KOTM was an entertaining experience and sucked as a film, just as GvK did. I won't be the least bit surprised if The New Empire gets ripped apart in the exact same way and for the exact same reasons as KOTM and GvK by all the critics and UA-cam reviewers, even those who are Godzilla fans like Angry Joe. But we'll see.

Wow, this is the first review I’ve ever seen that dislikes both Goji: King of the Monsters(2019), and Goji vs Kong(2021). Your points made a lot of sense and were insanely valid. Don’t get me wrong I’m a 19 year old guy and I’m excited for the film, but I have a feeling it’s gonna get a good amount of backlash because here’s one thing the MV just can’t get right……the human plot. Goodness the human plot isn’t really that good in the MV, now with Goji (2014) and Kong: Skull Island(2017) they were solid, it’s just that ever since Goji: King of the Monsters(2019) the plot was bad and in GvK it was terrible and pointless. However, I have good faith with Goji x Kong: The New Empire because we are promised a lot of kaiju action(60 minutes in total) and just an entertaining ride. Plus, I’m ready to see Shimu, or Shimo same thing, and how she’s gonna function. I especially love her Frostbite Blast and her overall design. Maybe it’ll surprise me with the plot this time, who knows.
Minus One was the best movie of 2023 for sure. Got very lucky to catch a screening at IMAX in my town. Already got the tickets to the New Empire as well. Don’t have huge expectations, but let’s see 👀 I think it was just a polite way of Mr. Yamazaki to tell us that it’s not completely bad😅
I think that his statements show a lot of class and truth. We basically have two different flavors or, eras, of Godzilla being represented near simultaneously on the big screen this year. One is more serious while the monsterverse is showa era fun and crazy. As Godzilla fans we are eating good!!!
You know why theirs a difference because Godzilla is a representation of the nuke during WW2. When they tell the story Godzilla is a destructive demon with no care of human life but when U.S tell the story he's damaging and harsh but necessary hero.
I'm a Godzilla fan, period, so I will always watch a Godzilla movie. Unless of course, if its loaded with propaganda. Then I will reject it. But otherwise, I love all forms of Godzilla. Having said that though, Godzilla minus one, is a great film. Which I saw 5 times. But the monsterverse Godzilla, I will watch also. Cuz I'm a Godzilla fan!!
Japanese people are very polite in general so I take it with a grain of salt but it sounds promising nevertheless! So far only the Skull Island and the firstt new Godzilla standalone movies were good, the team ups lacked a lot. The showa team ups are still better than the new godzilla/kong movies but I have high hopes this one will live up to them!
I will always prefer the more serious Godzilla films like minus one or shin. But the monster verse is fun. Just like the original Godzilla versus King kong. Who doesn't like a bunch of monsters running around demolishing cities and beating each other up. There's room in the world for both types of Godzilla movies. 😊 If the Big G is in it I'm watching it.

I think everyone just needs to calm down and enjoy that we have so many movies we can enjoy. How many times have we all sat down and watched the old-school films and wished this would come true. Every movie doesn't need to be high-concept. Truth be told, the Godzilla in Minus-1 isn't soooooooo different. He's more of an archetype and doesn't like humans. But he's a movie monster that trashes stuff. And thank goodness.

If he said bad things about legendary he could get in trouble with higher ups and not be able to make more godzilla movies. I can tell this by his last statement. "They balance the monsters and humans well" thats just not true and he knows it. We all do. Legendary cant write humans to save lives. Its the one thing that cant do."
@gojiratown2369 sadly ive seen the movie and its basically gvk 2. Same poor human acting besides the mother figure and Gia. The black guy is still annoying comedy. The monster fights are cool but that's all it has going. It's just a monster brawl with no substance.
The Monsterverse is the true successor to the classic Showa / Toho films. Tbh only '54 kept a serious tone from Raids again and even '84 to Final Wars were made to be fun films with such classic lines as "That Godzilla is one tough dude" to purposely ironic deaths. Toho has redifined itself with Shiin & -1.0 Which is my all time favorite film. Those complaining these films aren't like the toho classics need to buy the criterion Showa set and the other blu ray releases I think they'll be surprised by what they watch as opposed to what they think they remember the films to be

I agree, both have great Godzilla content. Legendary Godzilla 2014 is totally different than than Minus One. Both have a serious tone, and both are entertaining by showing Godzilla versions that we had never seen before. Keep the great Godzilla content coming 🔥🔥
There’s a long history of the Japanese Godzilla directors, in particular, not criticizing other directors’ G movies while they’re in theaters. It’s an acknowledgment of how challenging making a G movie is, and always has been. That’s not to say that Yamazaki-san doesn’t genuinely like or appreciate the film! I just don’t think he would publicly criticize the film or Adam Wingard right now. It’s just not how Godzilla directors have done things traditionally. We may get a more nuanced take in a few years. I’m still going to see GxK, not least because my son (9yo) is an up-and-coming G Fan and will want to go in the theater. But GvK had a lot of weak writing and performances, so I’m not holding my breath for great cinema.

Minus One should show how the human characters can be well done flushed out characters. I hope that if we get another Monsterverse Godzilla solo movie, it takes a more serious tone and the human characters are well written. But keep the bombastic action.
Like others have said. Godzilla minus one was the Godzilla movie I had long hope for. And Toho itself did it right this time. Now I can really enjoy all the other takes on My favorite hero...Godzilla. The old school Kiddie shows to the more serious tone like shin Godzilla and Minus one. I still don't care much for the 98 American version zilla. But it has its place in the Godzilla catalog. The legendary monsterverse Godzilla started out cool. But I don't know about this new slimmer lavender spikes Godzilla of this newGxkk movie. Not feeling that look at all. Hopefully Toho well keep its more serious tone Godzilla movies coming.
While i am still enjoying the monsterverse lets not completely forget how it started, that tone or meaning the first movie had, a tone which was shown to be able to return with along bonbastic action with finale, so while i enoy the more showa crazy fun, lets not forget the roots i just hope there can be found a oerfect balance, but until then, long live the king
I wouldnt expect anyone at Toho bad mouthing the Monsterverse as long as the films are made with the best intention for the character…. In addition both sides benefit from the ideas of the other... visual cues from Monsterverse are seen in Toho films.. likewise Toho cues are seen in the Monsterverse all the time
One thing thats different about minus one and monsterverse is all the characters in minus one felt like they were supposed to be there. Please explain how a conspiracy theorist, apex defector gets to go to a goverment installation into the hollow earth? Would absolutely never happen.

You do know that Toho gets a big payday for each of these movies. That may have a part in his quotes? Do not get me wrong, I love these movies and want them to do well, butlet's not get to wrapped up on what a stakeholder (person that works for Toho) has to say.
Ah yes the "fun" scapegoat, where no matter how bad it is, it's forgivable because it's "fun". Fun is the diplomatic answer to anything that's typically trash. Yeah the Showa Era was fun too, but many (not all)of those movies are bad.
The Monsterverse faces challenges that Godzilla never faced in Japan. The culture here in the US is a bit pretentious (Just look at how we view animated films for example) and coupled with Hollywoods demands that every film must crack the top 10 highest grossing films of all time every time, niche genres don't do as well. So, they face far greater scrutiny than the Japanese originals. I appreciate the Monsterverse covering ALL of Godzilla's history from the grittier Godzilla 2014 to the silly, atomic breathing a hole to the Hollow Earth, moments of Godzilla V Kong. This next movie seems to have a lot of monsters fighting. Moving us up to a Monsterverse Final Wars type situation. Esepcially considering if this movie fails at the box office it could be the final monstervere film. Though with the success of the Monarch show it may continue in another form. Who knows yet.

I hate that Minus One did this. The Movie itself was awesome, but it brought in these "Purists" who acted like they liked Godzilla their whole lives, and that Godzilla SHOULD only be serious.
Besides the fact that these are not meant to be the deepest darkest of films, Godzilla has went through countless iterations, whatever movie it is may not be your taste but if a movie is good then a movie is good.

Godzilla and Kong running together is hilarious and cringe. They look like 20 pound rabbits. Gravity went out the door, lol. And Godzilla looks super skinny when he’s running, lol.
Minus one was average at best. Weird slow skinny armed Godzilla beating up buildings. It was just ok. Oh and looked like it was filmed in a month in someone’s back yard.
The monsterverse was a serious tone with the first two movies, then they slowly got more ridiculous. This movie has been transformer vibes. Hopefully not as in your face, and unneesed humor as the transformer films though

After seeing the two trailers and where the entire second trailer highlights Kong's supremacy and prominence, it is only clear that this film is for "Team Kong." Consider yourselves winners you will see your character triumph and Godzilla, who is the one on which everything should revolve... Being humiliated, making a fool of yourself and humiliated by Shimu and Skar King... It will be the third installment of Kong... Adam Wingard destroyed Godzilla, a real shame

To be completely honest , I was not a fan of the Legendary Godzilla after 2014 film for me he looked like a fat crocodile, but after getting the movie I always wanted in Godzilla Minus One, a movie true to the Godzilla's origin, now I have learned to appreciate a different kind of Godzilla in the Monsterverse Universe. His proportions make him more agile and more powerful. Different roar , different atomic breath , different human perspective, Different theme song, why not? I love the Monster Verse, but I also love the old Godzilla movies growing up. I feel like we should all be happy that we have monster movies to watch. And also that it's not just one choice. You get to choose what you want to watch. When I was a kid you took what you got and you liked it. Because there was nothing else to choose from. So I think all the arguing and stuff about these movies is ridiculous. Enjoy what you enjoy and let others enjoy what they enjoy.

Amen! They are all fun. An unpopular opinion would be my 8 year old's who fussed in the middle of Minus 1 and said "I'm bored, where is Godzilla?" He was happy at the end but lets all remember that these are films that inspire the kid in us with awe and spectacle. Even if we want our favorite monster to have credibility as a mainstream movie, we're there for the fun. We don't have to evolve... we have Godzilla for that 🙂

Godzilla is a very versatile character. Same with King Kong who started in 1933 as an allegory for slavery, imperialism, and capitalism before Kong dies tragically. Beauty killed the beast.
While I haven’t seen every Godzilla movie yet, I understand his appeal as a character. As a kid growing up, I was very much into dinosaurs 🦖. Godzilla is this supersized dinosaur with many different designs, an atomic breath and this cool spine and roar. He’s great at selling toys these last 60-70 years.
MonsterVerse is entering their Showa Era with the fun and campy Big G stuff and I’m all for it. Not every Godzilla movie should be serious as Minus One. Same with Kong who’s movies were always more tragic at the end.
I do think MV can be all over the place with the tone of their movies. Godzilla 2014 was very serious like the 1954 movie and Minus One are. Then by KOTM and GvK, they decided to honor the 60s Godzilla. Then they went back being more dramatic with Monarch. Now back to silly and fun with GxK.

I love how positive you are but I just want to say that King Kong never was an allegory for slavery or capitalism. The original directors detailed his vision for the film several times and it's been consistent that Merian C. Cooper was inspired by his travels and journeys to the Congo and heard different stories and tales about gorillas. (which in 1933 were a somewhat newly discovered species). He then wanted said gorilla to fight a Komodo dragon and then the idea evolved into the story we know today. The themes of man's hubris as well as a scared animal lashing out against the society that chained him up, so he takes the one he loves and tries to escape to no avail.
So althought what you said about Kong wasn't the original director's vision that is an interesting way to look at the film.

Ive grown up watching every Godzilla film. Man in suit was what you got and i personally loved it as a kid. Today weve got all these awesome special effects and decent stories and action. My honest opinion is embrace it in all its forms. From start to finish. Toho's back in the day versions, to Shin, Legendary, and minus one. These are indeed the glory days for Godzilla fans and i love them all in any format. From serious characters to all out brawls!! Ive loved Godzilla from my childhood, and the same in my later years. At the end of the day I think the monstervers is trying to do a little bit of everything. 2014 is like 1954s dark tone, king of the monsters 2019 like the hesi king of the monsters it even had burning Godzilla and GvK and GxK is like Showa, if that’s case I think it’s cool.

The thing with the monster verse is like so many other franchises (fast n furious, transformers a lot of marvel etc) it could be so bad and corporate but it’s not. I'm an OG Godzilla fan who grew up watching every Toho Showa era Godzilla and Sci Fi title that had North American theatrical releases. I've watched all the Heisei and Milennium era films (some of them in theatres) and loved those too. I liked the Netflix "Monster Planet" trilogy and even though it had a complicated narrative making for a more challenging watch, "Godzilla: Singular Point"... That all being said, I'm a huge Minus One fan (because I'm a huge Takashi Yamazaki fan) and I also love Legendary's MonsterVerse cycle of films as well as their "Monarch: LOM" Apple TV series. These different iterations and interpretations can and do co-exist in the world's longest running monster franchise. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses. I can't understand why there's so much faction-ism in G-fandom nowadays. Drama, flame wars and disrespect seem to be the rule rather than the exception. Live and let live, people. it's supposed to be entertainment and fun, not arguments and divisiveness. That's it...

Godzilla Minus One was a masterpiece and by far my favourite Godzilla Movie of all time, tied with Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I’m glad that Godzilla x Kong is getting praised and it only makes me look forward to seeing this movie even more.

It's cool Yamazaki liked the film. I won't lie, as a writer myself I'm a guy who tends to gravitate towards films which are good films and stories first, and visual spectacles second. I guess that's why I prefer Minus One and films like 1954's Gojira, 1984's Return of Godzilla, and 1995's Godzilla vs Destoroyah to recent Monsterverse content, as well as a lot of the mid 60's-70's content. During that time Toho seemed to stop caring about having a story in the film at all and just threw together whatever half-assed plot could put Godzilla in the path of the other monster of the day. For me, the latter Showa period content is the hardest to watch of the original films.
For the Monsterverse, I started off loving it and having really high expectations for its future. 2014 had its problems (like Ford being a reactionary character with no charisma or capacity to serve as a leading role), but it's by far the best of the Monsterverse in terms of actually having a story to tell which supersedes the monster action in terms of its importance. The whole idea of "what if it were real" had me hooked. And I was really hoping Gareth Edwards would come back to direct again because his direction style, his sense of scale, and the results of his work and vision alongside the cinematographer from the Lord of the Rings was sublime. The only change I would've made to the core staff would be firing Max Borenstein (whose writing is still ATROCIOUS to this day) and hiring another more seasoned screenwriter to helm the next film.
Minor rant incoming: Borenstein is the reason 2014 had its problems narratively (like Ford's lack of charisma and his reactionary nature which is impossible to lead a film with). He was (and still is, as far as I'm concerned) a less-experienced and far less talented screenwriter than ANYONE who'd touched the screenplay before him. Why they brought him in for final touch ups is beyond me. I've seen the leaked original screenplay by David S Goyer, and Borenstein should NEVER have been allowed to come within a mile of this film. He and his "touch ups" absolutely made it worse than what it was before.
Mini rant over.
Skull Island was okay. My only real issue with it was the melodramatic approach they took with Samuel L's character. It was a bit too much. Other than that it was a really fun time. And it fit the aesthetic 2014 started really well. I was interested to see what would happen with Kong and whether or not Godzilla would eventually make his way to Skull Island, or if Kong would somehow get off of it or if something else would happen to the island itself to force Kong's hand, so to speak.
KOTM is where they started to lose me. What began as a grounded, "what if it were real" situation in 2014 had devolved into complete Toho 2.0 high fantasy BS complete with nostalgia grabbing bits like Rodan Ex-Machina, wasting Serizawa with a meaningless and purposeless sacrifice since it literally didn't need to happen because they had options for getting the nuke to Godzilla without anyone going into the chamber (like putting the nuke in the seat of the mini sub Serizawa took and putting it on auto pilot as but one example), and they wasted the Oxygen Destroyer and forever tarnished its legacy as the device which killed Godzilla. Thanks to Dougherty, it now has a single failure to its name which is canon since the Monsterverse is considered canon to the franchise. Thanks a lot Dougherty for tarnishing its perfect record. I'm sure Toho appreciates that as well.
But back to the story... How does a woman (Emma Russell) who loses her home, her marriage, and one of her children to the Titans end up as a fanatical supporter of them to the point she's willing to partner with eco terrorists to set them free from the containment facilities? The entire premise of the film falls apart with minor scrutiny of that detail. As I said before, if the writing sucks the film will suck no matter who the writer is. And KOTM, as a film (not necessarily an entertainment experience), absolutely sucked. Again, as a film, it sucked. It's still entertaining to watch. And Bear McCreary's musical score does wonders to turn what is otherwise a total dirt clod into at least a shiny stone (not necessarily a gem). The CGI is amazing, and I'd argue Godzilla looks his best in this film compared to either 2014 or GvK (and The New Empire based on what I've seen from the trailers). But, sadly, entertaining as the film is it still sucks. That's one of the reasons why everyone who watches the film fasts forward to the monster action and ignores everything else. That's literally proof that the film, as a film, sucks. I've never met a single Godzilla fan who fasts forward through 1954's Gojira because the entire film, even when Godzilla's offscreen, because the film is a good film first and its story is worth wading through to get to Godzilla's big moments. KOTM, unfortunately, couldn't do that. Everyone fasts forward through it because there's nothing else to experience.
Godzilla vs Kong was by far the worst of the series so far for me. I don't know how they did it. But the premise of GvK was even more nonsensical than KOTM. For instance, straight away at the beginning of the film Godzilla arbitrarily, and without any explanation given, went on a rampage against the other Titans prior to this film's events because... Why? They all bowed to him in the last one. But he's out there murdering them and hunting down Kong because he left Skull Island even though he stayed out of Godzilla's known territorial waters... Why? Why did they paint Godzilla as a villain for the first half of the film? Cause he was absolutely a villain. Not an anti-hero. A villain. As a writer, I know the difference. He was a villain. No question. He didn't turn into an anti-hero until MechaG showed up.
And why MechaG? Did anyone in the writer's room consider why humanity would ever actually want to create a mechanical Godzilla when the very notion is beyond stupid in terms of how much money, time, and manpower would be wasted building it when Godzilla's radiation alone would be enough to fry every circuit in it and turn it into a giant paper weight? You could radiation-shield the entire surface if you wanted. But that's not going to stop the atomic breath. It's literally a concentrated stream of superheated radiation. A little bit of shielding isn't gonna protect human engineering from that kind of heat or radiation. "Fantasy" genre be damned.
Anyway, on to The New Empire. Just because Yamazaki thought it was good doesn't prove it actually is "good" as a film. He had fun watching it, meaning it's going to be an entertaining experience. That doesn't mean it's going to be a good film, though. The two concepts are fundamentally different. KOTM was an entertaining experience and sucked as a film, just as GvK did. I won't be the least bit surprised if The New Empire gets ripped apart in the exact same way and for the exact same reasons as KOTM and GvK by all the critics and UA-cam reviewers, even those who are Godzilla fans like Angry Joe.
But we'll see.

Wow, this is the first review I’ve ever seen that dislikes both Goji: King of the Monsters(2019), and Goji vs Kong(2021). Your points made a lot of sense and were insanely valid. Don’t get me wrong I’m a 19 year old guy and I’m excited for the film, but I have a feeling it’s gonna get a good amount of backlash because here’s one thing the MV just can’t get right……the human plot. Goodness the human plot isn’t really that good in the MV, now with Goji (2014) and Kong: Skull Island(2017) they were solid, it’s just that ever since Goji: King of the Monsters(2019) the plot was bad and in GvK it was terrible and pointless. However, I have good faith with Goji x Kong: The New Empire because we are promised a lot of kaiju action(60 minutes in total) and just an entertaining ride. Plus, I’m ready to see Shimu, or Shimo same thing, and how she’s gonna function. I especially love her Frostbite Blast and her overall design. Maybe it’ll surprise me with the plot this time, who knows.

I think everyone just needs to calm down and enjoy that we have so many movies we can enjoy. How many times have we all sat down and watched the old-school films and wished this would come true. Every movie doesn't need to be high-concept. Truth be told, the Godzilla in Minus-1 isn't soooooooo different. He's more of an archetype and doesn't like humans. But he's a movie monster that trashes stuff. And thank goodness.

The Monsterverse is the true successor to the classic Showa / Toho films. Tbh only '54 kept a serious tone from Raids again and even '84 to Final Wars were made to be fun films with such classic lines as "That Godzilla is one tough dude" to purposely ironic deaths. Toho has redifined itself with Shiin & -1.0 Which is my all time favorite film. Those complaining these films aren't like the toho classics need to buy the criterion Showa set and the other blu ray releases I think they'll be surprised by what they watch as opposed to what they think they remember the films to be

There’s a long history of the Japanese Godzilla directors, in particular, not criticizing other directors’ G movies while they’re in theaters. It’s an acknowledgment of how challenging making a G movie is, and always has been. That’s not to say that Yamazaki-san doesn’t genuinely like or appreciate the film! I just don’t think he would publicly criticize the film or Adam Wingard right now. It’s just not how Godzilla directors have done things traditionally. We may get a more nuanced take in a few years.
I’m still going to see GxK, not least because my son (9yo) is an up-and-coming G Fan and will want to go in the theater. But GvK had a lot of weak writing and performances, so I’m not holding my breath for great cinema.

Like others have said. Godzilla minus one was the Godzilla movie I had long hope for. And Toho itself did it right this time. Now I can really enjoy all the other takes on My favorite hero...Godzilla. The old school Kiddie shows to the more serious tone like shin Godzilla and Minus one. I still don't care much for the 98 American version zilla. But it has its place in the Godzilla catalog. The legendary monsterverse Godzilla started out cool. But I don't know about this new slimmer lavender spikes Godzilla of this newGxkk movie. Not feeling that look at all. Hopefully Toho well keep its more serious tone Godzilla movies coming.

The Monsterverse faces challenges that Godzilla never faced in Japan. The culture here in the US is a bit pretentious (Just look at how we view animated films for example) and coupled with Hollywoods demands that every film must crack the top 10 highest grossing films of all time every time, niche genres don't do as well. So, they face far greater scrutiny than the Japanese originals. I appreciate the Monsterverse covering ALL of Godzilla's history from the grittier Godzilla 2014 to the silly, atomic breathing a hole to the Hollow Earth, moments of Godzilla V Kong. This next movie seems to have a lot of monsters fighting. Moving us up to a Monsterverse Final Wars type situation. Esepcially considering if this movie fails at the box office it could be the final monstervere film. Though with the success of the Monarch show it may continue in another form. Who knows yet.

Besides the fact that these are not meant to be the deepest darkest of films, Godzilla has went through countless iterations, whatever movie it is may not be your taste but if a movie is good then a movie is good.
