  • Nesebar (in Bulgarian Несебар) is a town and tourist resort in the Burgas region of Bulgaria, located about 35 km north of Burgas. It is located on a peninsula 850 m long and 350 m wide, which is reached through an isthmus. During its long existence, it lost 1/3 of its territory, being covered by the sea. Under the water, 80 meters from the shore, you can still see the remains of the fortress walls. Currently, only the western wall with the gate, which protects the city from the mainland, is preserved.
Constantly called the "Pearl of the Black Sea" and the "Dubrovnik of Bulgaria", Nessebar is a city-museum rich in history that spans over three millennia.
Nesebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe, built on the old ruins of the Thracian settlement Mesambria. It was called "Melsambria", meaning "the city of Melsa", probably the founder of the settlement, and it was given by the Greeks when they colonized the settlement in 510 BC. Then, it was called "Mesambria". The god Apollo was chosen as the patron of the city, the Greeks built a temple and a theater in his honor. In the Middle Ages, it was also known as "Mesamvria". Bronze and silver coins were minted here from the 5th century BC, and from the 3rd century BC. gold coins began to be minted. The city was conquered by the Romans in 71 BC. and maintained its privileges, including that of issuing coins. The Romanians installed a strong garrison in Mesembria, and the town became a very important settlement in the era. It started to play a bigger role again in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Around the year 680, Nessebar became an episcopal center, and in the 7th-8th centuries it became an important and powerful Byzantine port. In 812, the proto-Bulgarian inn Krum conquered the city. From the 11th century, the Slavic name of Nessebar was used instead of the name of Mesambria / Mesemvria.
The strategic position also favored the city during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The peak of its development was during the reign of Alexander I, when the city was one of the most important centers of the Bulgarian state and when new churches were built. In 1366, the city was conquered by the crusaders led by Amedee VI of Savoy, who handed it over to the Byzantines.
