We had a service truck that was a bear to get going on cold mornings. Smoked like a freight train when it did finally fire up. Holding the throttle 1/4 down helped. Think it does on most with mechanical injection. I remember when both those Volvo trucks were at the VMT
When cold starting-5 seconds crank, 5 seconds stop, 5 seconds crank, 5 seconds crank-allows heat soaking the cylinders. And if you have a mechnical injection pump-especially on the Detroit 6-71 and 8V-71, start it from the back. When you crank it, hold the governor stop lever in the stop position, then crank for about 5 seconds, keeping cranking then slowly release the stop lever while cranking and the engine magically just comes up to speed. Why-because the stop lever retards the timing when stopping.
wow no air start on a Gillig. It weird for me to see Gillig phantoms with out air starters. Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority I guess is one of the few that spec busses with airstart. But gotta love that Mighty Detroit Diesel on that Flxible and both Phantoms
Rule number one when starting old busses, always check the coolant level and oil on the engine and transmission unless you want to wreck the engine by running her with low oil or coolant. When the low oil light comes on it's too late to fix as the damage has already been done. Figure $12,000 to 16,000 for a complete inflame engine rebuild. A bus driver or truck drive would do these checks before starting every time when doing a start on a truck or bus they hadn't driven that day. You've been warned. Cheers!
I wonder if any of these people who ask such questions ever heard of the fact that direct injection engines dont use and dont have glow plugs because they naturally start easier due to the high compression values in combination with the precision of the DI AND because these engines would tend to misfire badly if glow plugs would be used?
Smaller direct injection diesel engines (passenger car) have glow plugs, only the larger commercial vehicle engines don't. Sometimes those have a grid heater. No diesel tends to misfire due to glow plugs...
Some real nice buses there! So, if I put a Volvo badge on my tractor, it will start as easily as yours there? LOL. Catagory: Pets and Animals? Say what?
Good job saying the name of the buses some years, transits and the companies for the buses cold start.
That Cummins L10 barely had any battery but it still fired right off. Gotta love an engine like that.
only a guy like this can make starting up a bus interesting
that 58 gmc is a sore thumb i love em
I love the video

The Flxible...Yes!
Yeah... That's the famous sound of the Detroit 71 series
The Swedes know how to make cold starting diesels.
Ted Logan that engine is either a Cummins cat or a Detroit
Those volvo guys start underwater if you want(to sound like rattle and smoke like chinese people at a funeral, but they start anyway)
The bus with the strongest Batteries Wins.
😁🤗🤗🤗😎
Sorry to hear about the fire, hope y'all get back on your feet soon!
Cant believe they let that 58 GMC sit out!!

The Flxible is a Detroit 6, or Detroit 8v71
U r the diesel ducy guy😄

I own a 1970s buffalo such a cool bus
Wow Wow Wow Awesome ‼️
Why leave the other running so we cant hear the others run
Buses need a lot more time to warm up than some other vehicles
You should only have 1 bus running at any time so we can hear pure sound.
7367Network I see u everywhere even on tornado siren vids
do you happen to have any Crown buses at the Commonwealth coach and Trolley Museum
dude love those check out my channel if you want to see some awsome crowns
Josh nice sentry 40v2t pic
Diesel Ducey!!!! where ya been????
Why are all the cold starts filmed from the rear of the bus
That is the location of the engine on most buses
Diesel ducey?
would a jump on the ones that did not start do it ?
mccrackenphillip it will help with cranking but a diesel needs a hot combustion chamber to run
Also thick oil doesn't help any
I wonder if any of these people trying to start cold diesels have ever heard of letting the, "Glow Plugs" warm up?

The older 2 stroke diesels didn't use them.
Mickey Chalfan a lot of older buses have Detroit diesels in them which where 2 cycle they don't have glow plugs

@@pearlyhumbucker9065 You're joking right
All small duty diesels use glow plugs to start. Maybe heavy vehicles not so much, more so screen heater
how many! km on 1997!
WD-40 works as good as starting fluid and is way easier on the motor.
Jimmy the Krazy Klown Kar Klown videos its mostly kerosene, that’s why.

Anything that starts when it’s that cold is 1/2 way descent
They sure as hell don't make 'em like they use to......
that flexible bus has to have a cat motor in it
I think that's a Detroit Diesel
It's a Detroit...
For more videos on busses check out fax bus channel!
is the mic funny it cuts from one earphone to both to one again
Treat it to a little Lucas Synthetic in oil and fuel
