As Everesting is an endurance event, I think comfort on the bike would be important. If you had not chopped your stem and you had one or two spacers above your stem, I would consider raising my stem so as to reduce the strain and pressure on my back. Even consider 28mm tyres, lower pressure, more grip, more comfort, less fatigue. Perhaps thicker bar tape.
Congratulations Ollie! A whole episode of GCN Tech without mentioning you’ve done an hour record attempt! Next week, no mention of an Everesting or your lockdown hair?
His quote could be a shirt--Having Done One. Ollie is our George Plimpton, sneaking into the huddle and pretending to be the real thing. Now he just needs to write a book about himself. And then give it away as the ultimate book.
Yes I’ve done one. Heart rate monitor when Everesting, I found more important than a power meter as it was key to keep within my limits. Took me 18 hours and 90 reps of The Daneway near Cirencester...
That Battaglin is so beautiful. About 4000 euro for the frame i read somewhere. Not to bad since it is a bespoke fit and custom paint included. The Battaglin will be a "normal" production bike next year. Keep up the good work.
Yeah SRAM, like when You got lost on bike trip in the mountains, just spin the crank, creaking noise from it will call the emergency unit not from Your current residence, but also from abroad
Re: brakes, nobody ever seems to mention disc at the front and rim at the back. It's what I run on my weight-weenie bike to save a few grams but still get the benefit of actually being able to stop.
About shimano rear deraliors. There are 2 sizes avalible at 105 and ultegra the ss cage 25-30 and the gs this can handle up to 34t like the shorter grx deralior.
My run of the mill Shimano 105 with long cage works just fine with an 11-34 cassette. It came that way with my 2018 Canyon Grail AL 7.0 (the 2019 version had the 105 swapped out for GRX)
Thanks for voting my bike in Manon. Even cooler that you're also a car person. Softrides work with a beam and it's carbon with high density foam so it loads up and you get no leg or back road shock since you're on a fulcrum. My next upgrade is a BLACK ultegra crank with carbon chain rings that I lined up with somewhere in the UK. Cheers on the mullet Ollie, eh!
I 'd expect the saddle on the Softride bike to get nearly level once a tall rider sits on it. The carbon beam/"toptube" will bend considerably wouldn't you think? To bad of the horrendous chimney though. I'd clean up the road and put tubeless Schwalbe Pro One TT tyres on the lightest wheels I could get.
What are the odds, as of yesterday I contacted the official Everesting.cc coach and I am signing up with him (hopefully). Want to do it in a year (from 0 cardio base, new to road cycling, 130lb 23yo male) and since the budget is tight I will only be doing the coaching for 4 months. I Will also be doing it on what I have, a used 2007 Trek Madone 5.2, and a computrainer (Since roads around me are flat). Didn't even think about gearing or any of that, haven't even gotten a bike fit yet, they're so expensive! Will definitely have to save my pennies for the most cost-efficient upgrades since they all add up pretty quick.
@@SLOPPEWALL only 40 for 2020. Next year it is a "normal" production bike. The frame with the cockpit and seatpost will be 4000 euro. But that is included bespoke fit for each customer and custom paint.
Hey! The inside of the for has been custom painted to match the chainring, and it's been inspired by the guitar fretboard. It's my friend's bike, and I took the photos, so stoked to see this here :D
Mullet, aka hockey hair (Canada), aka Mississippi mudflap... the lockdown is bringing it back. Not sure how aero it's going to be until you can gather it into a ponytail though.
So I came here for bike tech and now I have to ponder two big philosophical questions: How is Ollie actually making a mullet sort of cool and how could a yellow bike with a Softride seatpost get a super nice despite its towering chimney? Ollie and Manon are making me think so hard it hurts.
My gravel bike had a 32T with a 105 rear mech. Compact at the front. That's as it came from the manufacturer. I added MTB wheels later (freehubs area different width), requiring one of those funny MTB cassettes which only start at 34T. A hanger extender allowed this to work. A hnager extender is enough. Although I had a long cage 105 to start with. It would do more than 34T now, I'm sure. Works flawlessly. I wouldn't Everest on a gravel bike.
Hi Dr Ollie. JC you aren't but you'll get there LOL. Start with the mullet! How about a short clip on quick links. What's available, what are the pros and cons, how long do they last and whatever else you can think of. There's a dearth of info out there that needs tying together. I watched JC's clip on waxing the chain and want to make it a regular event but if a quick link is once only then its an expensive compulsion to get into.
Everesting, it does not matter how long the ride takes, but it must be ridden in one attempt (i.e. no sleeping in between). Breaks for meals etc. are fine. You can break for as long or as little as you like. Bear in mind break times add up quickly, and can add significantly to your elapsed time. (Hells 500 rules of Everesting)
That black Dolan ... how many times did you have to spin the rear wheel to get the valve stem a 6:00 and the crank at 3:00? That's attention to detail.
I heard an openning on the Tiger King channel is openning up for anyone with a haircut that fits the mould,...mmm.. if only I knew someone with said haircut🤔
Everesting question for Ollie (since I have heard you've done one, lol)... Did you start out in a more difficult gear then shift to the 32 or 34 or start out in the easiest gear?
Snack of the week is more like snack of the month. So rare to see this pop up. Perhaps get someone to scour the local supermarket and get snack of the week feature actually every week, instead of just waiting for handouts? Also, I would like to send in my favorite snack, but don't know what GCN address is. Can I submit a photo instead?
It is easy to find their street address in Bath, not sure where I found it but it didn't take long. And awhile back, I sent in a couple of packs of Twizzlers after Marty was wondering about them when one of the Dirty Kanza top-finishers credited a Twizzler with getting him through the final miles.
So went for a 100km ride today... things started well however one of our group took a nasty spill, jacking up his elbow pretty bad. Lacking a proper first aid kit we improvised using several spare tubes to fashion a sling to immobilize until the ambulance arrived. Got me thinking if you guys have ever covered any first aid for the road?
I disagree on your rim brake advice when riding on a wet downhill decent because I know how to adjust the rim brake and make it brake nearly as possible as the disc brake with the rim wheels. The carbon fiber rims would be terrible in the wet while the alloy wheels would be better. If you want the best brake pads than I would suggest the Koolstop Duro-Type Duo Compound brake pads. I have used these pads on my old mountain bike and they do work great but when it snows than you have to give it a little time but it will work properly. When it rains or not, these brake pads are great for the alloy wheels. Cheers!
Nothing. Rode a 34-28 for my Everest on a 360m long 11.8% hill. Never changed gears, as no point when descending. No PM or HRM - just went on feel which resulted in consistent times for 233 laps for 13 hours 20 mins of riding. Home in time for dinner. Happy days!
Ahhh the pasta at 11:43... I won a bag of that same stuff like 5 years ago and then and then held on to it for sentimental value. Unfortunately i just threw it in the bin this spring as I believe the expiration date was 2018 sadly...
I have never had a problem pulling my brake levers, sorry. All of these make believe problems with rim brakes all of a sudden. They seemed to work fine for about 100 years.
hello, your friendly MTB neighborino here. i want to ask is shimano offers semi metallic brake pads for their road bike disc brakes? thanks and cheers!

One of my bikes has Tiagra 4700 10 speed with an Ultegra RX long cage rear mech and I run an 11-36 cassete no problem. So on an eleven speed bike you can easily run and 11-34 with a long cage rear mech no GRX required, I don't think Shimano makes an 11-36 11 speed.

Any ideas on how the rear cassette can be controlled from the left paddle or center mounted handlebar option. Thanks
#gcntech I have a question I think only you guys have the vast knowledge to... I currently have the Look aerilight 795 with the look ZED 3 crankset. I was curious what other frameset uses the same bb-65 mm bottom bracketas the look aerolite so I can transfer my components including the crankset to another frame??
What would you change about your bike if you were going to try to complete an Everesting?
Helium balloon mounts.
E-Bike
The person riding it
Take it out of Holland

Ollie and Mannon have great chemistry. More of them together.
And both of them back on set, with maybe a socially-distancing divider between them so Manon doesn't have to actually see that mullet.
Oh my word... why is Asiya's bike not in the bike vault! That is legendary... don't bother with the second bike in the upgrades for the week...

My thinking Ollie should keep his hair like that. Until someone asks "How long has Peter Stringfellow worked for GCN?"

Hey Manon, I'm your BIGGEST fan!

About shimano rear deraliors. There are 2 sizes avalible at 105 and ultegra the ss cage 25-30 and the gs this can handle up to 34t like the shorter grx deralior.
That Dolan was black, two-wheeled hotness. It should have gotten a super super nice.
AGREE!!
The most important tech? Food and water. The lack of proper planning for that will end your everest attempt faster than anything.

does the beam flex down? is that what’s with the seat angle?

reckon mullets are going to be big this year ! we've all got them !
If we wanted one or not haha
Everesting tech - cannondale supersix evo, sram red ten speed, tubulars wheels, compact gears
Battaglin were not the first to do fully integrated cables on a steel bike, English Cycles were.
That soft ride has a chimney as you can’t cut the ec90 steerer because the expander inside is actually bonded in during manufacture.
30 seconds in and agree completely with Manon! Bring back the knit Covid Cap! :-)
Great video yet again GCN(I bet you're tired of the flattery)!
awesome MULLET BUILD, Ollie! ^_^
you don't need a grx rear mech for 34t, just get the medium cage...
even 36 :-) (Sram of Sunrace makes one)
Sram 1X clears a 46.
34 works fine with my medium cage current model ultegra mech.
Oh Manon,, don’t be embarrassed! I think Ollie’s new dew is quite cool.
Best tech for my Everesting, aero fruit bread with peanut butter 😋

Everesting isnt limited to 24hrs as you folks say - you just cant sleep (exceptions if doing multiple everesting)
you can fit a 34 on a ultegra GS cage, I think a 36 sram cassette will fit as well.
Steel bikes are stunning especially when they have the lugging customised
They are only producing 40 units so I'm sure you are going to need a bucket load of cash.
Lugging? Never heard that before. I'm using that from now on.
