    These interviews are what makes UA-cam great. There is so much information within this video and seeing two guys who are at this level having a conversation like this is something you rarely get exposed to especially once you leave college and spend most of your time in your own studio.

    Concerning the "stems through a compressor" problem, I've met an engineer who mixes on an ssl duality where you have 3 mixbusses at your disposal, and to keep his buss compression the same, he just sends a copy of his mix to a different mixbuss that is not routed to the stereo out, but to the sidechain of his master buss comp, which is compressing the stem he is printing the same way it would compress the master buss, and I found it very interesting, as this is a technique that can be easily applied to an in the box mixing setup, to achieve a better coherence between the stems and the actual mix. It reminded me to share this with you guys! Sorry if I made mistakes, I am French (yes we make sound too!)

    I would COMPLETELY be worth taking the section where he talks about "starting over in another job is the same as starting over in my field. It was a hardship, but an investment for the future..." And just pull that out and have it as its own video. And then like run certain bits on loop 5 times over whenever he talks about paying dues and learning his craft. Thats a lesson that is timeless, career non-specific, and important for anyone. What a great interview. This guy was worth more than the hour we got. Better than good stuff, it was (as MasterCard is fond of saying) PRICELESS!

    So interesting to watch these interviews between mixing engineers! Making Music can be so different from mixer to mixer, but the magic about it is that in the end there is no just one right way to make good music...
    Warren is really an inspiring mixer and makes so good videos and shares so much with this youtube community, thats amazing.

    He's mixing on a laptop at home. When he said he takes artists down to the studio and let them listen to it through his system I smiled a bit. It takes talent and knowledge no doubt to mix on a laptop with plug-ins. It also gives the opportunity to send stems off globally for processing like Brian Adams did with his latest album. Songwriting is also done at home like Lennon and McCartney used to meet in Paul's home in afternoon hours to make songs and Paul says they made one new song every time.

    • @Producelikeapro

    Fantastic interview, Warren. I hope you have another with Ken soon - he reminds me of a neighbor, who's not a music person, but is passionate and articulate about what he does (he builds homes). I'd love to have a close peek at ken's set up. I loved the surgical stuff, especially de-essing via clip gain - I've used it the same way and was blown away to learn I'm not alone. I would love to hear more about the Ozzie/David Gilmore trick you both discussed around the 40 minute mark. Again, thanks so much for giving us such a wonderful Christmas gift. Merry Christmas!

    Great interview! I listened to the bit at 8:15 about clocking a couple of times to really understand what he was saying. I usually mix going through a couple pieces of outboard on the master bus and then print back in. His thoughts on clocking really gives me something to think about, and do some A/B tests! Another great video Warren, thanks again!

    14:54 I found a workaround for the problem you mentioned while printing stems,
    lets say I have a guitar & piano going into the Mix buss,what I did is I soloed the guitar track, and recorded/resample the Master (Pre-FX) Channel ***.
    By soloing that specific track, all the other muted tracks are still running into the mix bus, but I only hear the soloed track on the master which gets printed. Ofcourse this is a tedious process for each individual track. But if you're on Ableton, there is Clyphx MIDI Remote Script which can make this whole process 1 click away.
    For Ableton & Clyphx readers, here's the Action List,
    [Export Stems] in Master; insub Pre FX; out Ext. Out; Arm on; B2A;
    *** : Make sure the track on which you are printing/resampling the stems on is not routed to the Master else it will create a feedback which is DANGEROUS.

    what a great, in-depth honest discussion. Very insightful and gives prospective to a lot of us who are looking for direction. Right now i am at a point of exploration, where i wish to do best with what i have. But since ITB is so much favoured in your discussion, that makes me happy, relieved. Was leaning towards getting hardware summing bus etc lately. But would like to explore plugins if they can give me what i am looking for. Your discussion reassures the same. Have to try that out now. Again thanks Warren and Ken for a frank, honest, interesting, insightful discussion.

    I loved this episode so much, I felt a little guilty. Like I was listening in on an important conversation only elite people should be included in. Absolutely love the organic (yuck.. hate that word) conversation and quick look at his mix setup. One of the best episodes yet! Thanks again for the awesome info! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

      Hi +PJSGBC Thanks for the great comment. I am NOT in the Elite! Haha. Trust me I've had to work extremely hard, I don't have any relatives in the business haha and my first engineering gig was not on a huge album! I respect a guy like Ken who has been involved in many incredible albums and is in the trenches making music! Guys like Ken are an inspiration to us all!! I wish you an amazing 2016 and I really appreciate all of your fantastic support!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! yea theres never been a better time to be a musician. although its extremely competitive. but it is very possible for almost anybody if they take the time to learn every fine detail to creation.

    This is such a rich video - thanks for leaving so much detail in. Around 4 mins in you're discussing a pop mix that was an L2-squashed brick, with the verses gain-reduced by 1dB and the chorus boosted by 2... My (prosumer) assumption was, I shouldn't send over-flattened audio to a mastering engineer... so is that a rule you can break if your brickwalled mix sounds awesome?

    Greetings, this is another amazing video! I'm so glad I found it today; because I was just having a debate with another engineer about staying in the box once it goes in. He said I needed a clock, summing box, and ad da converters!!! I was like why? My mix and masters sound good now. Why do I need to bring the mix out of the box?

    Guys like Ken and also Andrew Scheps legitimise ITB which has always been the poorer cousin to analogue OTB.

    I like printing Wet & Dry versions of my stems. The wet stems sound like the final main mix, and the dry stems lets me manipulate those tracks later for remixing and weird fun stuff. Fun interview.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому +1

      Hi +TimeMarchesOnBand Great stuff! You could print the effects onto their own stereo stem and have a dry stem, that will allow mix recalls to be very easy indeed! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    • @TimeMarchesOn
      @TimeMarchesOn 8 років тому +2

      Just to add a bit, The dry stems come in handy for band practice after a hiatus when every one has forgotten some of the song parts it very hard to hear a guitar part dripping with reverb and delays. But we bring a laptop with the dry stems to rehearsal and solo the parts and let everyone re-learn his or her parts.
