2:57 THIS ACTRESS WAS IN HUNDREDS OF TV SHOWS. Character actress. I think she was in COLUMBO and GUNSMOKE Tv shows as well. She worked a lot. Mostly as a Blond. Then grey as she got older. She aged gracefully. Good actress.
Virginia Gregg's performance is so excellent. I love the long pauses after she is found out, the real tears and the beautiful way she conveys her dilemma and remorse. Truly heartbreaking. Very nice work.
My Mother had two children out " wedlock " ; a boy in 1946 that she was made to give up for adoption , I was born In 1951 same father , they married in 1956 ; she kept me . Highly recommend 'The Best Years of Our Lives' about post WW2 readjustment to civilian life. Dana Andrews' character deals with similar situation upon his return. Great movie, especially if you like Theresa Wright.
"The best years of our lives". Really a GREAT old Movie of a time long past when The United States of America was the greatest country ever. I dont know what happend or when but I suspect it just slowly slipped away. Best years of our lives is an honest masterpiece. It is available on Blu-Ray now and it is worth every penny.
@@johndonahue3162 and don't just go to another clown to get those big tears painted on your face . electroshock therapy will be best for you , funnier too ....can't wait to see that next time you're in town with the circus .
I wish I could find eye glasses like that now I like them, I figure she was the mother cause a lot of women did that back then, messed around while the men were at war and got pregnant and the men did just the opposite they got women pregnant when they were in service.
Weird camera angles in this one. I wonder what they were thinking of. Plot kind of predictable, though I thought we might have a 'Man in the Grey Flannel Suit' moment where the husband says that he didn't let his wife join him because he had a local girl on the side... Maybe that's what he meant by 'I've made my share' of mistakes.
I just watched that movie again 2 days ago and don't remember that exchange about GP's wife joining him. His brief affair took place during WW2 in Italy so don't see how his wife could have joined him...?
Officer Betty : Good morning Joe. Sgt. Friday: Good morning Betty. Officer Betty: Here is a teletype from Tucson about the woman you're looking for. Hey Joe, how about coming over to my place tonight and I'll make you dinner. If you get lucky I'll also make you breakfast. Sgt Friday: Just the FAX Betty.......just the FAX.
@joseph crosby mecham no sir , I can't and she's certainly my favorite guest on this series . Mary Eleanor Donahue, credited as Elinor Donahue, is an American actress, best remembered today for playing the role of Betty Anderson, the eldest child of Jim and Margaret Anderson on the 1950s American sitcom Father Knows Best . and who's "the Cartwright girl " ?
OK this one made me cry. What ya think the man would have done if the police men weren't there might have been a little different they might of had to come back lol thanks for posting
Ah ..if these were 'true cases'....I am confused. So she was admitted to the hospital under a different name, apparently with no prenatal care otherwise her doctor would have been involved and knew she was going to have a baby.. Then...who paid for the hospital? And nothing about a birth certificate.... Way too many holes in the story.
Baby was born in Tucson where Mrs. Lewis got on the bus. Do you suppose the birth certificate was there? Mrs. Lewis had an affair while her husband was in Korea, got pregnant, had the baby in Tucson, came back to LA, and gave it away because her husband was coming back. Short and simple. Holes filled.
She probably was able to pay for her hospital care herself. This was waaaay before hospitals gouged everyone so much. Two or three dollars for a single aspirin nowadays!
Captain Lewis: Hey guys, I got a letter from my wife back home in the world.. Pvt Jones: What does she say sir? Captain Lewis: She says honey you're not going to believe this but I opened the front door this morning and there on the stoop was a baby in a basket. Pvt Jones: Wow sir. Captain Lewis: I believe it.......I believe it. Why does she say I wouldn't believe it? Pvt Jones: Captain have you ever considered investing in this new thing called " Time Share " vacation property?
Not by a long shot. This episode was done in 1952, a year before Watson and Crick discovered the structure of dna, and it took decades after that before dna could be used to establish identity or maternity/paternity.
HLA testing was developed in the 1960s, DNA testing for paternity was discovered by Dr. Alec Jeffreys of Leicester University in 1984 which then led to all the other modern DNA Profiling Tests.
Typical. Man is serving his country and the woman is fooling around behind his back. She cries a lot and he gets saddled with raising a kid who isn't his own. How do you think this turned out?
This may be the best Dragnet episode ever. A beautiful story with an excellent performance by Virginia Gregg, a native of Illinois.
I must say I’d ol Virginia was not acting as a crappy old sow, never
A story about unconditional love and forgiveness.
We desperately need that in our present society.
What a MAGNIFICENT program. Especially for the 50's!
Virginia Gregg deserved every accolade there is.
AND... Joe Friday was the best cop ever.

watched this show for decades, this is the first to make me cry, aw jeez...
Smultz pure Smultz but pretty racy for 1953
I think this is Virginia Gregg's best performance.
Another great performance of Virginia Gregg is in Perry Mason's The Case of the Cautious Coquette. She is quite attractive in it.
Virginia Gregg's performance is so excellent. I love the long pauses after she is found out, the real tears and the beautiful way she conveys her dilemma and remorse. Truly heartbreaking. Very nice work.
22:40, the husband has a forgiving spirit!
I'm crushed. Gritty. This was classic Noire !

@@johndonahue3162 You know...I wouldn't doubt Hollywood would do anything anymore.
Virginia Gregg pulling off being "29 or 30" at 42 in 1953 at 42 is pretty good.
This was a risque story for the early 50' TV audience.
i believe it is her baby!!!!!!!
such a lovely heartrending story..

Aww, this one made me tear up at the end.
Funny, Dorothy Miller was the name of a policewoman on the '60s version of Dragnet.
Man oh man, that was a real tear jerker.
ah yes, sweet LA Noire vibes coming from this one
Great Director of Photography on this one . Nicely angled shots. And the framing of the stars behind the Photo Booth curtain is brilliant!
@10:52 the bus driver looks like he could be real life brother of the actor that plays Joe's police partner.
Love it, Love it, Love it!!
Pretty racy for the early '50's. Man she was with Webb for along time.
Huh?
Ben Alexander (Frank Smith) said that they read their lines from teleprompters because they did so many episodes; check out the actors eyes!
Bens expression at the end, like "well ok... didn't expect that"
The best ending to a TV show ever!
