  • Carp Fishing Rigs... a load of old b******s! Carp pro, Ian Chillcott has his say | Carp Fishing 2020
"If there are a thousand things which are important to me in carp fishing, then rigs come around number 937 on that list; there is simply too much crap talked about them," boldly states carp fishing legend, Ian 'Chilly' Chillcott. "I have only ever found one style of fishing Hair Rigs, and that came from Lenny Middleton in 1980. Everything ‘invented’ since, is just an adaptation of the original. It was the rig that I would use, and I am sure, very effectively too."
In this video, Chilly goes into depth about the fundamentals of a carp rig and why you shouldn't be led by fashions, as he wonderfully sums up... "There is no denying that the mechanics of the Hair Rig should never have to be as complicated as some would have you believe."

20 years ago I caught all my fish using a line aligner made with Kryston Merlin braid. I never had any issues. Bottom baits and pop ups. Same rig pretty much. These days I use almost the same rig, just with coated braid or sometimes with mono. Still catch.

I've started using the ronnie/spinner rig not because it's a trend, because it cuts down the cost of buying never ending hooklink material which ain't cheap, all i need change is the hook. For me its all about saving the pennies and still catching fish. 90% of carp fishing is watercraft and rest is bait application and rigs and i believe a well placed ronnie will catch more than a well placed basic rig.

My mate said I'm going to go small with little hooks as he had been reading g mags to go small and light in winter.
I had a 21lb 7oz common out on my rig and mate had nothing out all day.
    I had 2 out on the 21mm pellets .
Goes to show, if everyone is doing the same thing I'll do the opposite.
    Happy fishing mate.

I think it’s all down to individual confidence. You find a bait and rig that you get results with and you take it every where. I’ve done it myself and then gone on to try other baits and rigs but in my head I’ve never been able to relax so revert back to the tried and tested methods .
This summer I fished a very weedy shallow park lake that had the green candy floss weed in abundance as well as drifting weed beds and some flow due to it being stream fed . I decided to fish long running chods ( thank you Jim Shelley ) I’d fished chods before but never caught on them or had faith as I preferred the hinge .
Long story short I caught a lot of fish and shocked myself ... the weed was so bad I never saw another angler ... and it’s a free to fish lake 🥳🥳🥳
Horses for courses I believe 👍🏻😊🌞

Dacron has been used by lots of anglers without them even realising. Most sinking braided reel lines are literally Dacron, regardless of what marketing spiel is put on it by the manufacturers. Same with the braided leader material such as ArmaKord or Nash ArmourBrajd - both are Dacron in the majority with a couple of threads of different materials for some reason or another.

I'm new to Carp fishing (this year) and it's so confusing all the different rigs to use and hookbaits etc. Still yet to catch a carp, blanked a handful of times now...used hair rigs, Ronnie rigs, zigs and chod rigs but still nothing. I think I'm over complicating things and not been patient enough with the rig I put out before changing. I think what Ian says about it matters more where the carp are is so true. I need to learn more about that side of fishing I think.

I use the iq d-rig and I've always caught on it so like ian says keep it simple and use what works for you.

He talks a lot of sense - super sharp hooks and a rig that doesn’t tangle, a good bait and a the right location. I’ve always preferred baits fished on the bottom of the lake, for me, they out-fish pop-ups every time.

Chilly is cooler than even his name suggests :-) and I agree with what he says... But there's a nagging part of me that screams: Imagine if every carp angler in the world just used a line-aligned hair rig? Besides the fact that this would bankrupt a fair number of tackle companies, it would be dead boring!

Too many trying to over complicate things to outwit something that swims around thinking of one of two things - reproduction & eating!!! All this to try to ‘trip up’ something the swims around & will eat it’s own shit!!! Pigs with fins.

I've fished many lakes, the silent pva mesh or stringer approach has always worked for me. Location Location Location.
