This whole album is a soulmate connection that gets ripped away from you because it's the shins and they know that every thing is fleeting. It's beautifully heartbreaking 💕
Well put !
The guitar work on this song is beyond next level.
Wouldn't say next level. "B/c#/Dm/f" if I'm hearing it right. Sure I could've miss a chord or two but nothing that's gonna change music here. Just a great simple song!
@@factsnotfeelings4901 the feels, man. Good music is not quantifiable. It's the feels.
Once upon a time, I went cd shopping where I came across "Chutes too Narrow". Without having any idea of who the Shins were, I decided to buy the album because I liked the art work. Best decision ever! It still remains one of my favorite albums of all time, almost 6 years later.
This is such an amazing song. And you're awesome if you're reading this or listening to this song! :-)
+Vivek Verma hey thanks Vivek :)
💜💜💜💜💜💜
Muah! 😘
You're priviledged* if you're listening to this song!
@@amirdada5700 Man thanks for reminding me of this song.
I'm 87 years old and no one in my senior center listens to The Shins!
Disgraceful bunch of chrome dome geezers...
Well, except Ms. Cindy down the hall, she's a real looker... and a sweetheart to boot.
Ryuhza that’s good to hear
are you still alive?
buffalo bill dude-
buffalo bill I hope so
I bet none of this is true.
You have no idea how long I spent finding this song.
I can understand. Same with me
Called to see if your back was still aligned
And your sheets were growing grass out of the corners of your bed
But you've got too much to wear on your sleeves
That has too much to do with me
And secretly I want to bury in the yard
The grey remains of a friendship scarred
You told us of your new life there
You've got someone coming 'round
Gluing tinsel to your crown
He's got you talking pretty loud
Berate, remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes
You say you're still in love
And it's true what can be done
It's hard to leave all these moments behind
Called to see if your back is still aligned
And your sheets are growing grass out of the corners of your bed
And you've got too much to wear on your sleeves
It's too much to do with me
And secretly I want to bury in the yard
The grey remains of a friendship scarred
You tested your medal of doe's skin and petals
Kissing the lipless and bleed all the sweetness away
A bah buh yoooou got too much to wear on your sleeves
Chutes Too Narrow is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the world.
LEGIT
It’s one of the greatest albums of all time...
SAME
Damn straight. My favourite album of that decade, and there was a lot of strong competition.
The Shins*
Such an awesome band. Beautiful, talented, with intelligent lyrics. They mean a great deal to me and always have
The Shins. One of the best bands of the 2000s. Such a great song. One that truly takes me back.
Saw them in Wellington, NZ at the local university. Best gig of my life! My favourite band!
It shouldn't work for a band to have only one constant member. But Mercer is just that consistently good. He is what the essence of The Shins is.
I love this album so much. Same with Oh, Inverted World and Wincing the Night Away. Port of Morrow is good, but I really wish that 75% of the band's crew hadn't departed. The other half of the band is what made the other three albums truly great.
Yep. Very, very, very true.
My nephew is going away to college, gave him this album as a sendoff into that world.
It's crazy how I found this song through iTunes when my parents got a brand new HP computer when I was like 10. I never had a computer before that and when I clicked on iTunes it showed songs that the creators already put in there for the users to listen to. I clicked on this song and I immediately loved the song, listened to it over 100 times before discovering youtube, now I'm a huge fan of this band.
hardcorelifeforus000 That is how I found this song as well... but just as you...this song hit me like a ton of bricks, and the lyrics, the passionate vocals...when I sing with it, it channels something spiritual in my soul...hard to put into words, but I feel a sense of relief, contentment...sort of like I have screamed to the world the pain in my heart over all my broken relationships..it puts my head in a different place..so I listen to it on my way to work...LOL..but the guys who put it all together are geniuses...
LimitlessCXIVI my dad used to play this song every day when he would cook me and my brother dinner. This song always brings me back.
It’s funny how we discover our favorite bands through sheer coincidence.
I found this song on some windows music program lol..
Fell in love with them after
Yes i love the way the guitar and vocals explode out, The song really changes your mood.
This is my favorite song that’s ever existed ❤️
On the off chance you actually still listen to this song... I miss you more than anything, Catherine. I'd do anything to experience talking to you for the first time again. I don't think we'll ever be close again. But I feel like a kid in love when I think of you. Its 6am and my only wish is to talk to you, but I can't. So I'll listen to this song, and hope tomorrow will be a better day. But I'll never stop thinking about you
Shins are Pure Magic!!! Amazingly Good!!! YES!!! May God Bless y'all Richly and Jesus Peace!!! 🎉😂❤😮
Great band, broad range, lyrics, guitar, video too. Go Shins
i am so addicted to this band
Keep posting the Shins. The best band ever.
Remember being blown away when The Shins did the (IIRC) Late Show's busking challenge on the BBC the other year before their Man Academy gig that evening. Great band and stopped for a lovely chat on the Manchester Uni Union for a while after even though everyone was baltic! They were amazing on stage later too!
Blessed with more light and shade than a lot of US bands today(similar range to Scots bands like Delgados or Mogwai in this respect)- a rare thing to find a better band anywhere today.
20 years ago when I was 16 my girlfriend made me a copy of this CD. I’ve been hooked on this band ever since. Chutes Too Narrow is one of my favorite albums possibly of all time at least in the indie rock world.
You are a dying breed young grasshopper. Keep listening to The Shins and be very wary of 90% of everything that's on the radio. Truly good music will change your life and make you a happier person.
I miss the shins, the broken bells are ok but nothing and I mean NOTHING can beat this, I will never stop listening to them.
There’s so many great things about this song, but the bass is severely underrated
OMG I remember when this song came out I was a sophomore in highschool and my lovely hipster boyfriend Curt at the time was a huge Shins fan and played this song all the time. 💖
Such a great freaking song!
Power through elegant ecstasy. Slow build to some awesome riffs and the smoothest big sound in modern music.
You tested your mettle of doeskin and petals, of kissing the lipless who bleed all the sweetness away ..................
how about this: I'm 27, a man of color (more or less), whose friends all listen to underground hip-hop. They don't understand - believable, or still cliche?
Daniel Didit same here
Believable
I love underground hip hop!
Who cares about how old anyone is. Let's just be happy that whoever is watching this video has a good taste in music.
i love this song and them, this needs more views wtf they are amazing
Just a short story: I ones literally dreamt to this song..
It was a dream were I encountered a friend from my teens and her boyfriend arguing with each other.. they were talking with the voices of the song confessing their love to eachother in "arguing” manner. I woke up to it playing on my radio alarm hearing the song for the first time. It still is one of my all time favorites and it was a very beautiful dream.
This is a great opening song, period. Sleeping Lessons is fine and all, but it can't even touch this. Just like no ending song of theirs can touch Past and the Pending.
Who knew a late night-o-workypoos @ Starbucks would lead to listening to think a handful-o-moments!!
I miss the past and pending.
Mmmm.... I am in love with the Shins. and that's the Lloyd Center! Ah, I do love Portland bands. make me feel closer to home =)
The Shins changed my life
@0811sky This is exactly what I've been thinking with my friends. It's really great to see that other people of my age appreciate bands like The Shins.
B.O.O.O.B.S.
The shins are just one of the most important bands of the past ten years in the US(as seen from the UK anyway)and this, again, sees them on top form. Maybe Modest Mouse or GBV are AS important for us lot looking in but nobody surpasses The Shins for sheer songwriting nous and passion. I've not cared so much since, IDK, Pixies in their prime or Dinosaur Jr-that's the kind of company The Shins should be mentioned in anyway.
Great, great lyrics too-which is so rare today. I miss Pavement too.
So it turns out that Daniel Farraday is indeed a musician in the alternative universe as he always wished to be. That's nice to know.
💙
Cool vid i love this song.

BOY I LOVE YOU

MY GOOD GOD
Wo
Ikr, he's like a poet! I wanna write lyrics like him. =D
Geez man
Great title...
I have a pet theory that "Chutes Too Narrow" and "Wincing the Night Away" are about the exact same relationship/breakup, but with Chutes being how things look and feel with emotions still running hot, while WTNA is a retrospective after things have cooled down and the writer has a matured outlook.
Does that just sound crazy and that I'm shoehorning things in? Try listening to them back-to-back with my idea in mind and there are some uncanny "fits" in my estimation.
This shall be my transition theme.
Natalie Portman's favorite Shins song.

@alecjmejia True story.
I didn't know Kevin Spacey had a band. That is soooo cool!
the title of this song is SO ironic...
that skater was off rhythm.
He has a Joy Division guitar.
Nearly 1,000,000 views
Worked at that rink for years. Mathew, the skater, skated like that almost every day to whatever music was playing. He had that energy every day. Somersaults, push-ups, the tip-toe strut. I think they just saw him going at it one day and decided he needs to be in a video. The guy could juggle at least seven balls at a time and did magic tricks all day. He worked there but hung out there all the time. This dude would have quite a few onlookers which isn’t surprising.
So did i work there for 10 years with along with. Mathew. Yep. Skated like all the time
As someone who works with him they are correct
That's incredible. Was this at Lloyd Center by any chance?
B.O.O.O.B.S.
1. Awkward band?
2. Weird setting?
3. Unexplained shots of a figure skater?
4. Video has nothing to do with the song lyrics?
Check and checkmate. Indie rock video complete.
Pr0fessorScience it was my debut ice dancing. I had to retire I pulled a hammy. It was horrific. I felt like a flamingo though
Total narcissism. Smooching the one who can never smooch back.
I wonder if your Cynical irony has led you to wear a face mask? ;)
I remember looking HARD at the ocean knowing to look hard bc I felt it was the last time for something. Meaning the last time I took a hard look at the ocean at the time was the last vacation I had with my parents before they divorced. This song was playing on my CD player when I was about 15/16. Means everything to me
Goddamn, so nostalgic. This was a major fixture for me in high school. Listening to it, I am instantly transported to that time, it's 2004-ish and I'm 16 again. Soundtrack of adolescence, and it continues to give well into adulthood.
same exact feeling (and age!)
I was 21 in 2004 but same, so nostalgic
I feel the same way!! Instantly feel 16 agaun
Listened to this a lot in high school as well more around 2009 but omg the nostalgia
The shins know how to start off an album
FACTS
This album made me fall in love with music back when I was in elementary school. To this day I still listen to this album often, and it has stayed a constant in my life. That fuzzy riff gives me goose bumps every single time.
RIP Huddy. I still have this EP that you gave me so long ago. It's been through the paces the past decade, scratched and scarred but still tucked into my cd book ever reminding me how much I miss you buddy. I hope you found some peace.
this is a great hit from the BEFORETIME.
The song "Kissing the Lipless" by The Shins is about a person reflecting on a lost friendship. The person is looking back and trying to make sense of the sadness they feel. The person is recognizing that they had put too much of their own emotions onto the friendship and are now missing things in the aftermath. The chorus speaks to the realization that they are now "kissing the lipless" - meaning they are trying to find connection and love in places that can never truly satisfy them on their own. The song speaks to the feeling of desperately seeking connection and love, even when it may not be healthy or sustainable for the longterm.
I see it as he is the one who is lipless, I see it as kinda a prequel to Gone for Good. He says the friendship but this song has a lot of tones that are speaking about a lover. They have too much “on their sleeves to do with him” meaning they are too attached.
That’s just my take, though
The Shins know how to start an album. The first song is usually the highlight, and this is no different
I relate to this more than I'd like to..
I'm 30, been listening since high school ...(garden State?) :)
I discovered so much awesome music from that movie
That ice skater works at the gas station next to my house.
Alx Nmn oh neat (:
That’s kinda depressing lol
Chutes too narrow and oh inverted world are possibly the best debut/follow up albums ever.
Better than Murmur and Reckoning by R.E.M. or Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain Crooked Rain by Pavement?
All good in my book 😁
Definitely one of the best bands today.
loves so much this song back in 2004. was an indie hit
The song is called "Kissing the Lipless" ... they could've left it at that and it would still be one of my favorites.
