My thoughts exactly use cutting disc for cutting and a flapper disc to sharpen a nice edge to cut roots and brush , funny that tool is called a rake hoe in australia .
@@SteadySpin Setting here, working, see the ping, and now i'm looking at my shovel to see how i can make a new tool because of you. If i screw up my shovel its your fault. Great vid once again sir! I wanna make one of these with a plasma cutter. Our family spent the summer working with the rangers at Paris Mt State Park and they have a bunch of those.
Kevin, thanks for the inspiration. Took out a stock McLeod and couldn’t help but feel like it was a bit heavy. Did a similar modification to yours and room about 1.5” off the square side and 1.25” off the rake side. Swings a lot better now with almost no downside. Thanks! Also sprayed camo colors for the stealth tool stashes
Head weight is all about the moment. You've lowered the moment of inertia on that tool. You'll be able to do a lot more work with it due to the energy savings. I have an old McLeod that I customized with a 60" handle....I'm 6'4". I love that tool, but you've inspired me to stubby it up a bit. My trails are mostly rock....very little dirt. I've found myself backing off more often than not when pulling "molars" from the trail surface as the tines start to bend too much. Stubby McLeod.....with an extra long handle....will be an effective tool. Might even stubby up the tines on the Rogue Hoe (Sarah Palin) tools we have in our organization's inventory.
So much going on here lol. In the rock stuff watch your edge. It’s easy to weaken it by trying to get a larger “sharpened blade length “. I hope that makes sense. It’s a stronger tool not customized.
This vid was very helpful I picked up a McLeod and I am volunteering for the first time maintaining my local downhill park. Super excited to be part of it!! Hahah quack quack qwack
I'd like to try shorter teeth that are less pointy. Sharpened side edge would be handy for light cutting on roots/vines. Might have to mod a couple of ours!
Imagine a world where people make videos for entertainment and they call it UA-cam where huge sparks shoot across the room and someone has a tissue to hand you before every tear of disappears from your eye onto your cheek. But then there is the place where people don’t know the difference between a grinding disc and a cut off wheel. Are we in a blur between the two ?
You likely build more trails than me, but can you share what you found better about the McLeod vs Rogue Hoe tools? I have the 70HR and 70AR Travis Tool and I love the 70AR as an all around tool. I am kinda wondering if I am missing something and need to get myself a McLeod.
Travis tool is pretty amazing. All around trail maintenance for sure. I use the McLeod all day long tho. Maybe one day we can hit some trail work one day.
Hi, Kevin. I noticed when you were using the angle grinder that you used a grinding disk not a cutoff disk. The grinding disk is used for smoothing off welds and grinding high spots. The cutoff disk is made to cut pieces of metal. I bet Seth has a cut off disk somewhere! otherwise grate job and cool vid!
10% of the whole tool, but a much higher percentage of the HEAD of the tool, which greatly impacts how the whole thing swings. Similar concept to shortening a sword and adding that weight to the pommel.
@@SteadySpin your such a hero, I love seeing you on Seth's channel one of my favourite videos is watching you rebuild the rim with JB weld, happy I can now binge watch all your content while I'm still in lockdown in the UK

One of your most viewed videos then take a month off? Just show a time lapse of whatever trail your building. Those are massively poplar format videos. Seth's backyard, Berm Peak, skills with Phil. And here we see the true cost of using Seth's garage for free... dance puppet DANCE!!! 6:15 XD But seriously Kevin you should do more videos because your voice is a lot less whiny than SOME people. Tee hee hee
It's not just 11% weight reduction. It's 11% of the total weight, but that all came off the head of it. I would bet you cut the weight of the head by 30%. I split firewood with a splitting maul and recently switched from a 8lb maul on a 36" handle to a 4.5lb maul on a 32" handle. I can swing that lighter maul all day long. Only 3 times in 4 cords of wood did I wish I had a heavier maul, but I just grabbed my wedge and got through those rounds that way. I'd take a lighter tool I can swing all day over a heavier tool that burns me out in 30 minutes every time.

Been subbed, bro. You’ll have to let me know if this tactic works to sway that number!

Get some cutoff wheels for the grinder for the next cutting adventure.
happy someone said it
I’m honestly impressed he made it through with just a grinding wheel, haha
I was going to say the same, a Zip disc would go through that in no time.
😩
First thought lol
I can’t be the only one who is bugged by the use of a grinding disc to cut stuff
i know, wtf.
it was so painful to watch.
It's pretty terrifying watching someone operate a grinder with no guard, and no face shield...

that poor grinding wheel...

With all the heat you put into the blade, it may have ruined the heat treat and temper. It may not hold an edge as long
Very true. There's also a chance that only a small portion of the edge was tempered to begin with, and all of those new edges are in soft steel
