what booming voice this man has, just stunning
I've never seen such a perfect baritone.
Correct term would be hear, lad. Strange enough My name is Isaac and I've had the Nickname Talisman all my life. Very uncommon to see another.
@@xXEnZeR0Xx And yet by seeing merely your comment, I've already seen an idiot.
Honestly, He has an amazing pair of pipes I'm almost jealous.
aw come one guys the woman was really sweet I think for actually participating like HE WANTED TO. He asked and no one answers, so she just volunteered and now everyone says 'she annoys them.' That's so odd to me. And her not actually 100% pulling the rope is probably because of back problems, at one point in the video she I think tells him she can't do it like that so 'she will do it like this.' She just acts confident, but thats totally fine, more power to her.
Yeah, I liked her too. I'm a rennie at Texas Ren Fest, as well as several others, and audience participation is crucial to many of the acts at these types of shows.
Her attitude was wholesome, her inability to follow instructions was less so.
She's great! She has a tag on, so she's a festival volunteer. She jumped in because nobody else did; way to break the ice for others and not leave David hanging.
She looks very self-conscious in the beginning; I'd say not accustomed to public performance. She spends most of her time watching David closely, probably worried that she hasn't got the movements quite right. But her joy once she settles in is wonderful.
Your man with the notepad at 2.25 makes me die. Yep. I'm hauling, I'm hauling. Hold on, I'm just writing this shit down. 'Dear Aunt Louise, since you moved to Australia, things have picked right up here in Portsmouth. Kevin is feeling much better and Sarah has a new job. Hold tight. *does hauling arms.*
So yeh, it's all good news. How's Adelaide? Working on the suntan? It's a bit grey here back in Blighty. Oop. Hold on. Two secs. *does hauling arms*
+C Hughes He actually does some great and talented stuff when they do other songs like "Roll the Old Chariot", as he is the harmonises.
+Pickens Incorporated
Ah I wasn't criticising, it just made me laugh. I think the video is great. I know it's at a folk festival so it's not exactly a random crowd but they sound great. Nice to see some positive music.
+kingofblades Not sure I'm clear what you mean. I've been pretty clear i wasn't insulting anyone. I've really enjoyed the music since finding it. It just made me laugh a little. Also can you clear up what you mean by his 'predecessors'? Do you mean everyone who's ever lived before him? I'm a little unclear. I had a little look at your profile to try and guess what you meant. Was is a misunderstanding? I see your favourited videos are 'Overwatch . Rip Butt'. , 'New Nigerian Queen of Vagina' and 'Milo explains why you're all wrong about anti semitism'
I'd love to know more about what you can share with me about my predecessors, and his, and well, I suppose everyones.
Nice to meet you I cant wait for the enlightenment to strike. (Dont worry theres no zombies, its not Fox New's) Like the Hat in the profile pic btw it suits you very well. You look very gallant. If you get a chance please fill me in a bit more on British and World Folk sea shanty traditions. Let me tell you I'm an empty cup just waiting to be filled. I'll be voting for Trump too. Well I wont but let's hope all our antecedents are.
+C Hughes Don't worry, I both appreciated the music and it's roots...and also laughed at notepad guy.
watching this clip for years. Still love it
This man is amazingly charismatic. I saw his Roll The Old Chariot performance and am on the hunt for more like it. You can put this guy just about anywhere in the world with a crowd and everyone would be having a good time. Would love to be walking down the street and see this. It just makes you want to be apart of it.
I fucking love sea shanties
I love this guy!!:D:D I saw in in the"Roll the old chariot" and I want to visit such festival from now on :D
Love his energy
Love every part of this! David Coffin is the guy everyone wants to know and the participants great sports. Any criticisms written below are people who have lost their Joie de vie!
I'm using this for my boy scout camp skit with my troop... thank you David Coffin
I would love to go to one of these. All the excited energy would make me giddy
Woops I clapped and cheered sitting in my living room :))))
song starts at 1:55 if you want to skip to it, but I'd recommend watching the first part, its really interesting
This is something I would of loved to experience..... And Mr. Coffin has a hellava voice !
the guy in the background, with the white beard and red shirt is in everyone of these and as killing it
sea shanties 2021 and no one can deny it
Why couldn't I have discovered this at more social hours
Outstanding!
Super voice !
I swear...I was born in the wrong century..
Love the sea shanties! 😆
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant ! :D
Can you come to Portsmouth England our council are destroying our maritime history.maybe you can revive it.
Glad to see a journalist in the crowd ... Or an ethnomusicologist getting down both the words and the choreography.
The joes are powerful you can tell
awesome! really awesome
fantastic.
Loved it!
This guy is great :D
that dude is an absolute BOMB!
You had to be sailing on a historic tall ship to fully understand the sea shanties
That lady is a sweetheart!
When I was a little lad
And so my mother told me,
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
hat if I did not kiss the gals
Me lips would all grow moldy.
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, the good ship is a-bolding,
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, the sheet is now unfold-ing,
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
King Louis was the king of France
Before the revolution
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
But then he got his head cut off
Which spoiled his constitution
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, we'll haul for better weather
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way haul away, we'll haul away together
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
The cook is in the galley boys
Making duff so handy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
The captain's in his cabin lads
Drinking wine and brandy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, I'll sing to you of Nancy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, she's just my cut and fancy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way, haul away, we'll haul for better weather
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way haul away, we'll haul away together
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
"are your arm broken?" ahahaha
The brits that never left the new land.
What's interesting about this is that's probably just about enough maritime culture and 'nautical mindedness' in Portsmouth that when he said, 'raise your starboard hand' (about 1:30) most people knew which hand he meant.
My man, Stephen King doing the right moves. Props.
best Dad?
What a voice. We’ll done me lad
WOWWWWW
Question why does he pronounce revolution like "revolut-shy-on?
thatguy2366 It's just the way the songs were originally sung back then.
Look at crap pronunciations in todays music for Christs sake!
Because sailors had a tendency to preserve older pronunciations, and the '-tion' ending used to be two syllables.
Тянем потянем, вытянуть не можем.
We haul.

She probably had her reasons, back problems perhaps.
smh...crazy cat lady
The standing radar suddenly battle because bathtub biophysically suspect modulo a gigantic store. organic, rustic beaver
dude wtf is this i’m crying laughing
this is that shit i was stuck in traffic for on the way to my ball game smh portsmouth new hampshire got some sea shanties im still laughing insane
No offence, but shanty voices are much better when singularly male.
I'm sorry but over confidence the woman displays annoys me
1:20 well if he could restrain himself from mimicking stereotypical "girly" mannerisms in an attempt at making misogyny funny, that would be greatly appreciated
i'll add that we can see it is misogyny because the incels are commenting "she's so annoying" (:
@@em-jd4do I agree with you that the people calling her annoying are wrong but I don't really see how him making a joke about acting "girly" is bad? It's a halyard shanty meant to be sung by men working on ships, it definitely not meant to sung in anything less than a loud strong voice. He's just having a little fun while at the same time correcting them.
that lady was wicked annoying
He's telling a lesson. He teaches the folk to do a "long haul" shanty they pull in time after 30 secs training through a song.. That's how they rolled, or pulled back in the day.
"What shall we do with the drunken sailor," is a short haul shanty.. Different rhythms for different jobs. All about keeping time. I love this.
Hey that's pretty cool!
@@MrTalkingCorn Maybe if you try to get more into Shantys, Do yourself a favor, and try to hear some "calll & response" songs from chain gangs. (Would be more interessting if it where older, but thats as old as it gets with audio. :D) There is an interessting simmilarity... ;)
wait so what exactly are they pulling?
@@weeeeee831 The most common would be the halyard rigging. Basically pulling up the main sail. One of the reasons this would be done is in preparation for a storm. A verse not used in this demonstration sings
Well now can't ya see
The black clouds a-gatherin'
Away haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Well now can't ya see
The storm clouds a risin'
Away haul away we'll haul away Joe.
