The Extended Version is a gem. Jake's life on Earth is actually SHOWN instead of just being talked about and the scene where Grace tells Jake about Sylwanin's death allows Sigourney Weaver to really show off her acting chops after mostly being snarky throughout the rest of the movie. Sylwanin wasn't even mentioned in the Theatrical Version, so thank goodness Cameron managed to get the Extended Cut released in cinemas. It's definitely the superior movie.

You pointed out exactly what is wrong with many “critics” of media. Many act like they know and understand the filmmaking process but clearly don’t. All films go through re shoots, which is the go to for these “critics” to have their “gotcha” moments. I mean look at how they used it for almost every DCEU film. It also shows how competent Lucas and Cameron are as directors that they try to see their films through the eyes of the audience and try to understand what would resonate with them. Many directors have a vision in mind for any film, but many of those ideas have to be scrapped or left out and many directors feel bad that those scenes and ideas are left out. But know that it will hurt their film if left in. Unlike other directors like Tug On My Titty’s (think about it) who keep a bunch of stupid humor regardless if it makes sense or not.

Over the years, I heard it was bad, had terrible characters and was all about an in your face environmentalism message. Eventually the girl that is now my wife, wanted to show it to me. I figured I might as well. I loved the movie and couldn't understand why everyone was saying it was terrible. It's awesome that James Cameron descended from on high and went out of his way to try and help the "unwashed masses". He remembers what it's like to be down on your luck because he was a truck driver before entering the film industry. A man that high up in the film industry is set for life, so he had absolutely nothing to gain by trying to help people who are struggling, yet he did it anyway. You won't see many people in Hollywood who go out of their way to do what he does. Plenty will virtue signal about it but when push comes to shove, almost all of them stay in their ivory towers instead of personally getting their hands dirty. The louder a person virtue signals, the less likely they are to be sincere.

There were multiple factors that kept A2 from getting close to A1 in terms of Box office, one of them being that there was a war going on, with the movie being 100% censored in Russia and the fact that times have changed. Streaming platforms have taken away a lot of audience from cinema, it's a fact. A lot of people just rather wait for the movie to come out on their favorite streaming platform instead of going to the cinema and watch it, so yeah, A2 didn't make as much money as A1 did but I believe you are missing out on key factors here.
When it comes to the rest of your comment, I gotta say that I am confused. Cameron had big expectations for the sequel and he delivered. The sequel did things better than the first movie, like the characters and pacing for example. In a lot of ways A2 feels more polished than the first movie, so even tho the story isn't flawless, it is definitely a step in the right direction and in many ways an improvement over the first one, so as far as I can tell, he delivered on the expectations much like he did with T2 back in the day. He is still the king of sequels.

I’m two and a half hours in and I want to bring up two points that you brought up. The troupes in films, they’re in every film as you pointed out. I’ve seen so many channels calling out a film or tv show for its tropes but then praise something else that is blatant in its use of tropes. A trope in any piece of media is just what the basic story is about for example the boy meets girl trope, man vs nature, man vs man, man vs himself and man vs supernatural. These are the core basics for any and all films. John Wick is also full of tropes but it’s awesome regardless of that. It’s not the trope that’s the issue, it’s how the story is told. Star Wars and all superhero films are all good Vs evil, man vs man and man vs himself tropes. Some better than others but once again it’s how the story is told. Then it’s the “it’s pushing an agenda” or “it’s woke” argument being passed around and extremely overused statements. I’m not going to deny that it’s being pushed so heavily into media now, with characters being defined ONLY by their race, gender, sexuality and identity and they being the only focal point for so many characters. But there was always some social politics in many pieces of media, but it was how they told them. If we look at the work of Chris Claremont, George Perez, Stan Lee and many other amazing writers in American comics from the 70’s -90’s. Many of the comics at the time introduced and discussed many social issues of the time. George Perez’s Wonder Woman run was full of feminist undertones and the X-men are an algorithm for the civil rights movement. But they worked these issues in away that didn’t distract from the overall story, but also giving the characters more depth and personality than just their own agendas. A really great example of what I mean is, there’s a scene in two different shows. One is “A Discovery of Witches” and the other is “Yellowjackets”. In the world of “Discovery of Witches” there’s three major factions, demons, witches and vampires. Each group has a leader or main being who governs their own respective groups. The demons is lead by a woman who is black, on the day of a big meeting she’s says “there’s to much white male representation in this counsel”. Now for “Yellowjackets” the character Taissa who is also black is running for a political office but needs a wealthy backer for her campaign. Now her character suffered a traumatic event when she was in school along with her other classmates and the potential backer was a white woman. Who wanted to exploit what happened to her and her classmates, if she wants her money. Taissa basically tells her to F off and never once did either bring of each others race. Yet that scene is more powerful because it’s not what was told but what wasn’t told. There’s ways to include social political strife in creative ways. What’s so funny is how so many of these UA-cam channels tout the whole “he’s preaching and pushing an agenda”
Yet use his films to advocate for how movie qualities have gone down and how strong male leads used to be. Yet Cameron is a leftist preachy hollywoood agenda pusher. A simple story doesn’t make something bad or infantile.

Calling a movie emotionally manipulative is the laziest form of film critique. The entire point of cinema and storytelling in general is “emotional manipulation”. What’s hilarious is that the guy at 3:38:30 is explaining exactly why the Na’vi conceptually work and why Cameron made them the way that he did, while missing why this is good craftsmanship.

Took me nearly four days to watch this, but it's extremely well done. Truly a passion project. While Avatar isn't my favorite Cameron film, it's definitely something I've come to respect as time has gone on. I would love to hear your views on Last Samurai as well.
Appreciate all the months it took to make this and that you gave such a spotlight to James Horner as he's made some of my favorite film scores, and my personal favorite film score 'Mask of Zorro'. Film scores are underappreciated and it's nice to see such depth in what is already a long analysis.
I always prefer extended versions of films and I do have that for Avatar as well, along with Lord of the Rings and Kindom of Heaven, all three of which are the definitive version in my opinion. So crazy to think all of the things that seem to be essential especially in another film like Dawn of Justice. Not everyone's cup of tea I know, but no one denies that or Snyder's other massive cut in Justice League are the definitive versions.
But as always, appreciate the willingness to point out flaws even in a gushing review. It's a rare quality. Certainly take your time to rest after this massive project.

    Miles Quaritch's motives for wanting a scrap with the Na'vi might be related to his scar. Remember his line when he first meets Jake;
"Three tours of Nigeria. Not a scratch. I come out here..." he points to his scar "Day one."
Granted, we don't know if one of the Na'vi gave him that scar. Judging by its shape, it's actually more likely to have been one of the Pandoran predators. However, it's one of a couple of hints that Quaritch has a personal beef not just with the Na'vi but with Pandora as a whole. The other hint comes in his introductory speech.
"If there is a Hell, you might want to go there for some R&R after a tour on Pandora."
Later on in that same speech, Quaritch pretty clearly spells out his motivations. However, because James Cameron actually knows how to write dialogue, despite what pseudo-intellectuals say, it doesn't feel like exposition.
"As Head of Security, it is my job to keep you alive. I will not succeed. Not with all of you."
Miles Quaritch is a realist. He knows how dangerous Pandora is due to personal experience. He knows that many of his soldiers WILL die whilst touring the planet and he doesn't sugarcoat it for them because he wants them to be prepared. He wants to keep as many of them alive as possible, even if it means performing pre-emptive strikes on "the hostiles".
You get other hints that Quaritch cares when he calls soldiers like Corporal Lyle Wainfleet by their first names instead of their military titles. Unlike Jake, Quaritch has nothing to gain by cosying up to Wainfleet because the Corporal has no connection to the Na'vi outside of shooting at them. It's clear that Quaritch just sees Wainfleet as a brother in arms rather than an asset to be used to undermine their enemies and it actually adds a bit more depth to his relationship with Jake. Quaritch sees ALL of his soldiers as brothers and sisters in arms, so when one of them turns on him, it actually stings.
Even with all that information people still called Quaritch cartoonishly evil in the first movie. However, only the stupid or wilfully blind can deny that some real depth is present in Quaritch throughout Way of Water. And it's consistent with his portrayal in the first Avatar, despite Quaritch himself insisting "I'm not that man." He not only commented that "Good men. Good women" had died because of Jake's betrayal (confirming what was already implied in the first Avatar about Quaritch genuinely caring about his soldiers) but he also let Kiri go when Neytiri threatened Spider. In fact, Quaritch actually seemed less like a savage than Neytiri did in that scene. He may have been Spider's father but they'd only known each other for a couple of months at most. Neytiri watched Spider grow up, playing with her children who thought of him as their brother, learning the Na'vi culture, and despite all that she was still absolutely going to murder the kid to get back at Quaritch. Yes, Netayan had just been killed and Neytiri was mad with grief but Spider was, for all intents and purposes, family. In fact, she was literally the ONLY member of the Sully family who refused to accept him which hints that she still retains some level of racism against Humans. It also hints that Quaritch might actually have good reason to think of the Na'vi as savages. If he's already seen that intolerant and violent side of other Na'vi, Neytiri just provided him with even further confirmation that they're little more than wild animals.
At the end of the day, Miles Quaritch is nowhere near as one-dimensional as people like to say he is. You get hints at a deeper character in Avatar, then outright confirmation that there's more going on with him under the surface in Way of Water. A great moment in that movie is when Quaritch picks up the skull of his Human body. So much is said without words. He just stares silently at the skull, then crushes it with a pained look on his face, aware that this corpse was HIS body and he's destroying a fundamental part of his old life but wanting to move on. It must be a surreal and existential experience to come face to face with your own corpse and the complex emotions Quaritch was going through were conveyed without a single line of dialogue.
Honestly, if James Cameron hadn't resurrected Quaritch, I'm convinced that Way of Water wouldn't be as good as it was. Bringing him back was risky but it absolutely paid off. Jake Sully and Neytiri can carry a movie but they need a worthy opponent and Miles Quaritch provided that in spades.
And one more thing. Stephan Lang is the perfect actor to play Miles Quaritch. He doesn't do many big budget movies and the few that he has done rarely allow him to play significant roles but James Cameron struck gold by casting him in Avatar and giving him a meaty role to chew on. Lang has real leading man presence which makes him such a commanding villain. This role is going to be a significant part of his legacy when he shuffles off this mortal coil and I hope he knows and is proud of that.

That little detail of Grace assuming that Selfridge and Quaritch wanted the Avatar program to fail is brilliant when you take their horrified reaction to the death of their squad into account. Quaritch was ready for a fight but he was motivated by his belief that a war was inevitable rather than a desire to see dead bodies everywhere. As for Selfridge, he didn't want to get into a fight at all.
The fact that Grace misinterpreted both of their motivations shows the miscommunication between the Marines and the Avatar program. If we apply this to the real world, it also emphasises the miscommunication between powerful companies and the individuals working in them. They aren't willing to LISTEN to each other. Grace is as guilty of this as Selfridge and Quaritch are which is something that I never noticed in the Extended Cut. So much more depth with such a seemingly small detail.

You know what I am finding out more and more. The internet mind or intellect has become the voice for all things right nowadays. If you do not check certain checkboxes in their definitions than you are perceived lesser in intellect or understanding.
The biggest thing I have learnt in my animation career is KISS, which stands for *keep it simple stupid.* James understands simplicity. James Cameron is out here making master classes and billions, living out his happiness while many internet voices are depressed, not fully self actualized in their being and making much less successful steps then he is. Yet, if you give them a keyboard they act as if they are the world on what makes a good film. Where are the films from these crowds?
News flash, the cool term 'movies' was coined to simply mean moving pictures. People back then used to just go to watch movies to escape the realities of this world. They wanted to be entertained and have a good time. Sure the art of film making has evolved over the years but the core reason majority of the world watches movies today remains the same. Simply to escape or be tricked into escaping at least. James Cameron successful does this every time.
I enjoyed the first Avatar as a child and it was the first film I have ever bought, steel book and everything. Everyone I know loves it. We all live on an island in the Caribbean and find that the film catered to the feeling of heart, culture and religion really well. It is when I went online that I see the hate, and most of the hate is coming from the western people online. I think the internet is suffering from a curse of the over burdens of knowledge. The more you know, the more things become less spectacular and wonderful; and people seems to not be able to separate that notion when they sit down and enjoy a film these days. This is the plague that is affecting a subset of movie goers and if you stray away from these minds, you'd enjoy almost any film you set out to watch.
I have not watched Avatar WOW yet but know this, when I am about to, I have no reason to believe that I will be having a bad time.
    Have a great day!

James Cameron started out as a truck driver and was inspired to enter the film industry by Star Wars. He even became friends with George Lucas later in life. However, when he started his career, Cameron had NONE of the Hollywood connections that so many people in the film industry are given from birth. He's the complete opposite of a hack because he had no choice but to succeed through a combination of talent and determination.

Regarding the love story of The Last Samurai, it's not so much that Algren is Tom Cruise. It's the fact that while he did kill her husband in defense of his own life, he regretted it to the point where he befriended her and her family, giving her mixed feelings and then finally got up the courage to apologize, earning her forgiveness and eventually her love. It takes a big man to say he's sorry and mean it.

4:38:50 Agreed, there's NOTHING wrong with composers quoting their past works in new films. Example: Mark Mancina, the composer for, imho, the best "Die Hard clone" Speed (1994) reused the piece from the beginning where Jack and Harry were racing up the stairwell to the 32nd floor in the opening of the first Bad Boys film where the bad guys are attempting to break into the police station. Also agree that there's nothing wrong with having multiple different versions of one theme in a movie or game. In the video game Resident Evil Code: Veronica, there's a song called "Berceuse", or Alexia's Lullaby, and there are at least a dozen different variations of it in that game, a piano version, a music box version, a song version, etc. Having multiple different versions of one theme helps add different vibes and emotions.

Don't forget that the final act of TG Maverick seems derivative of ANH--- but thats because ANH's trench run/ death star battle was heavily derivative of other WW2 movies from the past. In particular The Dambusters from the 1950s, which it even lifts exact dialogue and camera shots etc from. It just goes to show that this kind of thing is massive in movies. There are supposedly only 7 basic stories that you can tell - and the hundreds of thousands of movies ever made just tell those same 7 stories in new and interesting ways...

The reason why Avatar works is because yes it’s simple BUT it takes its self SERIOUS. So it allows the audience to take it serious. We are talking about a film with 9ft tall blue aliens, mec suits, and flying dragons and the global audience don’t even notice all that because everything is taken serious and represents something we can relate to. Avatar does what other sci fi films wish they could do, draw in the global general audience who’s not even into movies like that especially heavy sci fi type of films with aliens and shit. After watching tens of hours of Cameron interviews, basically everything I could find on youtube my main are conclusions are"
    1. Cameron is the fucking man.
    2. He isn't arrogant, at least not anymore. He is confident and that triggers the haters that think he needs to walk around with a hang dog expression, saying "aw shucks" while putting himself down. Cameron is always praising and uplifting other creators and very rarely puts other movies down. He's not thin-skinned at all- look at that sex pest Charlie Rose try to shit on Cameron and Avatar, and Cameron just laughs it off and says "bring it on!'
    3. Cameron is a better motivational/inspirational speaker than the likes of Tony Robbins or whoever's on Oprah and Tedtalks these days. And he's a great fucking teacher. He can explain complex subjects in easily digestible ways and is never condescending or snobby. He's a blue collar dude through and through.
    4. He's never lost that child=like sense of wonder. Despite his image as a hard-edged dictator who makes macho action flicks, he has a real sweet, nerdy and hippy child side. He has that openness and balls to walls side of Jake, or Jack from Titanic, that love of tech and science like all the scientist in Avatar, but he has that part of him that's a little kid walking around the woods of Ontario or getting excited reading books about ocean exploration, kind of like Kiri.
    5. He has a deep. deep understanding of people's deepest longings. His movies have been the global megasuccesses they were because he just gets something deep about human psychology

James Cameron has the rare ability to tickle his audience's 6th sense. His passion for his movies is genuine and is motivated by artistic integrity beyond all else. It's the 6th sense that communicates this to people because you can't really recognise it with your 5 main senses, unless you've done a lot of research on Cameron, but you just KNOW that he's being sincere. That's why his movies resonate with so many people. It's the same with George Lucas and the late Stanley Kubrick. There's so much of their individual personalities in their movies that you can't replicate them which means their films are as genuine as you're ever going to see in a medium that is based mostly - not entirely but mostly - around telling fictional stories.

You can hate the Avatar movies all you want, but they are James Cameron’s vision, with a lot of fans who do love the movies and James Cameron’s vision. And whether you like his movies or not James Cameron is the closest thing we’re currently ever gonna get to having another modern day George Lucas, and that we should saver as many of these independent artists and creative visionaries, with their creative visions like James Cameron and George Lucas, as much as possible when it comes to modern Hollywood.
And if these Avatar haters really believe James Cameron’s Avatar movies will be better off at the hands of Hollywood without James Cameron and that they can’t be any worse without James Cameron, then the haters should always remember what happened when George Lucas sold Star Wars and how well all that turned out. Because you’ll never know what good thing you had or what other people had already loved until it’s already gone
I think it’s important we have more of these type of videos just to remind people of what they did to George Lucas and are currently doing to James Cameron and hopefully this time we can be able to prevent another Disney Lucasfilm purchase from happening if we continue to spread the word and call out all this bull crap

The Twilight Zone and Star Trek frequently used allegory. Harry Potter is also quite similar to WW2.

I mean...I was gonna try to watch it until he said that he's never heard any point of substance that it's a "watered down plagiarized version of other movies"...
I mean, the first movie literally is the plot of Dances with Wolves. Only all of the interesting conflicts from that story are missing, and this one is just, "bad man wants thing"...
It's a story about a man from a more advanced civilization integrating into a more primitive, native community that is more connected to nature and lives off the land. He does this after learning that his people's perception of them was incorrect. I mean for Christ's sake, Dances with Wolves is about a man who was about to lose a leg...Avatar is about a man who already lost his legs. And that last feature makes Avatar worse because he's actually gets to have a full, working body again...just one that doesn't fit into his society. So...instead of converting into this new society strictly for moralistic principles and appreciation for their lifestyle, he has a HEAVY incentive to turncoat.
The political aspects of the North and South fighting, the war with another tribe, the desertion, defection, capture, and freeing of the main character. This one replaced all of that with a Michael Bay-esque battle scene at the end.
The fact that this dude said he's heard "nothing" of substance on the most common argument against this movie, not even one minute into this 8 hour spiel, leads me to believe he has absolutely nothing of value to say in the remainder. Because he HAS to be flat out plugging his ears and saying "la la la" to make that statement with a straight face.

It's ironic to think that these mindless haters of misunderstood films (whether if it's the Star Wars prequels or James Cameron's Avatar) have become like Terminators who want to destroy the reputation of the filmmakers who created these legendary films, without realizing that without them, we wouldn't have gotten legendary films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator and Aliens. But I guess it's like what Kyle Reese once said, "they can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!"
Thanks for putting out another film critique talking about the good merits of a film and addressing the misunderstandings about the film. Avatar isn't much of favorite of mine when you compare it to the other movies you praised like the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Mulan and Spider-Man. But I still enjoy it all the same😁👍

Wow, I really love this - Thank you for making this video essay! Avatar has simple yet very profound messages and deeper stuff under the surface level going on but people deliberatly ignore it because "smurfahontas bad"
I love a well made parody or making fun of something, but it always intrigued me how people even delegitimize some of the objective great things or getting downright hateful towards this movie.
Like if they are offended personally by it.
Its frustrating to hear the same old bullshit why avatar is the worst all over again, but it is also not surprising because it always was cool and edgy hating on something successful. How social media and algoritms tend to work, it got a lot worse in the last 10-15 years.
And avatar, being a deeply sincere and passionate piece of art from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time has a lot of lore to make fun of or hating on.
(Never got the hate for the phantom menance either, i loved every aspect as a kid.)
But as time goes on and nostalgia kicks in, the prequel-trilogy now finally gets the love it deserves, and i already can see the shift happening slowly regarding to avatar, atleast the loudest minority got shut down a bit with the success of the 2nd movie.
The silent majority loves the series anyway.
Maybe not all are dedicated like you, creating an 8-hour long well-researched, defensive loveletter, but they will continue to show up for it and the saga will be as big in the long run as star wars 1-6, no doubt about that.
The first movie was the catalyst for changing my life for the better and i will never forget the impact it had, has on me to this day.
Thank you again for this, you have earned a sub and made me appreciate some aspects of the movie even more!

I haven't watched the first Avatar in years but when it came out, I was practically making sweet, tender love to that movie. I was riding it harder than Nomz rides George Lucas' and James Cameron's massive, glorious dicks. It didn't matter if it was in the cinema or at home because Avatar's just as good on the small screen as on the big screen. The Extended Edition elevates an already great movie into an outright masterpiece.

Ok explanation for the lack of 3rd pair of arms. The prolemuras that we see in the beginning of the movie are clearly related. But interestingly have their upper arm fused and have two fingers on each hand. So I predict that as the ancestors of the Navi relied more on walking on there feet their lower arms and hands fused as the used them more for tool making and object manipulation

Finally got through this video, I watched it in chunks here and there. You are raising some great points, and I am inspired by the detailed commitment on display here. I remember watching that video on Avatar's ironic soundtrack, and feeling slight disappointment towards James Cameron, without doing my own research. However, I had always been a big fan of Avatar's soundtrack, so I never 100% understood the viewpoint put forward in there that the soundtrack is apparently trash and unoriginal.
But anyway, I hope this video reaches the right people and achieves what you are hoping for. It would be a shame if all the criticism and hatred that is directed at Avatar and James Cameron leads to the same outcome as it did with George Lucas. And I hope that's one point everybody could agree on, be they detractors or fans of Avatar or Cameron, that bandwagoning on a creative to an extent that they lose their creative passion is overall a bad outcome, and we would all be worse off for driving another creative genius out of the business. And from everything you have shown, he seems like a genuine person as well, not a Hollywood suit, nor a "woke" activist. And I think we need more people like him, who are just plain old-fashioned genuine and apolitical. Anyway, you have my respect and appreciation!

Hey Anomaly I’m really happy I found your channel! I was binging so many of your vids when I discovered you. You actually convinced me Jar Jar isn’t as bad as people say lol. I have a request, I remember in your Rise of Skywalker video you mentioned Dark Empire, which is a part of the OEU( original expanded universe), it’s the one where Luke has a son and Han and Leia have 3 kids instead of 1. I just think it’d be cool if you did a video breaking down your thoughts on it, it’s a radio drama that’s 3 hours long I believe. I know you said in the video you thought it was ridiculous but I think the writers who were creating that story were using it as a springboard to just get up in running, like they’d bring Palpatine back and then go from there. I feel it takes away from Anakin being the chosen one but it doesn’t take away from Darth Vader’s sacrifice, Luke and Leia kill him in the end but that doesn’t change how Anakin still did the right thing in the end. I’m overall curious how you feel about the OEU, I’ve listened to a few audiobooks of them and gone to wookipedia. This past summer I bought a ton of the books because I’ve realized Star Wars is dead so might as well enjoy it in some capacity.

He never tries to force people to agree with him, he's just speaking from the heart instead of virtue signalling. The context behind his comments about testosterone proves it because he was referring to how it affects HIM, not how it affects men in general.
James Cameron also makes movies from the heart just like George Lucas did. However, entitled idiots take him for granted, just like they took Lucas for granted. I've been waiting for this! Also, 8 hours?! Oh boy, I better grab some popcorn, this is going to be good!
I'll admit, I was somewhat part of the hate-bandwagon when Avatar first came out. Why? Simple: I didn't get it. I watched the trailer, I knew *exactly* how everything would play out, thought it'd be generic schlock as a result, so I turned the other way and never looked back. I was baffled when it ended up becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, and even more so when someone, I forgot who, got the DVD for my birthday. My exact thought at the time: "Aw no, I'm gonna have to deal with this crap now?!"
So my family and I all sat down to watch it, and when it was over well I wasn't sure what to think. The story *did* play out exactly as I thought it would, but the execution was so good and the world was so interesting that it didn't matter. We all ended up re-watching it the following night, and since then Avatar has become one of my absolute favorite James Cameron films. Is it his best? No, I still prefer Aliens (my personal favorite of Cameron's), and the first two Terminator films are definitely more iconic, but the more I think about Pandora, the lore, the characters, etc, the more I appreciate how much work and creativity Cameron put into it. It's so easy to get sucked into that world and never want to come out, It's gotten to the point where when I went to see The Way of Water, the moment the film opened up to Pandora's forests and floating mountains, I had only one thought: "I'm home."
So that's how I went from an Avatar skeptic to a big fan, and now I try to defend both films when possible from the tidal waves of unnecessary hate it gets. I'm looking forward to seeing what Cameron has in store for the sequels (he better have something up his sleeve because does this franchise really need 6 or 7 sequels in a row???).

Another thing to take into account about Jake Sully being as generic as Luke Skywalker (and he isn't because being a paraplegic is enough to lift him out of generic territory since we almost never see that in movies) is that Sam Worthington is a better actor than Mark Hamill. Hamill didn't come into his own until his later years and the one time where he was allowed to show off how good an actor he's become was when he was involved in the absolute shitshow that was Disney Trilogy. Outside of that, he spends most of his time doing voice acting.
Worthington's had a fairly low key career but he hasn't been struggling to find work. In fact, I think he goes for more low key projects on purpose because the sky smashing success of Avatar interfered with his private life. Nevertheless, he's been consistently making live action movies ever since Avatar came out, a minimum of 1 per year and in 2010 he was actually in 4 live action productions. Hamill spends most of his career in a recording booth which, let's be honest, is MUCH easier than onscreen acting because you only need to do the voice. James Earl Jones initially refused to take credit for Darth Vader because he thought David Prowse was doing all of the hard work. There are some voice actors that I have MASSIVE respect for - the late, great Tony Jay AKA Judge Claude Frollo is one of them - but the mannerisms and expressions of the characters rely entirely on animation which means that the actor doesn't need to concern themselves with them. Live action performances rely just as much on expressions and body language as line delivery, and these mannerisms can vary from role to role, but voice acting consists entirely around SOUNDING right, not looking right. To quote Bender, voiced by the legendary John DiMaggio, another voice actor I have huge respect for partially due to his self-awareness; "You can work and be lazy at the same time. It's like being a voice actor."
If you think Jake Sully sucks then, for consistencies sake, you have to say that Luke Skywalker is dogshit.

The critique of Way of Water that I partially agree with is that people waited 13 years for James Cameron's passionate project to strike their imagination (like his movies in the past) only to get a very simple story about protecting your family streched over 3 hours. Even James Cameron himself openly regretted that he spent so many years making Avatar and he wished to have time to make more movies of different jenres. That being said, that still doesn't make the movie objectively bad.
