  • Can table legs be attached with magnets? Yes, but the mounting details matter quite a lot. Here we build two footstools to show the wrong way and the right way to go about it.

I'm glad I found this video and accompanying article. I had come up with the idea of using strong magnets to support a flip up convertible back seat cushion/ table in my camper. I thought the force to tip may be low but hadnt considered it to be as low as you guys found it to be. This will greatly help me in my design. Thanks! 😁

This is a crazy good idea. Was looking for a way to fold the legs to store the table. Brilliant! Neodymium magnets it is.😱😍

Nice for taking apart pieces of table

So, I've had an idea for modular worktops. This video has inspired me. At first I was thinking about using square 2'x2'x2" tops that could have magnets on each corner and they would just snap together. But probably a better idea would be to drill recessed holes with washers like you have done here only on each corner of a top piece and use dowels with magnets to link them together. How strong a magnet would I need to make this practical?

How thin do you think you could make the collar to still get these kind of results?

I am wondering that too. It probably matters how tight a fit it is but I'm going to try a design with maybe a half inch collar and work my way up if needed

I trying to make a small diner balcony table (assignment for school) but the leg chair with connection has to be a (glued) pin and hole connection so I'm trying to fing a loop hole because my parents want the table to be retractable. So I thought I cut the legs rights where the rules end (idk how to transalte rule, ukno the side under table attached to legs and table top) and theen make a hole and a pin with magnet. Soo it is that hard task or should I skip it? Sorry for english!

I wonder how deep the leg must be inserted in order to provide the required resistance? Could I just recess the washer into my butcher block top by 7/8" of an inch? How would I calculate this or would it just be a trial and error experiment? This is inspirational. Thanks.

It might not need to be as deep as we made it. If the hole and leg are tight, then 7/8" or 1/2" could very well work! Always good to do some testing, though.

What is the reason for adding the magnets?

Probably makes for easy assembly/disassembly. If the magnets were not there, it would need to be a press fit. In that case, it might be difficult to break down and pack away quickly without the use of tools.
