  • In the fourth episode of the Karting 101 series, I cover the basics of data analysis using the MyChron 5 and AiM Race Studio/Analysis software. We discuss how to get your data set up to make it actually useful to you, what some basic things are to look for on the measures graph, and how you can make changes based on what you find in your data.
Also, sorry for not capturing all the windows properly in the video. I had it set to capture window instead of my full display, so some things I'm talking about don't show up, but it should still be followable. This was my third attempt recording and editing this so I wasn't feeling like redoing the whole video. I'll make a note for the next one to fix it!

Absolutely amazing video, I took away lots of great notes so I can better understand my data during my next race weekend. Thank you for all your time putting this incredible series together, I have been learning so much watching Karting 101!

Thank you! Would you please add a comment on tire pressure tuning, and third axle bearing. Some drivers, including me, would love to hear in more details what a perfect set up kart of the different phases through a corner actually look like, not all that feels great is fast. your expert comments are much appreciated! maybe a next episode?

Just want to echo the other comments, and say thanks for the videos. My son and I are new to karting and recently started using the Alfano 6, so much data which seems pointless without knowing what to do with it, this video has already given me some points to take away and look at for his last race. One question I do have is about how you use the RPM to understand the gearing of the kart. My son is in cadets and runs a Honda GX 160, I would really like to know how to use the RPM data to make better decisions on which sprockets to run on the day.

Happy to hear the videos are helping!
For gearing, generally you're shooting for a max RPM at the end of the straight as your reference point. I can't assist specifically with the GX160, but we want to make sure we are using all of our powerband as much as possible. This max RPM number may vary track to track, but should be pretty similar across different circuits for your engine. The two ways to get more max RPM would be to add teeth to the rear sprocket, or carry more speed through the corner and then down the straight. If your driver isn't nailing their minimum apex speeds and are overslowing the kart, you'll find you need more rear gear to get the same max RPM. If your driver is very smooth and can roll a lot of mid-corner speed, you can drop teeth off the rear gear to help it cruise down the straight faster.

@@KorsasportKartingDevelopment Thanks for the response, really helpful. Are you still open to doing sessions to talk people through their data from Alfano systems? No problem if you are not just curious. I am not there yet as I need a new laptop (all done through phone at the moment)

Can you do a video using an Alfano? ;)

Would love to, but I have only used Alfano's software a few times. Maybe once I have more time with their product.
The good news is all the same analysis should apply with regards to what you see on the data and how you interpret that. Just a matter of a different interface.
