So sad that most of these are gone... I owned the Limerick schoolhouse in Ormsby, Ontario (2.5 hours north of Toronto) which was built in 1920. The prior owner to me had carefully restored it. It has wood floors and wainscotting and tin walls and ceiling, all original, with the original bell. It is frame, not brick. In Ontario, most were not in use past the 60s. The Glen Alda schoolhouse, not far away from mine, was turned into a community centre but retains no original features.

My father attended a one room schoolhouse in rural southern Alberta when he was a boy, and I have 2 of his schoolroom photos with him and his classmates and teacher from two different years.

My Mom and her lil Brother, our Uncle, attended on of these small schools. An older student would arrive earlier and stoke up the wood burning stove for heat. Sadly the school caught fire and burned down. The kids were then send to a school in the nearest town.
Theres now a sign/ plaque where the school stood.
The constant wind and no trees, shown in the video, would be brutual. Its no wonder many settled in or near the Coulees.
Again, another wonderful video. Thank you!

Yes. All too often that happened unfortunately. Here in Alberta there are still some old ones still standing. It’s my mission to document as many as I can this year!

I like videos of 1 room schools. I also own what once was a 1 room school. Lived here for almost 30 years. Love this place. I've never found out where it was before being moved here in 1922 though. I'm going to do some serious research after I retire in March 2025.

What a shame that with so much history and hard work to build the school it's just been left to rot. 😞

Makes for great photo and video though, plus a second chance to dig up the past! 😀

It would go a long way to preserving these places just by covering the roof with barn tin that's not expensive and damn well worth it
