This video is worth its weight in gold - the clearest information on the most notorious of tap steps. What a remarkable teacher he is.

"for 80 to 85% of students, just travel way way farther than you think you have to, and that will solve the problem". I've never heard this advice before but I cant WAIT to try it

This is very helpful. I would love to see this translated for one foot - like a maxi ford with pullback

Any advice on mastering single foot pull backs? I trained from the whole foot rather than just the ball, so I never did real pull backs. Pull backs on two feet are no problem but my single foot ones sometimes happen and sometimes don't!

Start from both feet with more weight on the left and then push off and do a pullback on the left landing only on the left. Gradually shift your weight to the right until all your weight is on the right during the push off and then after that start from only the right foot. Good luck. It's hard to explain the process in words.

Thanks Rod! That was a fantastic video! The 2 tips that helped me a lot were (1) long jumps backwards and (2) the 'whip'. I have been trying the pullback every so often, but so far I was only able to do them when starting flat footed. The tips helped me nailed it down and get the sounds even with no heels on the ground - my board at home only allows for 1 jump right now, but I bet I could do two if I had enough space. Now it is about repeating and getting it going with shorter jumps, until I can fit at least 2 in my board. =)
One other video that helped me understand the "whip" a little better visually was from Ryan C-Birch at ua-cam.com/video/3mHwqqik8Hk/v-deo.html but I liked that yours included the warning about not overextending the knees - I already knew about avoiding that from other (non-pullback) classes but it is always a great reminder.
My 2 cents on why the long jumps helps so much is because we stay in the air longer - just measure how long it takes between jumping and landing, it is indeed longer, it is just physics. That gives us more time to "process" all the required steps: jump, relax ankles, whip, tighten for landing as well as all the balancing involved. When the body learns it better there is less need to actively think about it, so it becomes easier to get them done quicker, which in turn allows for shorter jumps.

Glad to help! Interesting theory about the long jump - my hunch was it was biomechanical change that happens due to trying to cover more ground - perhaps a harder push and the feet staying closer to the ground since they have less time to go upward??? I like your theory too - maybe a combination of both??
