George Stevens Sr. was married to my grandmother's first cousin, Yvonne (Julia Rose) Howell. This video is fabulous, since I never met that side of the family. Thank you for posting!
George Stevens in his great career directed Barbara Stanwyck, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Jean Arthur, Alan Ladd, etc A great Director, my favorite Stevens film is the incomparable The More The Merrier with Jean Arthur. Mr. Stevens also directed the great western Shane, and also the splendid A Place In the Sun, I Remember Mama, Giant, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Diary of Anne Frank, etc. A great Director
Stevens won the Oscar for best director the year I was born. In the 1950s, he achieved as close to an American national epic style of film making -- from A Place in the Sun to Shane to Giant to The diary of ann frank
For once I could make out what one of the panelists was saying as the guest left, Dorothy Killgallen said "I'm looking forward to it" to which he replied "Thank you" By the way, G Stevens in being over-anxious to leave did what may of the guests on this show did, don't know why they were in such a hurry to escape.
True story. Originally he wanted Mickey Rooney to play Jack Wilson in Shane, but every time he walked into the saloon, he walked underneath the swinging doors.
I love these episodes from Whats My Line featuring famous personalities from the past. It was unfortunate that George Stevens last (I think) movie and one he put so much effort into -The Greatest Story Ever Told - failed to live up to expectations and did badly at the box office. The idea of using then current big name actors as cameos was a mistake and diminished the drama considerably. It should have been so much better, there is a lot to admire in the craftsmanship of this movie.
The "government" question came up because he has been a government employee in the past as a film producer, particularly during WWII. He did many movies of the concentration camps after liberation.
Interestingly, this appeared on TV exactly one year after James Dean, one of the stars of Giant, was killed in an automobile accident in central California.
RIP. What great director.

Alice Adams and Gunga Din--two of my favorite movies.
One of the greatest directors in an age of great directors. Shane is indeed the best Western ever made.
The great George Stevens.

Arlene really has it at "producer" - since this is NOT a mystery guest, identifying the line, not the game is the goal.

Do you have the rest that James Mason was on, either as a guest panelist or as a mystery guest? I just love to see his TV appearances.
Giant turned out to be a Great movie, and one of only three in which James Dean appeared.
This was on exactly a year after James Dean's death!
Is this the same George Stevens that died in the plane crash with Jim Croce?
Interestingly, this appeared on TV exactly one year after James Dean, one of the stars of Giant, was killed in an automobile accident in central California.
@Fenhalls Yes I noticed he didn't want to stay around and chat. I'm wondering if he's hiding something???
It's sad to think that this was aired a year after James Dean died.
