"Goodnight Mommie Dearest" *shivers*
JOAN CRAWFORD was an AMAZING person!! Lovers will LOVE and HATERS will HATE...
"thank god that child isn't your own"
Child: "the feeling is mutual"
A great lady. Her twin daughters adored her as did her grandson. She gave 95% of her money to various charities after she passed away, as well.
What a performance. She doesn't even blink once!
I know, right?💕😂
Wouldn't it be funny as hell that, in the middle of this Joan yelled out "CHRISTINAAAAAAAAA, DO BE QUIET. AND REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BED UNITL THAT BATHROOM FLOOR IS CLEEEEAAN!!!!!"
No?
This was funny! We could actually hear her saying it in her Faye Dunaway voice 😂 lol all jokes aside Joan Crawford was an incredible Movie Star ⭐ and an outstanding Actress! Joan Crawford was larger than life.
We still watch all her movies today
Maybe some some of those kids had cancer from their parent's second hand smoke. I'm sure during this taping, Joan and the entire crew were smoking up a storm in between takes. So when she says "Isn't that terrible, but what can I do about it," all I can think about is,..put down the smokes people!!!
I love people who rush to defend Joan...as if people actually know what went on in the Crawford family behind doors.
Joan always had a grand staircase from which to descend. It 's in Queen Bee. Harriet Craig and Mommie Dearest.
She went for a surprisingly long time without blinking there at the end....
Gotta say, she certainly knew how to portray a caring mother. A great actress indeed.
You put a lot of effort into assuming things about someone you never knew.
@@RJT80 You probably will never see this but i've seen you all over youtube defending Joan's honor and I just wanted to say it's great. I'm glad to know there's still people out there who realize that Christina was a spoiled brat who's offended people who have really been abused everywhere.
Craword's twin daughters adored her. Her grandson did too.
Shut your cakehole pussyface
@@RJT80 Sounds like you are in the same category. None of us know!
You can tell what a caring and loving Joan is and to raise money for children suffering from cancer touches my heart. This is obviously the "real" Joan," not the fictional character depicted in that Faye Doneaway disaster. What a lovely woman.
WE don’t know how she’s really was , that little girl knows how she’s was treated in that house that’s her story to tell. It’s like telling a child they were never molested. Some ppl can’t handle the true. She gave and raised money for publicity and to stay relevant during her washed up days in Hollywood . She was a great actress but I’m sure not a saint or perfect .
Christina said the movie was not accurate too! She said they wanted to turn it into a farce!
Even though Christina's story was very tragic I do half to say I'm a fan of Joan Crawford.
This is actually terrifying; those eyes, that fakeness... I'm shivering!
No wire hangers were harmed during the making of this commercial.
Such a wonderful woman and star. She exemplifies the gold standard that all mothers should attempt to emulate in their own common little lives.
😂😂😂😂😂
Your kidding right, she was a vile and abusive mother, wake up and smell what your shovelling you MORON.
Love how they use the underscore from "The Wizard of Oz" haha...
Who knew Joan was such a deep thinker!?
"Don't fuc with me fellas! Give to the Jimmy Fund!"
Thank you for posting this! Love that Joan.
Greateststarbyfar is incorrect in saying the twins got Joan Crawford's money. Joan left most of her 2 mil estate to charity. All the twins got was a little over 70k a piece. Now that doesn't sound like a loving, doting mother does it. Some people just don't want to believe that a movie star can be a psycho. What Christina does confirm (in interviews) is that when Hollywood made the movie - they did not always stick by the book. They over dramatized some parts - like the wire coat hanger scene. That is Hollywood's fault - not Christina's. She is totally believable - plus there are many that do back up her account. So sad.
+Kathie Kennedy Of course they over dramatized. Those weren't wire hangers. They were wood. She beat her daughter with wooden hangers. Seriously WTF?!
$75, 000 is roughly equivalent to $300,000 today. That's more than enough to secure a home for someone today. Back then it could have secured a few homes. Given JC's beliefs about charity being more important than having money you could never spend, it seems perfectly in character.
Why not just stop judging someone in the grave and that you clearly know little about? People's preoccupation with hating this woman is a becoming a mental disorder.
Kathie Kennedy . You are so right. If you really look at Mommie Dearest...and I mean REALLY LOOK AT IT...you can tell Joan really wanted to love Christina she just couldn’t get past herself. Sad.
You sound like gold digging leach - would 70k have been an insult to you as daughter? would you have wanted the money that went to charity ? People like you make me sick
" knowing your children are all cozy in bed for the night "
Except Christopher . Those restraints were a bit uncomfortable I bet
She sure was quite the actress. Knowing now how she really was she had us all fooled.
This was one of her favorite foundations...she gave time and money to support them as she did MDA and others.
I feel as though she is staring into the depths of my soul...
*shudders*
Christina, bring me the axe!!! :-) Oh no, I love Joan! Legend!!!
"this is the best time. Now I can go grab a bottle of whatever.."
No. Actually, Christina was allegedly writing it while Joan was still alive. So, if anything, Joan knew that the book was pending, and THAT was what motivated her to leave Christina and Christipher out of the will.
The music featured in this PSA was taken from Herbert Stothart's Oscar-winning score to "The Wizard of Oz".
So few have eyes that can shine as such in black and white! Joan is still the queen.
I love this
She lived in a Mansion in Brentwood, and her two kids had to share a bedroom?
That's a reach. There are plenty of reasons for young children to sleep in the same room.
That was extremely common up until very recently. Plus that was likely portrayed for convenience purposes for this short video. If they did in fact share a room, that would've been the best for them if they in fact lived in a toxic household and probably helped form the bond they had. It would've been rougher alone.
Little children weren’t generally spoiled rotten in those days, even by rich parents. That’s a “new age” screw up
i think i heard "goodnight mother dear" but STILL. gave me a chill.
@greeneyedstone42 From what I gather, its not so much the beating as the abuse, it was the emotional disconnect. She wanted a maternal connection from her mother and Joan didn't have the capacity to give it, so she did things the best she could. Sometimes a mother's best will never be good enough.
.....knowing your kids are safe in bed, all snug and cozy and tied from head to toe......
She scares me...notice how she hardly ever blinks, she just stares at you whilst she talks.
exactly. it takes guts to write something like this.
yes, common for a person suffering abuse to never stop talking about it. My sister still talks about aou past every time we get togather and i would tell the world if they would believe me and give me a platform. It's almost a sure sign of a hx of abuse. a form of PTSD I believe.
Did anyone else hear one of the children at beginning of the video call Joan Crawford "Mommie Dearest".
Philip Jennelle it was her son and he said "Mother Dearest".
JOAN CRAWFORD IS ONE OF THE MOST WELL-ROUNDED HUMANS THAT HAS EVER LIVED....PERIOD!!!!!
I haven't watched many Crawford movies, so I am rather neutral on her as an actress. It is true that she was praised as an actress and did successful films. Unfortuantely--for better or for worse, deserved or undeserved---because of her foster daughter's book, and especially the movie "Mommie Dearest", the average person today thinks of Joan Crawford as the world's ultimate Mean Mother.
I couldn't tell because of the way the quality sounds in the video.
0:18 The music is used in the Wizard of Oz during the Professor Marvel crystal ball scene.
But that's not the only reason why the book was title that name. Joan wanted her children to call her that. That's another reason why the book titled that. That lady calling on the phone on the Phil Donahue show was wrong to doubt Christina because for one thing this video was proof that "Mommie Dearest" is what her children were made to call her by.
@pogleswood2 Actually, the cleanser used in the film was Old Dutch.
you "think" you weren't there and neither were the twins, who came later so you cant in good conscious make those allegations at all
if you LISTEN TO HER INTERVIEW with Phil Donahue , she explained that Joans life changed alot with the twins
I'm old enough to remember Bing Crosby on TV. He always gave me the creeps. Glad and sad to hear that he was as evil as my intuition told me he was. Many new-rich parents, especially second-generation, treat their kids that way. Some of the second and third generation Vanderbilts were horrid to their children, and even cheated them out of their inheritance.
The background music from :44 to :54 is taken right from the soundtrack of "The Wizard of Oz". It's from the black-and-white Kansas scene when Dorothy had run away and was talking to the old circus guy in his trailer. Watch that part of "Oz" and listen to the music--- it's the same recording. Studios often did this, by the way--- a piece of background music would sometimes re-appear in another film, even many years later (as is the case here).
Joan Crawford's finest performance was playing Joan Crawford. That said, she was, in the words of George Cukor 'the ultimate movie star'.
@1radash Bull's eye my friend! You're so, so right!
Creepy indeed and it makes you realize what a great job Faye did, look at the way she moves her face and expressions, down to a T. Great Job.
It's a shame that it's been 55 years since this video was made and still no cure.
No, This is her home in Brentwood, on Bristol Ave. The Mommie Dearest house was actually built on a soundstage at Paramount. The outside of the house is actually next door to Ron & Nancy Reagans.
All I know is, Angela Lansbury said that the wire hangers thing was TRUE. She knew Joan Crawford.
Yeah that's what I was hearing too.
STUPENDA JOAN !!!!!
Is the house that was portayed in "Mommie Dearest"?
Great find. I wonder if it was her real home
Bon Ami was in the book. (I read the book).
Is this before or after Danny Thomas founded the St. Jude charity?
no one ever said god bless to me before going to sleep... I will say it to my children to make up for it
I just read a biography on Joan Crawford (a wonderful book) and she had one hell of a childhood, and as her friend Helen Hayes said "Joan was good at everything she tried, I just wish she didn't try and be a mother", I think she was messed up from her own childhood, oh well, another childhood tragedy, i love joan as an actress
Does the music sound a bit like 'Over the Rainbow'?
There are two sides to every story........don't believe everything you read. One thing is certain: Joan Crawford was one of if not THE greatest movie stars of the 1930's and 1940's....that is for what she should be remembered!
@SonnyJamesJefferson It's been some years since I saw Mommie Dearest, but I distinctly remember the Siskel and Ebert "At the Movies" showing a clip from Mommie Dearest, that incorporated the real commercial into the movie--especially the part where Crawford/Dunaway talks about "firm discipline" when it comes to children.
I collect old letters and signed photos of old silent film stars. I just started buying old joan crawford related documents on ebay. joan crawford was an obscure name to me. knew who she was, but to collect old original letters, its almost like I personally know her, in a sense. almost like my hobby has made me an insider. certainly these movie stars were real people, going to work to make money, paying taxes, paying bills, insecurities like regular people, including joan, I suspect
WHY CAN'T YOU GIVE ME THE RESPECT?!
And this is the voice/heart of a wicked person... Nice daughter Crissy was...
nooo moreee wireeeeee hangersssss
lmfao!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your interesting comments. I hate how almost everyone in showbiz is amused to have taken drugs. But, you know Joan didn't and Mae West didn't either. She's another interesting person...
Actually he says "Goodnight, Mother Dearest" Turn up the volume
@vasyazadov is that you, mrs chadwick?
They reproduced the first part of this commercial in the movie "Mommie Dearest".
I remember film critic Roger Ebert calling it "the creepiest scene ever in a movie".
@blue2765 Fay Dunaway, not Joan Crawford. It was in a book by her daughter. It may have happened, but not like the incredible performance from Fay.
Lolol, the music at the beginning, after the music box, when Joan starts talking to herself, is background music from from the Wizard of Oz!
They reproduced parts of this commercial in the film "Mommie Dearest", with Faye Dunaway as Crawford.
I remember film critic Roger Ebert, in his review of the "Mommie Dearest" film, calling it "one of the creepiest scenes ever".
Little did Joan know the truth came out years later about her. Mommie Dearest!
@2011iam4god What's so special about May 21, 2011?
Shame on the folks commenting here taking the word of a daughter who, in print and on film, brutalized the image of a mom already six feet under. We can't possibly learn truth from a biography and biopic to which Joan Crawford was unable to respond.
I KNOW! It's crazy.
Scary on so many levels.
@marshroanoke EXACTLY!!!
She only blinked twice during her final monologue - weird.
...and I think that THOSE blinks were just subtle seems in the film. In other words, I think that they were just the seems that were made by them making separate takes (of them, for whatever reason, starting and stopping the film again).
+Mark Murphy Maybe she was a robot.
im gonna do that to my kids
I am not sure actually believe everything Christina wrote. I read the book and it reads like a child hurt from being disinherited and neglected. I don't agree with her writing a book.I feel that Joan's memory will be tarnished for years to come and that is a shame.Child abuse is horrible but what could have been gained by sharing one side of the story. My mother was horrible and I would never out her by name in a book, I moved away and re-wrote my story by living differently than I was raised.
I agree with you there . They did not have a good relationship but she shouldn't' have written a book about it .
I try to be objective about as many things as possible . I still enjoy Joan's movies but I'm under no delusion that she could've won mother of the year awards .
What struck me as being a glimpse into how she was as a parent was the family Christmas interview
Why shouldn't she have written a book about her childhood trauma and pain? For some Hollywood star's reputation? Reputation matters more than abuse inflicted on children?
Yea, keep quiet since your abusive mother was famous..
Exactly! That was my diagnosis too. Still, I feel sorry for her in many ways. One can only imagine the hell she put those children through, but this is a psychological illness which causes much suffering amongst all classes of people and it sure as hell isn't funny to them.
Yeah it does thats what I was thinking.
I've always thought the same, if money was the motive she could have written a syruppy sweet lovey dovey book all the Crawford fans would have obught 2 signed copies of.
did she play the mother in cinderlla? She looks like her.
Laura Bush is the same. She never blinks. And she's just as scary.
I don't believe all Christina's allegations toward her mother either. But, I'm just curious, where did you find out she admitted to lying? Do you have a link to the source?
Well, in general, I would agree with you, but it's also very possible that Joan was very hurt by her two oldest children, to the point that nothing she said or did made any difference to them, so she was hurt, desperate for respect, and vengeful at the same time. And,, neither one of the children were minors. So, it's not like she put them in harms way by leaving them out of the will.
If Joan thought for one min. that either of her kids would starve to death w/o her money, she'd have done dif
Music is same music as "Wizard Of Oz" on the farm sequences.
Picture not clear
MAN, THOSE KILLER EYEBROWS!!
However the accusations that Christina made corroborate with things that others who knew Joan suspected about her, such as actress Helen Hayes.
I remember when the book first came out. Donahue did a show about it and they had a psychiatrist as a guest. The psychiatrist analyzed clips of Joan doing commercials (such as this one) and also interviews. He diagnosed her as borderline personality, who was probably abused herself as a child.
Knowing what we know now makes this extremely disturbing.
God bless you Joan Crawford, your a wonderful actress but a terrible mother.
Being a good actor can definitely have its evil side.
@1radash Leona Helmsley did the same thing..left nothing for the kids cuz they didn't respect her (why should any mother be obligated to leave their adult children money if they don't respec them?) Its not like Christina was a dependent child, she was a grown woman who could support herself. All do respect to your opinion though.
good for you--you've moved on with your life. I think Christina knew she could help thousands understand child abuse with her connection with a celebrity. No offense, but millions probably would not have read about your abusive parent--or mine for that matter (had they been abusive). But a luminous celebrity was found to have feet of clay when raising children. THAT grabbed people's attention--and it still does. Everybody's learning from this and that's good.
@1radash if my daughter pulled some major BS with me, I wouldn't leave them a dime either. Also, Christina was not a dependent when her mother put together the will, but a grown woman. Therefore she should not have expected her mother's inheritance to support her.
Actually, I think she blinks twice. Still, quite a performance!
