    Unless you want to be heard coming from down the street, if you get very efficient speakers you can use the factory amp, especially if you route the lower bass to a powered woofer. If you are concerned with the speakers being too low impedance, you can always add a bit of resistance. I know the original speakers had a 6 ohm load, but I am curious how low of a load the amp can handle without damaging it because if you didn't have Premium Sound and the factory speakers just ran off the small amplifiers in the head unit, it drove 3.2 ohm speakers. Otherwise, consider an better, dedicated power amp in the future. I know of a small, relatively compact amplifier from AudioControl (model ACM-4.300) that people have used behind the dash in these cars instead of the factory amplifier that is there so you don't have to route wires elsewhere in the vehicle.
    I would suggest using Infinity Reference speakers with the factory amplifier because they are very efficient and deliver nice, quite natural sound for a fairly low price. You can get the component version for the front and use an adaptor to fit the tweeters in the dash speaker location. The rear will need an adaptor/spacer/etc. to build space between the speaker and the grilles, and then pair those with the Infinity BassLink Mini powered (sub)woofer, which sounds way better than it should...the very deep, foundational bass in the lowest octave isn't really what it does, but it fleshes out the rest of the sound quite well, cleanly and with actual, tuneful bass instead of boomy noise.
    As you see, it's really the speakers that sound off, and not the rest of the electronics. The crazy thing is, the original six speaker Premium Sound that Ford put in Lincolns in the early '80s in (beginning in model year 1980) actually sounds quite good, so long as you actually have the speakers being driven by its external amp (as was done with the early Fox Mustangs with the separate switch for the amp if you had Premium Sound, but this was a much better sounding system)....its really the first time a car manufacturer put effort into good speakers and amplification.
    I found that if you have the regular (non-equalizer) Premium Sound system totally stock, it sounds best *tonally* with the fader centered, the bass at +3, and the treble at +2 (at least in a '91). It's actually decent sounding that way to me, but don't expect real bottom.

    I no longer have my scrapbook of what I did with my 92 hatchback..😞
    I competed in a couple of car stereo competitions with it... Maybe it was a little TOO MUCH. It was a concert on wheels...i had 32 speakers overall. I built out the door panels and kick panels ( I removed the dead pedal to make room for the panel on the driver's side) I also had some tweeters on the inside triangle where the mirrors were attached to. I had tweeters in the factory location for the dash (original 3 1/2) and then I removed the rear 5x7 speakers and made the same 4 1/4 midrange and 1 inch tweeters that were in the kick panels also reside in some custom panels behind the grills. I had 4 10" subs that took up the entire trunk under the retractable hatch cover. I COULD NOT make my doors look factory though... Haha! Had 4 5 inch midbass and 2 tweets in each door and the kick panels had 2 4 1/4 and 2 1 inch tweeters in each....
    Powered by Alpines.
    Miss that car....

      @mrupholsteryman 3 роки тому +1

      @@KASLCustoms I didn't mean to share (give to thief without my prior consent either) my stereo with THAT person either.
      Obviously they were in a rush. All they had to do was pull out the RCAs and unscrew the power and ground and speaker wire leads... They used wire cutters so they ONLY needed to take out the amp rack with the 4 Alpines in there. They even cut the cable to the radar detector that U had tucked the wire in behind the windshield trim. (So it wouldn't impair my vision)
      All cuz I didn't want to hand my remote to the place that was gonna fix the car after a girl ran a red light and 3 days later said I RAN IT.... Pizza delivery girl on route had a friend call 3 days later as an alleged witness. So many bad dominos in a row that was the demise to this car.😞
      I now have an 89 Vert LX that I wanna experiment with trying to make a free air (ish) baffle that will incorporate a new top well that will allow the subs to play at an angle facing in and somewhat up. When the top is folded back I want the subs to NOT hit the glass and they will still be facing slightly wedged forward cuz convertible cars are hard for bass reproduction and I ALSO don't wanna take up all the room in the trunk either. So....after ALL the OTHER things are done...stereo will be a little less over the top. As far as number of drivers goes. I may just make some decent kicks and put an 8 in each door for midbass...and a couple 10s in the rear for subs....or MAYBE 8's. I'm gonna make THIS car more about functional and still a nice presentation...
      I need to get my computer fixed cuz the gas wants to stay running and I THINK THAT may be the reason for the check engine light. I ALSO need to see if my AC is keeping a charge. Lot of other things that keep this car in back burner status. Haha!

    • @owlnswan4016
      @owlnswan4016 11 місяців тому

      Yes, that is the best thing to do with any vintage car head unit that has built in amplification...have a set of preamp outputs made so when you run the signal to an external, dedicated amplifier, it's not going through the built in amps. If you have the system in these cars with the equalizer, the head unit does not have a built in amplifier (this is why the system with the equalizer has a different amplifier...it has +15db of gain vs +6db of gain in the regular non-eq Premium Sound). I had this done for my '77 Lincoln.
      I have seen a small scale dedicated amplifier from Audio Control (and ACM-4.300) being used behind the dash in these cars, but I don't know how they secured it. It would give 50 watts x 4 channels using nominal 4 ohm speakers.
