Such rhythmical intensity, improvisation played with such conviction. Sylvain Luc, you are fast becoming on my list of all time great guitarists...no,make that all time great musicians because you have crossed the boundaries of conventional guitar technique. You play music from the heart...such an open channel to the muse that is music. Thank You.

Usually, jazz guitarists improvise with 1 or 2 strings, Sylvain does it with ALL 6! He can play guitar with the instensity of a keyboardist and the rythm of a drummer.

I love his emotions that he translates thru his guitar playing. He is not limiting himself and not discriminative to music.

I agree. I may not know as much as you do but I listen to them all (Stern, Scofield, Martino,...) and I have never heard anything like this! Good for us!

Agreed. I discovered Sylvain Luc 2007 through his continuous collaborations with Bireli. One particular concert was live in Marciac. In terms of guitar duets, the gig completely blew my mind! I'd hate to admit to anyone new sounding the gong that signals a new status quo for solo guitar. Scofield's signature is phrasing and angular impro; Frisell, under-statement; Metheny's compositions and innovations. These legacies will be theirs. Sylvain's Piccasso reincarnate.

The audience reaction to this playing is just pathetic. He's playing guitar like it was a piano and it is so difficult to do on this instrument.
He's stretched his technique knowledge and musicality beyond anything I have seen on the guitar before. You can tell it's improvised yet it has so much structure, so rhythmically tight and musical logic. Putting all these elements together on the guitar is so hard even for the best.
Listen to Scofield, Metheny or Frisell, none play solo like this.

It seems to be a quite small venue, probably at least 1/3 filled with guitar players who have to look for their jaws on the ground after having heard and seen such things could go through human fingers brains ears and hearts

@idletask I like what you say about his improvisational method, that is spot on IMO, I don't know La Foule, but i am definitely hearing Autumn Leaves, which is also a French Tune, maybe they are the same, I don't know.
I am just off to practice.

I thought that Paco de Lucia was the best guitarist in the world.
I may have to rethink it. :-)

    • @parityviolation968
      @parityviolation968 5 років тому +3

let paco have his flamenco crown... I mean, he certainly can do things Sylvain can't and vice versa. Sylvain certainly wears the experimental jazz fingerstyle improvization crown well...
and besides... We shouldn't force competition upon highly skilled musicians who found their own niches... For example, I couldn't figure out a "winner" between francesco buzzurro and Yamandu Costa... They are both phenomenal beyond human capabilities but also have their own individual styles in terms of technique that simply do not compare in an objective manner... It's music for pete's sake ^^

This theme can clearly be heard from 1:09
(and gets quite streched out while keeping its form afterwards) 😀

Kind of ...Martin Taylor on acid? I think I prefer the sober version.

  • @kulamdaparim

he is some kind of weirdo. I cant figure out for shit what is guiding him during his playing. is he going like "um lets play a million scale degrees then some million interchanges while moving thru a million keys and rhytmic ideas" kinda thing?
