In 1950, someone gave my family tickets to a concert of the Iowa State College Symphony Orchestra. The featured soloist on the program was violinist Elaine Kirk. She was eight! I was six. On the way home from the concert, I told my parents, "If she can do that, I can do that." They rented me a small violin and my first teacher was Miss Neimach - Elaine Kirk's teacher at Iowa State. From then until I went away to school, I practiced five days per week. My parents kept renting me larger and larger violins until I was read for a "full size" and then bought me one. When I went away to school, I put my violin in the closet in my dorm room and didn't take it out for a couple of months. When I did take it out, I discovered that I actually enjoyed playing it when there was no one to tell me to practice. I continued to improve my skill for another four years - by which time I was not yet half as good at playing the violin as Elaine Kirk had been when she was eight. Off and on since then, I've tried - unsuccessfully - to maintain my skill. I can still play simple tunes and do so two or three times a week on average.
