This was recorded in his home studio on his 26th birthday. It is a traditional song from his own country. It is about a soldier who is forced by the czar to leave his beloved country to fight in the war and his longing for his homeland.
Kazakh folk song In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. The burden of restocking was laid on subject nations. About 49 million hectares of fertile land were forcibly taken away during the war from Kazakhs. The owners were driven out into the barren wastes. Taxes increased form 3 to 15 times. For the needs of war, livestock and property were mass requisitioned. And finally it came to "requisition" of people. On 24th of June 1916, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilised for army and labour brigades in the war effort. This decree was the spark for the Kazakh uprising, although the underlying reason was Russian colonisation and the usurpation of Kazakh lands. Song "Samal Tau" tells about this sad events for young Kazakh in this difficult time. The song is about young, about 28 year old (a little over 2 mushels = 2 dozens born in the year of the cow = 1889) recruit walking from Samal village (close to Shalkar lake in West-North Kazakhstan) to Omsk, as he was forced to register for the Russian military according to a decree predating the revolt by a few months. He was walking for 15 days and almost reached Omsk. (Samal) - a gentle breeze, a mountain breeze, bearing the evening or morning cool. The word "samal" itself is associated with something pleasant, bearing enjoyment. Therefore, Kazakhs woman often have a female name Samal. тау (Tau) - mountain, hill.
I love this type of music, very primitive. Dimash is the perfect singer to bring it to the forefront. Also Diana Ankudinova ( the song Rechenka in particular) does a fantastic job singing this kind of music. I hope our collective minds will be opened up to more different music in the future . Dimash is already playing a big role in this.
This was recorded at home by Dimash and submitted to the Jazz Festival. The instruments in the beginning are representing wind, rain, wolves and dogs, because the song is about a forced overland march of able bodied Kazakh males to leave home and assist the Russians in World War 1. The singer is lamenting that he doesn't know if his elderly parents will survive without him there to help them. He also did a version of "S.O.S." for the festival.
How much you cry and say that this is a song with deep meaning. You cannot understand this pain, you just cry over the music and do not feel the pain of the Kazakh people. In those days, 8 million Kazakhs died because of the Russians.
The ''back story'' only serves to enhance the performance. We Americans, with our petty grievances, could learn a thing or two from this young Man's love of his Homeland & knowledge of it's History.
I cannot adequately express how much I love this song. It moves me in so many ways, all of which are beautiful to experience. So few reactors (vocal coaches and regular people) give this particular song a proper listen. Imagine my excitement when I saw you were doing it. If you notice the riff of the kobyz at the end of the intro…it sounds like “Ohh…Ho oh oh”. That riff is a continual theme in many of his songs. Every time I hear it I buckle in. I watched my first video of yours (totally different artist) and I can’t stop watching them. You really are present and it’s so refreshing. Thank you Nina.

BRAZIL - Certainly Nina, it is a magnificent and brilliant performance. We love traditional Kazakh folk music. Usually based on real events like SAMAL TAU where Dimash is a master at taking us on this journey with him, just close your eyes and feel your mind loosen. It's one of my favorites.
Dear Nina, now that you reacted to Dimash again I am asking again like when you were baking Live to react to his recent new recording of Qaragym-ai. It is a tribute to the composer who was also one of Dimash's teachers. Dimash thought of him like a grandfather and he died from this virus in July. They show a picture of him during the song and You can feel the emotion pouring out of Dimash as he sings. Just be sure to have tissues ready! 🎶👱♀️👗👠👠💓
Nina, you must review/analyze Karagym Ai from the 60th Anniversary of Kazakh Concert in October. Dimash dedicated this performance to his beloved teacher and mentor, Kenez Duisikeev, who passed away in July due to COVID-19. Mr. Duisikeev composed the music about a father’s love for his daughter who is about to get married and wondering what the future holds. Michael Zech’s channel has the lyrics in English for your perusal. Then for the review, go to Dimash’s channel.
so grateful for sharing and presenting kazakh culture, tbh this performance is about the mountain called Samaltau and he was definitely able to make us feel the vibe

Samal Tau is a historical song. 1916... World War I...The Russian Tsar issues a decree on the draft of Kazakhs aged 19-39 years in the army. Samal Tau is the song of these recruits. The place where they came from was called "Samal Tau" in the North Kazakhstan region. The name of the author is not preserved in the memory of the people. The song contains the words: “We wander tired, very tired for 15 days, almost reached Omsk. Samal Tau, where I was born and raised, was left behind. Elderly parents stayed at home. How are they supposed to live without me? ". The song also has information about the age of the author. He is a little over two mushels old. He was born in the year of the cow, which means in 1888, so he is 28 years old. (Credits to Dimash Multicultural Club on Facebook) Knowing this listen to the song again you literally can see the soldier wandering to Omsk leaving back his home country not knowing if he will see it again. Howling wolves, cry of eagles, raindrops falling down on the soil, wind blowing in the Great Steppe, Dimash’s voice echoing in The Valley... it‘s a masterpiece. Atmosphere created in his homestudio just with a few instruments and Dimash sitting crossed legs on a stool.
Dimash LOST two of his beloved MENTORS in july to COVID19... He has just released a tribute where he sings a piece written by his longtime mentor and beloved friend - "Qaragym ai". PLEASE react... It's totally and utterly heartbreaking... Love and Peace from Dear in Sweden! 🙏❤🙏❤🙏
Liking the reactions, super informative and you hear EVERYTHING, awesome. Please react to some of Dimash’s more recent performances. Autumn Strong and/or Know (vocalise) from his 2020 Arnau Tour in Kiev. Hope to see your reactions have a good one

I love your reactions because you not only focus on the vocals but also on the music aspect as well. I think that's very important too. I like to see reactions of people like you (musician/vocal coach) because we can understand what Dimash is doing in his performances and the important role it plays every instrument in the song.
👉Because of the pandemic, the annual Tokyo Jazz Festival took place online. Dimash sings 2 songs, “SOS” and “Samaltau”, live in his home studio. This song, very well known in Kazakhstan, was written when the Tsar forcibly recruited the young men from Kazakhstan during the First World War. They marched endless distances. Many did not understand what to do in a foreign country. Their fields withered and their wives, children and elderly parents were left alone. The Tsar, then the Soviets, attacked the country and harassed, recruited and decimated the population. In 1934, after a great famine, 2 million Kazakhs had survived. Today 18 million people live in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 70% of them Kazakhs, 19% Russians and other ethnic groups. Salmatau is a kazakh folk song! It a kazakh soldier singing while he is marching far away of his country leaving his elder parents! In WWI Rusia used kazahk men to dig trenches!
Others have already explained what the song is depicting. That final reverb shout is the conscripted soldier's last heart-wrenching cry to his beloved mountains, echoing off of them, before he quietly resigns himself to marching on to his duty and unknown fate. It is my favorite song of his by far, as well, because of the subject, the melody, the instruments. Wah!! And once I was familiar with the story of the song, my appreciation on the second watching was enhanced.
This is traditional song. Although his presentation is again special. Because of Covid Tokyo jazz festival was this year online, so he is in his home studio (if I’m not mistaken). But I love it because it was so personal ... exactly... he was not on big stage, and it has different charm.
Samal tau / Breezy mountain Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake, What my life is going to be as soldier? Comes to my mind over and over again My poor land, where my navel-cord cut, washed me.
I am not riding, I’m trudging, Even slower, just drag myself. It’s been about fifteen days On way. I’m approaching Omsk.
My age is double mushel, from year of Cow. The Fate has swept me away, far from my home, Samal tau, my motherland is left behind, We’re just a foal-herd that has lost its pastures.
I have father and mother, They both would reached elderly age. I was compelled to make this song By the grievous year of sixteen.
Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake, What my life is going to be as soldier?

Understated for Dimash anyways!😃 You should really check out one of his latest performances titled "Qaragym-ai", It's stunningly heart breaking tribute performance to a mentor of his who past in July as a result of COVID.
This is a song about a soldier going to war who does not know if he will see his home. And the sounds at the beginning of the performance are the voices of wild animals. If you find yourself in the Kazakh steppe at night, you hear such sounds, it may well be that this will be the last thing you will hear in your life.

She really needs to react to that and she does need some tissues.
Please react ,the song is beautiful 🥰🇧🇷
BRAZIL - Certainly, handkerchiefs ready, because you can see Dimash with moist eyes, the emotion, the sadness he goes through is so true and intense.
Dmash ❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Genius
You put in words what I’m feeling
I LOVE DIMASH! I LOVE BRAZIL!
Dimash alga!
Thank you so much! This is actually my all-time favourite of Dimash's performances - simply stunning...!🤗
My 85 year old sister and I love your reactions and analyses, especially on Dimash. As others have mentioned, we would love your input on qaragym ai. You are the best. Take care and God bless
This song of Dimash is in my top 5 favorites. Loved your reaction and analysis, well done 👏🏻
"Tu Vas Me Détruire" DUET Dimash + Sundet
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier,
You keep coming into my mind from time to time,
My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised
I wasn't riding, I was walking,
Even slower than walking,
Been strolling for 15 days
In the direction of Omsk
I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of Fate, I went farther away
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind
From the hollow field, we are the only ones
I had parents,
Of progressed age,
Since this song was written,
It's been 16 years.
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier
NINA very good comments as usual DIMASH still incredible amazing .Thanks for this beautiful moments.Big KISS from PARIS
Hi Nina, thank you for reaction.
Yes we agree Nina 🙂
Thank you nina, loved your reaction and interpretation of the song
Thank you, for putting this so well! :)
👍👍🙏🙏
You REALLY need to watch Qaraǵym-aı -- it's just him and a pianist.

@@aravind5862 of course me too love all his songs, but still I have some that I love more than other songs ❤️
I highly recommend you to react to ''Queen Medley'' by Dimash and Super Vocal Boys. I know you like ''rock Dimash'' just like me :))
Amazing
👍👍
Magnificent performance invoking the what must have been tremendous emotional personal trauma as a result of the uprising.
In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. On 24th of June 1916, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilized for army and labor brigades in the war effort. This decree was the spark for the Kazakh uprising, although the underlying reason was Russian colonization and the usurpation of Kazakh lands.
Tokyo Jazz Festival - 24/05/2020
Performed by Dimash online during Live Stream Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020. Due to COVID-19 lockdown, the festival changed the format and was fully done on-line.
Pièce of art love it so so much 💕 merci 🌹🇫🇷

MARINA HAS A NEW SINGLE MAN'S WORLD
That was Amazing And Beautiful. He’s Incredible
Thanks
I love your reactions because you not only focus on the vocals but also on the music aspect as well. I think that's very important too. I like to see reactions of people like you (musician/vocal coach) because we can understand what Dimash is doing in his performances and the important role it plays every instrument in the song.
Hi Nina, for a similar kind of sitting down performance, please react to the most recent “Know” at the Kiev concert this year. He was mesmerising
👍👍👍👌👌👌👏👏👏👏

👉 Samaltau (names a beautiful place. In Kazakhstan, many women's names have 'samal' as the first syllable)

Dimash- Uptown Funk. Please
Salmatau is a kazakh folk song! It a kazakh soldier singing while he is marching far away of his country leaving his elder parents! In WWI Rusia used kazahk men to dig trenches!
🕊💌🥰💐
Yees😅😂😂Nina Schofield
Has been goosebumped
Dimash= Shaman
If this is not innovation I don't know what is
You should do a reaction video to the SOS Tokyo Jazz version in the same setting.
Love your reactions.. You should react to vocalise next.. Its amazing.. One of my favorites..
Dimash opera 2 please....
Thank you for your great analysis/reaction! I LOVE this performance!
This is traditional song. Although his presentation is again special. Because of Covid Tokyo jazz festival was this year online, so he is in his home studio (if I’m not mistaken). But I love it because it was so personal ... exactly... he was not on big stage, and it has different charm.
Samal tau / Breezy mountain
Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
What my life is going to be as soldier?
Comes to my mind over and over again
My poor land, where my navel-cord cut, washed me.
I am not riding, I’m trudging,
Even slower, just drag myself.
It’s been about fifteen days
On way. I’m approaching Omsk.
My age is double mushel, from year of Cow.
The Fate has swept me away, far from my home,
Samal tau, my motherland is left behind,
We’re just a foal-herd that has lost its pastures.
I have father and mother,
They both would reached elderly age.
I was compelled to make this song
By the grievous year of sixteen.
Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
What my life is going to be as soldier?
this is the performance from dimash ...
If you want more performances like this you can react to his song qarqyim ai which been released only recently. Liked ur analysis tnx.

Great reaction/analysis Nina! I really love Dimash's "understated" performances too. Understated for Dimash anyways!😃 You should really check out one of his latest performances titled "Qaragym-ai", It's stunningly heart breaking tribute performance to a mentor of his who past in July as a result of COVID.
👍👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋🇰🇿
Insane! Please react to Gabriel Henrique from brazil!
Baddest language is English language. This is real 💯 all of the world's.
This is a song about a soldier going to war who does not know if he will see his home. And the sounds at the beginning of the performance are the voices of wild animals. If you find yourself in the Kazakh steppe at night, you hear such sounds, it may well be that this will be the last thing you will hear in your life.
Haha! True, though...
He is working in a Kazakh folk album, we gonna let you know when it is released ☺️ like your reaction, thanks ❤️
