I relate to the quitting MMA thing. I did kickboxing for 2 years, won my first amateur fight, went into MMA, and one day in sparring just go knocked out. Was bad for a few days after getting confused and forgetting shit. Sparred a couple weeks later and got rocked with a fairly light shot. Asked myself the same questions you did. Gone into Judo now.

If you fix your tooth I'm gonna follow you for days, find out what your favourite food is, and then one day you're gonna walk outside your front door and see that specific food item sitting on your doorstep. You'll bite into it, but you realize too late that it's actually a brick painted like your favourite food, and now instead of having one messed up tooth, you'll have no teeth at all

Thanks for mentioning something about cutting weight. I'm a 42 years old Purple belt. Training out of Gracie Barra in Chino California. One of my sons is 13 years old. Were both going to compete on October 5th in the Gracie Barra world Summit 2019 competition. I'm currently 208 pounds. I wasn't sure if I should stick to the this weight or try to cut down to 195. I used to compete a lot when I 1st started training and actually did well, placed in all except 1. I used to weigh about 270+. The last time I competed I weighed in at 165. I felt a little faster. But I noticed I was lacking in strength. So, I think sticking to this weight I would feel a little more comfortable, stronger and can concentrate more on training and less on cutting. Anyway, what you said reminded me of my past mistakes and the way I would push myself. So thank you, I appreciate your advice.

I agree with you on the leaving MMA part, I am a former professional MMA fighter (3 pro fights) and I left it to start Gi BJJ. My heart wasn't in it and I always loved grappling. Now after a year and half I am a purple belt and compete regularly. I am so happy I made the move and my quality of life is much better training Gi then getting punched in the face everyday. Just be yourself chewy, everybody has flaws, no matter how big, or small they may be, my teeth are in pretty bad, and it doesn’t matter to me and neither the people I care about, and. That’s all that matters. You’re doing an amazing thing here man, I’ve been in a really bad place in my life, I’ve always been interested in mma and fighting, then my life went down a really bad path for a long time, drugs, crime, violent, terrible things, and recently lost custody of my only son, but I’ve been watching you’re videos and it’s gotten me to want to start putting my life in order, and even to get back into mma, more exclusively, BJJ, I feel like it will give me some structure in my life, something that I also happen to love, I don’t make very much and the only legitimate Bjj class I could find was around an hour long drive, because there’s only like “ninja academy’s” and other fake mma around my area, I’d just like to ask if you have any words of wisdom for me, like, do you think it would be worth it?

I had the exact same chipped tooth! I was a competitive freestyle skiier and on a training day a friend and I were skiing the cliffs off Fraggle Rock at Blackcomb. I dropped 20+ feet right into a well-hidden bomb hole, dead stop, chin into my knee, pulverized my tooth and made a hell of a bloody mess. By the time I skiied myself to the First Aid hut my nice new team jacket was DRENCHED red with blood. Shitty shitty day.

If you're seeing your dentist regularly and your chipped tooth doesn't have any sharp edges that cut your tongue or lip and the chip is not getting worse, "knock yourself out", do what ever feels good to you :-) I have a front tooth that was hit when I wrestled back in the day that eventually needed a root canal, but it's still hanging in there. Best to you!

I know I'm super late to this. But I try to never judge people on their looks because usually people have their own amazing backgrounds and struggles. If you still care at all, my mom has a cap for her chipped tooth in the same place. She had a spill on a bike when she was younger. I say all this to say, as she has gotten older, that tooth's health has declined (not rotting or anything) and it has become more and more sensitive. The cap has helped resist nerve damage and decay, and it would cause her so much more pain without it. It finally broke off after a few decades and she was in so much pain for the 2 days it took to meet with the dentist.
As a future health thing, you might consider having it capped again? Although being active in BJJ you've got a lot more chances to just break it off and possibly make it worse, so I can understand that. It's not causing you any discomfort and you don't feel self-conscious about it, so nothing really needs to change. You've been very helpful while I begin BJJ and I wish the best for you!

is a sign of caring about Your own body. The same way You train in order to improve your overall fitness and health,

Gap in your smile is so big, I don't know if I should smile back or kick a field goal. Lol. I also happen to have a chip on the same tooth you do. I had to wait a weekend to get it fixed and the boys on my brother's baseball team kept telling me that joke. Looking back, it's hilarious. I did get a partial permanent cap put on mine as the root was exposed. It's made for some very interesting jiu-jitsu moments all because I'm always looking out for my mouth. Leave your teeth, it's a hassle to keep up with the cover ups, especially if you're a coffee drinker like I am. Thanks for the fun video!

Your tooth could be fixed with a full jacket porcelain crown(not a veneer). That would allow you to not need to wear a guard that is supposed to protect a "Filling" from chipping again which is common for Anterior Incisal restored tooth. The crown would be the best long time solution that would secure your tooths appearance for the future.

I wouldn’t make fun of you though because you seem like way too much of an awesome genuine guy who really cares about his students and even the people you’ve never met who watch your videos. For the record, though, if you fixed your tooth you could get a custom made mouth guard from just about any dentist, clear or in your favorite colors, and it would fit so well you could talk and drink with it, and breath well too. Not very bulky at all. That’s what I wear when I spar. I’d make you one if you were ever out towards Western North Carolina. Only thumbs up from me !

It’s funny. I was a very competitive bowler (qualified for the Jr Olympic team in 2002). One of the guys I bowled with was called “Rhino”. He’s a pro bowler now, still under than name. His real name is Ryan, but he won’t answer either because he’s so used to “Rhino”! 😁👍

Get the chipped tooth bonded. It doesn't cost more than a filling and looks perfect. Dentist prefers caps because more expensive but bonding holds fine.

In regards to your tooth, similarly I have a bump on my head (runs in the family). People ask about it and I say: “yeah I was in a motorcycle crash and they had to bolt my head back together.” Motorcycle crashes seem to be cool.

Question here. You talked about the semi loss of vision you had, or the blue spot. I have gotten the same spot a few times after MMA class (sometimes after a hard BJJ class). Not sure if this means I should stop training? or fighting? Or just have it checked out (again)?
    Any advice would be helpfull?

Last year at school, a kid threw a small bit of solid timber at the ceiling fan, and it flung and broke my front tooth in half. It exposed the nerve and took a while to fix and now it looks normalish. Now I wish I left it chipped so I could be like the one and only CHEEEEWWWWWWIIIIEEEEEE

Yep I have one chip , and one on the rear side broke off. Both came from mma/ wrestling etc. Wear A Mouthguard.. If it don’t bother you I wouldn’t worry about it. I too have had it repaired only re- damaged from grappling...👍

Ah same outlook preferring the safety and extra tool exploration of grappling, since doing the stand strike class session fallen blacked out concuss not knowing what strike happen later mentioning as a _"swift power house round kick in head"_ and next time doesn't make any differ getting black eyed even after mentioning to go light and repercussions of dizzy bike ride home & less responsive chat to neighbour as its *"Brain-Trauma"* worrisome as the worst of all being not worth sacrificing losing your mind over it - into never being the same again as -"over flown the cuckoo's nest"- so to speak (+) my utmost hobby is mind sports into *"Speed-Reading & Memorizing-Feats"* Therefore if I'm doing strike/MMA only to do the technical training without sparring just to make that fight awareness, means that I only fully spar within grappling arts as spoken for in agreement.

I know this is an old vid but the teeth fit the nickname. They are part of your whole youtube persona. No way get it fixed. Also concerning quitting mma, I totally get it. I used to box when I was in my late teens into my late 20s. I am pretty short 5' 7", very stocky/muscular and at the time fought at 150 at like 4% bf, walked around 170ish so I was pretty huge for the weight class. Needless to say I fought a lot on the inside and relied a lot on my power to smash people with body shots, get their hands down and then go upstairs. I loved it but I got hit quite a bit and started getting headaches after about 5 years. Ended up quitting because it scared the shit out of me. I have been thinking of trying a jiu jitsu class the last few years because I miss training, fighting and all that goes with it so much. Anyway, I know how it feels getting damage from strikes, it's really scary.

I fell on my face when I was 2 so my right front tooth was black. When my new tooth started growing in around 8 or 9 I had to have the dead tooth removed. I was in a hot tub about 2 weeks after my new tooth was fully developed and my head was dunked under the water, but I hit my new tooth on the tub. I have had a chipped front tooth ever since. I have only had a good front tooth for about 2 weeks of my life. I chipped the tooth next to that tooth about 2 years later. I would never cap them.

"The day was raw; snow was falling; the troops had not yet eaten their morning meal; yet, though they had been under arms for several hours, he pushed them across the fords of the Trebia, with the water breast-high and icy-cold. Arrived on the farther side, the Roman soldiers were so chilled that they could scarcely hold their weapons. Hannibal was ready to receive them. His men had eaten, rubbed themselves with oil before their camp-fires, and prepared their weapons."
