ON WATCHHOUSE:
Dearest Friends:
We’re very excited to share some foundational news today-our band is now called Watchhouse. It’s a new name to carry this music you know as Mandolin Orange into the future. We’d love to tell you a little more about it, and share our new video and song, Better Way.
Watchhouse comes from a memory-a place where I spent memorable, secluded, and meditative time as a teenager. During those same years I learned how music wasn’t just something that happened. It’s a place, it’s gravity (Strawberry Fields was the song that did it). It was an escape, and I began spending all my time there. I wrote song after song, and found someone to share it with when I met Emily.
This past year has been the first time we’ve stayed still since we were 21, and the pause gave us the opportunity to sit with ourselves and set intentions. We have long been burdened by the dichotomy between our band name and the music we strive to create-if you’ve heard the songs, you know they are personal. Now that we can see a future where music is a shared experience again, we're defining the space we share with you on a stage or in your headphones, and making it one that welcomes our creativity and anyone who wants to listen.
We are lucky that Mandolin Orange means something to many people, and have no intention of leaving behind our older material. It’s as important to us as ever, and we can’t wait to bring it back to your ears as Watchhouse, alongside a brand new album that we're particularly fond of (news soon!). Thank you for hearing our music-we owe something to anyone still reading this and can’t wait to continue this journey with you.
With love and gratitude,
Andrew & Emily/Watchhouse

Here's to a new beginning, Andrew & Emily! Names may change. Times may change. How music affects us never changes. As a man in the last third of his life, I've heard a lot of music over the decades. Yours is some of the best I've ever heard. Keep touching our hearts and souls, and we'll keep listening. 👍💖🎸😎
Nicely put. So true.
@@kimberlaw5934 Thank you. 👍👍👍
Well said!
Well put - and clearly someone who has good taste in music, judging by the Dark Side photo. Cheers.
@@Sad_Bastard_Noodles Thank you, Jawad. 👍👍👍
Shocked by the name change. It was one of my favorite names to reference. However, talent supersedes a name and I will listen to Emily and Andrew always. Cheers and Wellness
Well alright. The only constant is change. Mandolin Orange or Watch House, y’all still make incredible, transforming, heartfelt music. 🙏🏼
Yep, absolutely love it. They could damn near be singing the phone book, but it's how it all comes together........music, instruments, voices.....God is so good!
“Buried in your phone for hours, what a waste of the day” - What powerful words and what beautiful music! You guys are fantastic! ❤️ alright, phone down and eyes closing now to just soak this music up
The tension in the extended outro to resolve is stunning sonic tightrope that the band walks.
If you listen you can feel why they changed the name. This is different. If this is the start then I think we're in for something special the next few years.
Definitely!
Mandolin Orange, or Watchhouse, or whatever you want to go by, keep making wholesome, heartfelt, and sincere music and I will keep listening. This tune is spacey, it's different, it scares me a little that you are changing. And yet change is exciting and I like this direction. Don't know why but Khalil Gibran comes to mind. "And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief." I grieve for the passing of Mandolin Orange and for the joy of things since passed, but am overjoyed at the birth of Watchhouse and what new moments will bring. "Like the seeds of the pines when the forest burns, they open up to grow and burn again." Love you guys!
Brilliant referencing of their own lyrics. Well done.
I dig it. I dig it deep.
I love your older music and have seen you in concert, but the vibe of this song took me beyond the words. Count me in for wanting more.
Wow! Really liking this band, New to me. Both are really good singers, songwriters. Melody, Harmony and emotions, Love it ❤️
I love most of the music you have done from mandolin orange to watchhouse. this song is absolutely amazing
Can’t say I’m all that impressed with new song, Better Way. Hope future songs are better
Change is what makes life worth living. Thank you for reminding me of that today... if Mandolin Orange can change and grow, so can I. As a HUGE fan of Mandolin Orange and now Watchhouse, I cannot wait to see what lies ahead on our respective new paths.
❤️
Welcome Watchhouse ! I’m excited for the next chapter in your music , thank you for including all of us :)
I think this is actually one of the best music videos ever made. I keep watching it over and over
We need more of Watchouse (Formerly Mandolin Orange) in our daily lives. Thank You for making such great music 🎶 🎵
I’m not a big “ music video “ fan but this is at an entirely different level! The use of simple lines with sound is inspired, absolutely outstanding!
This should be award winning, the combination of the band and these amazing graphic interpretations is fantastic!
I love that you’ve had the opportunity to STOP, a rare gift born from a tragic circumstance. Growth means change, change take courage, congrats!
I hope being parents is everything you’d hoped it to be! Thanks for the distraction, well done, again!
how could anything be better than this? mind completely blown
Watch House has been shifting for quite some time, to me, it still sounds like them, a natural evolution.
I'm sure I can learn to cope as long as you promise me you will never stop making your incredible music! love to you both!
My father sings opera and holds his own quite well in the folk singing realm, playing his Martin as he goes. So I played this for my Padré; told him of all the songs collectively recorded, and purely accepted through the doorways of my heart, this song, has through the panels of His heart(I pray we know who He is), and ever-so gently moonwalking in and through the doorways of my father's heart, is working to bring us all together as one heart prevailing and seeking life as one. I'll be honest, it's not the words, but the chords, the progressions, the harmonies that lift that passion within us to it's new and enthusiastically united, hand-held heights untouched by ANYTHING normal. Good stuff.
Been a mandolin orange fan for years, once drove five hours to catch you live at the Brit festival in Jacksonville Oregon. Best wishes for the coming years. Just hope you don't forget the music that made me such a fan. I'm sure you won't.
Nice new song ! , I am a madolin player and about 3 years ago another mandolin player turned me on to you all and I am so grateful . I love your alls songwriting and I am constantly sharing those amazingly real story songs with others. I enjoyed you all at Railbird in 2019 and I am going to louisville to see you all again at the Iroquois theatre, can't wait. Blessings
I discovered this great duo during Covid and they delivered something real with every listen. To start out in a new direction with a new name at this junction of change is perfect timing. Looking forward to hearing more new material, please keep it coming ☀️
The awesome beauty and message we sorely need in today's world.
WatchHouse will continue to be on my play list. Love your sound, your insightful lyrics and your song selection.
I heard about it this morning.
At first I was shocked, then even kind of angry. I’m such a fan, I feel like I have some brand ownership of Mandolin Orange. That’s a heart thing for me.
Then I got your email.
Good for you.
You are artists and this is who you want to be and it really is your brand and I’m cheering you on.
One fan, embracing Watchhouse.
Thank you for your music. That’s what we are in love with.
After seeing this video, just imagine where they're going to take us! I'm sure that we're going to love it.
I felt the same. I look at Watchhouse as the commercial arm of Mandolin Orange. They're just trying to push through to put that third plate of food on the table, and who can blame them? MO are still in there though, and i'm sure they'll always turn up at the live shows. I'm sure they'll stay true to their roots, and hopefully Emily will be true to hers again soon ;-)
The end of this song sounds like Xanadu.... I absolutely love it
Wow. So much beautiful texture in this song on so many levels... What an amazing band. Thank you!
I've been an MO fan for a long time now and cherish all the music and memories. Very much looking forward to what the new Watchhouse coat of paint will bring. As long as Andrew & Emily are behind it, I'm sure it will be most excellent! See you on the road soon?
By farr the best rythmic strings and percusion song i've heard period.
Found out about Mandolin orange about a year ago and love those songs emily, andrew and friends have made and performed all these years.
Gives me tender hope that soulmate love can spark such beauty., even if oftentimes the creating comes from deeper aspects of pain in life's journey.
And for this song i can only say it's way deeper next level, beyond, thanks for such a beautiful song, new vibe, new perspective, new name., keep enjoying., good things will come from this🏃♀️🎻🪕🧲
Cannot stop listening to you, no matter what you call yourselves.
Love this ❤
That was very cool! Loved it!❤
For a minute there I thought I heard some Strawberry Fields. Thanks for the new music, video, and amazing sounds.
Fresh and magical just as Mandolin Orange always was. Godspeed on your reset as a band. Emily and Andrew you are artists of the highest order so look forward to seeing you again in concert on the road someday! 👍
Beautiful. Thank you! Embracing the change and I hope it sees you some grand fortune. I’ll be there when live music comes back into our lives.
Marvellous in every way
Happy to support the guys with whatever name they choose to play under
What’s in a name? Now their a band instead of a duet. So the evolution, continues. Moving forward is all we can do.
I get it! You discovered shroomsssssssssss!!!! Far out man!
Please dont say this is the direction your going in
@@dallasorr1794 why? Every great band/musician goes through a metamorphous. I've been waiting for this................
It has been amazing to watch this magical band come together over the years. A true powerhouse Watchhouse is on the international musical consciousness. We feel you deep in our hearts. Thank you
This song has been playing 'round and around in my head since first listen. It's catchy, it's timely, the harmonies are beautiful (as always). And the video! Innovative and fun to watch.
YES YES YES YESSSSS!!!!!!!
We just bought tix to your Berkeley concert! See you in September!! :) Love from California
This is crazy good. I love what the year of stillness did to you guys! Chill bumps.
Whatever the name, with Andrew & Emily at the helm you know it will be awesome. Like people, music has to evolve. Their sound is evolving and I look forward to the new direction!
So I s'pose I'm new to this folk scene, though I found Greg Isocov at least 5 yrs ago. Love this duo, pretty sure Andrew's a genius, his lyrics.....unorthodox, but mysteriously beautiful. Couldn't figure out how to ingest this song at first, the chord progressions and all, but here I am doing my thing, hung up, just plain out stuck on this song, applying it to every aspect of my life. Tears, smiles, hair standing on my neck....nice work guys.
This song just gets better and better the more I listen to it. Thank you for creating beautiful music.
So good. The recording and mix on this song are incredible. Listen with headphones to really appreciate the work that went into recording and mixing this. Been a fan of MO, but love this new track and look forward to hearing more from Watchhouse.
Amazing, but then I wouldn’t have expected anything less from these musicians ✌️❤️🙏🎶
The visuals in this video have a 70s vibe to them. I like it!
Not going lie. We are excited and scared for what this change will bring. Looking forward to the new album release and seeing you live this summer. Keep being great!
I have been listening to you guys for years. I even drove to Islamorada blue grass fest just to see you guys specifically. This name change was a bit shocking to me. But I just want you guys to know this song is awesome!! Excellent work guys!!
Far Out! We all progress as time moves on and so do you, you wonderful beings. Congrats on the changes and your fans will continue to appreciate! With Respect and Love.
This is really growing on me.
What a great way to introduce your new name. The song and video are captivating, I look forward to whatever comes next.
Artists are born to Create, not stagnate! Beautiful!
Can't wait to see y'all at Wolf Trap 🐺🔒
Acid trip, but has a positive message.
thanks for being one of my main sources of inspiration the past years. the journey is amazing. see yall down the music journey.
Beautiful! While I shall always love Mandolin Orange, I already love Watchhouse! My new favorite group!
Amazing tune, Gotta share this with the family!
Love the song; love the name. The song reminds me of Andrew Bird's music.
Good to see you guys. This week I found myself watching, a couple of times, that live show at the Berkeley Cafe some ten years ago .... Good to see you. beautiful new song.
Excited to see y’all at Red Rocks no matter what your name is!
First of all I have been a fan of MO for years . My opinion here...the extended covid lock down has had a profound effect on so many people and it’s obvious it has changed this group !
The gendra has evolved . More spacey and self reflective. While the new music is a snap shot of where they are time will tell how this translates to the old fans and I am sure they will get new fans that never related to folksy Americana I personally love ! I wish them well on the new journey !
Just discovered you guys this year and instantly fell in love with your music... looking forward to this new chapter!
This is perfect
Can't wait to hear the rest of the new stuff. Loving all of it the entire ride so far. These two have brought much beauty into my life.
Gorgeous and enlightening song. I understand the need to change. Behind you 100%!
Is it even possible that I could say-I love-love 💗 this new direction even more so!!!
I’ve just played it five times in a row and I’m not done yet!!!!!
More, more...🥰🥰
I would like to add, thank goodness for Strawberry Fields Forever!!!
Just wow. So beautiful. I can't listen to anything else for the rest of the day.
Still sounds excellent, still my favorite band. Love y’all, can’t wait to see you live again (and again. And again)
Have loved your music since I first heard it. Thanks for continuing!
Wowww! Thanks for reminding me how amazing simplicity can be. Looking forward to more music and videos
I am here for the new name, music, and video! Great song and video!
Beautiful song! That intro is haunting.
Beautifull, congrats Emily & Andrew.
Really nice new sound, opening up new possibilities. Thanks
Excited to see where this new direction takes us! And can't wait to see yall perform in person again when the world opens back up -- it's been too long.
Love the new sound! Looking forward to the new album. Keep on evolving your music as you grow as humans, I think we as fans can understand that.
68 people giving thumbs-down should consider setting some time aside today to think about the choices that they are making in life.
An who broke Emily’s heart, you can see pain in that girls eyes
Oh my. Love this band. Great tune. What a cool video!!
As a long time M.O. fan, I wish you guys only success, joy and health in this new incarnation. I'm looking forward to your music, old and new. Hope to see y'all again live soon! BTW, I hear a little R.E.M. in this (which I mean as a compliment!!)
Love everything about this.
i dig the new band name! excited for the new album
Awesome. Can’t wait to hear the new direction & new music. Hope you will still tour the NE when things get back to “normal.”
Transcending as ever!!
Sounds very good to me. You are the artists...do what you will and good luck with it.
Really cool song. Trying to figure out if I'm in a hypnotic trance after watching the video. LOL! Don't fully understand the name change, but my understanding is irrelevant. Your band, you get to name it. Will be listening regardless. Thanks!
Can't wait to see you guys at ROMP!!!!!!
Red Ants Pants is lucky to have you appearing soon . Loved the message and video was great 😊
Love the new song ! I see now why you were so happy to get it released.
Amazing!👏 That felt like such a journey
Wow, this is beautiful. I'm on strong meds for a rotator cuff tear and this music is making me tingle!
Congratulations on your latest creation! We all grow....change. Our heart stays as it is but needs a new outfit per se', to release new perspectives, new innovations in expressing ourselves. The name is great because it means something to you as artists or inspires new directions or risks. Congrats on the bravery.
I and LOVE and YOU.....
Both, and all of you
In the Watchhouse
Damn such beautiful harmony and thie visual effects for this video is great. Good job you two
