How to Determine Neck Angle on a Guitar - Don't Mangle your Angle!

  • This is one of the most common questions I get. How do you determine neck angle?
    1-2% for a flat top, 3-4% for a carve top. you need to play a little back and forth when you are setting this for your guitar. Tall bridges can cause a lot of headaches. make sure you do a dry run through before you do anything on your guitar

    This is great info. It'll keep me from having to shim the neck, the next time I make a guitar with a Bigsby!👍😎🎸🎶

    Just what I was looking for. Are these just like a door shim, or do you make them each time? And does the pocket template pivot from the side towards the nut, (place it in position, and just lift the back to get shims in?) or do you maintain alignment with the heel side when clamping down? I know it is very minor, but just want to make sure I have it right. I am using a closed pocket template, so I don't want to end up with a little unrouted spike on the front edge of the pocket or something. Hope my question makes sense.

    The angle of the dangle,is equal to the heat of the meat.Or don't gooch the pooch.Great info BigD, I'm surprised that most solid bodies don't do this.Plus it will add some strength for the twelves string pull , I'm thinking thats a plus. Good stuff .🎸👍

      @@aaronblack79 it worked out well in the end, I was slightly off so I ended up shimming the neck by a very small amount, I glued a veneer to the heel and it seemed to sort my issue 😁

      @aaronblack79 4 роки тому +1

      @@DeanMakes in retrospect, you think it is better to miss 1-2 mm high and have to raise the TOM up, as opposed to ending up low and having to shim? I have ordered a neck pocket template that's only a half body length, so I hope by building long shims and using a straight edge, I should be able to verify like 19mm clearance at the bridge, rather than assuming my 1.64° calculated angle to be correct on its own. In theory, I think I can use angle plus required bridge height to double verify.

      @@aaronblack79 in my opinion I'd say yes, one mistake that I made was trusting my depth of pocket calculation, I think I over shot slightly as I didn't get close and check I just went for it which meant that I was just outside of the adjustment of my bridge.

    Hmmm. What are the issues with tall bridge? I have a jaguar with a quite tall bridge..still wondering how to define if it's too tall. I have some issues with strange noise going from the thimbles so wondering if this is not caused by that/too much pressure?? What height is"too tall". I would be thankful for any insight, ideas or tips how to determine what to aim for with a shim

    What is brand on your angle finder? All I see is very short ones. Not sure if they can do the same job. I need to find out the angle of my set necks on an SG & Firebird to see if they are good candidates for a Maestro Vibrola. Would it work to zero the finder tool laying flat on the body.. and then placing it on the neck? Will that show the degree it's set to? I've heard 3 1/2 degrees will give enough downward tension on the Maestro behind the bridge to work well. Not all SGs and FBs are set that way.Thanks!

    Love your vids! keep 'em coming.. but I was praying that your rout was true as your template was still bouncing even after shimming.. would not want to ruin that beautiful quilt top.. love to see this one stained and finished.. also, when you placed the bridge to test height.. are you including the potential extra space that a bushing collar may add? looks like you just placed it on the top of the body.. but sometimes the bushing collars add more height.. this is how I mess things up.. my dry runs get damp sometimes from the unexpected.. great work !!

      Try switching from a 12 string to a 6 string for a solo in the middle of a song during a live gig (You know, like Jimmy Page doing Stairway or Glen Frey on Hotel California, just to name a couple). It's a lot easier to go from one neck to the other on the fly than having two guitars on stage. Hell, Steve Vai has some with 3 necks, 12 string, 6 string and fretless necks all on one guitar.

    • @chrischoir3594
      @chrischoir3594 2 роки тому

      @@pyrimid I have 25 guitars and no Fenders and No boltons. Fender are all garbage. So not everyone "has atleast one fender" But you can explain it in the the same way you explain why Toyota Corolla is the most popular car. It is cheap and accessible and if it breaks or gets stolen you don't care. Also Boltons are more popular because not everyone can afford a real well built guitar like a Gibson or PRS. Lastly in the 50s and 60s when rock/pop music started some people used Fenders because back then there was were only 3 guitar companies. Most people could not afford high end guitars like Gibson and Ric so they settled with a cheap bolton Fender. Some of these people made it big and some people today are sheep and followers so they too use Fenders since their misguided idols did. I hope this answers your question. Any more question just feel free to ask.

      @@chrischoir3594 That's an awful explanation. lol I think Fender Guitars are over rated as well but to say some people are sheep and followers is kind of like saying you're a good guy while being a dick.....If you're a good guitar player you can make any guitar sound good. It's the player not the hardware are you nuts? Are you just some kind of condescending rich prick who can't play for shit? A real player can make a pos sound good...... Also he said "PLAYS" not "HAS".
