  • A drive is being launched to try to cut down on the number of children who are regularly missing school.
There will be 18 new attendance hubs across six regions, bringing the total to 32, in an effort to help nearly 2,000 schools tackle persistent absence, the Education Department said.
The hubs are run by schools with excellent attendance that share practical ideas with other primary, secondary, alternative provision and special schools in England who need help to boost their attendance.
These sites can include a range of schemes to back schools, pupils and their families such as breakfast clubs, extracurricular activities, projects aimed at improving their processes and analysis of attendance data.
Tackling persistent absence and getting pupils to return to school has been named as a “top” priority by Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel De Souza, who say school is key to a youngster’s start in life.
TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer discusses the story with Campaign for Real Education’s Chris McGovern.

Exactly. Talk TV are propagandists and Do you know why they do this it's because just in case the children always have to wear facemasks again which they will not all thanks to Lockdown Sceptics.

Why is nobody addressing this fact. The quality of education children are getting at primary school is abysmal. Classrooms are chaotic, educational material is of very low quality. My daughter has home schooled her daughters through primary school because it was that bad at the primary schools they attended. The older girls are now doing very well at secondary school and she was complemented on how advanced her girls education was when they started at the school. A problem they both have is the disruption to lessons other children cause which makes lessons very frustrating for them. As it makes it very difficult to work properly at their schoolwork with the constant rowdy behaviour around them. They want to do well and get good exam results but the poor discipline at the school isn't helping.

If we lived in a society where this government spent less on foreign aid and more on education welfare and Law and order we would not be in this situation

Sorry not all Brits do not take education seriously, it is case by case. Please do not bad mouth all Brits. Remember here in Britain we have the whole range of British students, with immigrant communities we have mostly ambitious people. Also, the English students have to cope with anti white sentiments and people from so many diverse language groups.

Literacy is super high. Compared to say, 1930 most British people have always been uneducated and ignorant.

Not everyone my daughter was a very slow eater in the mornings it took her 45 minutes to a hour eating , an then we got up an hour earlier because of this an used play with cereals rather eat it , so in the end I used to give her a banana or apple to eat on way to school but she used to throw it in bin , so maybe there’s some children out there that just don’t want to eat in mornings , same with adults every child is different .

I am all for kids being in school come rain or snow, I never had a snow day like they do now, I just think it gets silly when they open the school for 1/2 day and require the parents to get the time off work to come and collect them and the children are just playing board games or watching movies

We have an enormous problem is this country with parents not being parents but their children’s friends. They allow the children to make decisions that should belong to parents, even day to day ones such as what we are having for tea (is this problem contributing to obesity?!). They are not bringing children up to know their (lower) place in society. Young people have little sense of thinking of others: their loud, foul mouthed, music blaring out on public transport is common and the public is scared to say anything. I have come to the conclusion I must be the only one finding this behaviour offensive. No one backs me up when I politely request they modify their behaviour. My friends tell me I am foolhardy even interacting with them at all. How has it come to this?!

Half myth half truth that foreign immigrant families value eduvcation; go to a lot of Secondary comps and see how amazing they are now with 123 different languages spoken.

Generally, the East Asians are at the top of the list for valuing education, non-Muslim Indians are second, all others are third and many of them don't value education at all, the children are born here of immigrant parents, they are born here, and they can barely speak English, their parents don't see it as a priority that they speak English in England, the country they were born in. Idk why people are so afraid to be specific and name which immigrants they are talking about. Those in the Muslim communities are problematic on many levels.

Will add Julia that many parents use food banks and struggle to feed kids which is why the schools do
When a parent has to choice between gas electric and food that’s the position they are in

There was also discipline in schools. As a retired teacheer , since 2001, teachers had authority, and mostly, parents backed schools. And, please, it is,"children" not kids.

When i was a kid i hated school so much i skived off all the time. As an adult with hindsight it really wasn't so bad, i have a lot of good memories of being at school, it was a beautiful campus, there were some lovely teachers, also some truly awful teachers, and i also have a load of bad memories too, from the teachers. If school teachers were replaced by computers and robots, schools would be a lot better, and i bet way more kids would be happy to be there. My daughter is severely autistic and i home educate her, she needs a stable 24/7 1:1 carer/teacher, etc, yet the council still tried to strong-arm me into putting her into school(she is non-verbal, ADHD, very loud, very disruptive, sleep issues, stims a lot, incontinent, food sensory issues so doesn't chew solid food(has to be spoon-fed smooth foods), regresses a lot(so when you think you've effectively taught her something, a tiny minor change causes her to forget what she learned, if she were in school that would happen a lot more often with teachers and carers there needing time off or changing jobs)), probably so they could snatch that extra funding allocated for my daughter, and not even use it for my daughter, whilst she disrupts every single poor quiet child in any class, lol. It's a no, on so many levels. If she could be quiet and not so disruptive, i would consider it, but she's a lot of work, i'm here, willing and able to do that work, but these schools and councils want that extra funding for a disabled child, which is around £30,000 per year i think, might be per term, and it's very rare that they actually use that funding for the child it is for, they add it into the pot and focus on the younger, less disabled kids that they feel have a chance in life to be independent, so kids like mine are not only left behind, not only not given any kind of suitable education, but they are also not watched, and many of these kids 'elope' they run off, they can't help it they are neurodevelopmentally disabled.

This is annoying me! We decided to homeschool our children because the school system is broken! The argument that insists children must be in school regardless is so wrong! Schools must be fit for purpose, that being education (Math, English, Science, etc.), not state/liberal indoctrination. They should also be places where children and staff should feel safe, where discipline is aqeduetly enforced, and not over something ridiculous like a child wearing a slightly off shaded colour type of shoe! A system in which children can go to school knowing that if bullying occurs, it will be adequately dealt with. We often hear about the fear and sense of injustice many experience in terms of having to see the person who has perpetrated a crime against them, but many children are often forced to be in the presence of kids who barely face any punishment for the horrible deeds they carry out towards them. I'd like you to please get to grips more with modern-day school situations throughout the country before insisting that school is always the best place for children.

School sucks. Sit cross legged all day to prepare for the non existent jobs of yesterday. Most successful peoples don't try to fit neatly into being a flexible worker bee. They redifine and reinvent.

    • @RoxanneLavender

Absolutely. Not like they're teaching robotics and advanced mechanics in school, yet these kids if they didn't have that creativity bashed out of them at school, would be learning these advanced subjects at home, using the internet, and through clubs and the like. School is supposed to teach the basics, and it fails on that obviously if the teachers can't even teach the kids how to read and write.

Very well said Sam Armstrong . So much entitlement these days without giving anything back or earning the rights that some folks believe they deserve. These people just need a nanny on a permanent basis, yet they preach to the masses their woke ideologies as the desired wisdom. If they are so wise why the nannies ? The whingeing and the offence taken on behalf of others ? Chris McGovern, I applaud your work and dedication whilst trudging against 90 mile per hour headwinds.
