      One thing I like about the film and t.v. industry is that BW really stand together and help each other out. More and more of them have their own production companies and are getting production deals. These days, it seems like all the major networks have their version of a Shonda Rhimes. They bring in black writers and everything.

      white people support their own so the money and demand is there for their actors to make more. we as black people don't show up to the the box office, so the money isn't there. if white movies make $250 million at the box office, then the main actor can get paid $20 million, but if the black movie only make $30 million, then the main actor can only make $3 million. same with Monique. black people wasn't going to show up to see Monique on Netflix, therefore, they weren't going to make a return on investment had they paid her the same as Amy Schumer

    A key difference between black Hollywood and white Hollywood is wealth. Something they rarely speak about is that some of the white entertainers had family money to give them a financial cushion while they pursue their ambitions. This allows them to say no to low wages.
    But as a majority of black people who want to enter the industry they have to barely survive. The higher ups know this and can systematically low ball black entertainers.
    It will take SYSTEMATIC CHANGE and *reparations* for fair equitable pay. Especially to black women who get paid the least.

    • @ednajay5724

      Yessss! The salary you start with forms the base for your next project. If you start on a very low rate, your next gig, even if it's higher will still be low relative to the person who started on a higher rate and is just as talented and has similar audience pull

    • @ednajay5724
      @ednajay5724 3 роки тому +45

      @The Hip hop Guitarist Assuming you watched the video and followed the math she explained, 150k gross earning comes down to 30k take home. 30k take home for 5 months work is 6k per month. Which would be decent (6*12 is 72k, not up to the 75k mark of what’s considered to be the level where additional increases in wealth don’t matter as much) for a 9-5 worker in most fields but she’s an actress in Hollywood. Who has to support her son (who she explains in the video, his tuition costs exactly that 30k) but assuming he goes to a cheaper school, she’d still have to spend on a house in a good neighborhood, she’s famous and that can put her security at risk. Other bills, supporting extended family who feel like she’s doing great etc. it’s not a lot of money to spend tbh

    • @chocolateangel8743
      @chocolateangel8743 3 роки тому +43

      @The Hip hop Guitarist It's the only work she did for 5 months. If you work it out for the year, there are people that work in technology and healthcare that make that -- and more. It's not a lot of money -- especially for a hit movie (that brought in hundreds of millions of dollars) and established actor. It's nowhere near rich. You have a poor person's mentality.

    The sad thing is, this is true for multiple people not just people who are in the industry. I work in education and when you work in “private” institutions, it’s not the government who’s paying you so you can negotiate your salary and things of the sort. For maybe the first 4 years of my work life, I got paid dust. And when I realized that and started speaking up, people looked at me differently like how dare you speak up for what you truly are worth? And so I vowed myself to never get in a situation or place where my worth isn’t recognized from the get go.
    I do understand that it’s a very privileged way of thinking because I’m single and I don’t have 2 or 3 kids I have to feed and clothe. But I promise you, the minute you start believing in your own worth and let God guide you towards something new, no matter how scary that new may seem, other people will look at you and understand that if they don’t come at you straight they’re gonna lose you because you bring something nobody else does.

    She is amazing. I believe 50% from taxes is highly exaggerated but she is right on how people only see what someone receive and not consider what they really received after necessary deductions, lifestyle etc.

    11:52 is the real tea. They (producers and casting directors lacking cultural competence) think "black actress" not Taraji Henson.

    Fun fact: I went to the same high school that Jim Henson went to.
    It’s a Visual and Performing Arts magnet school.

      As being a super fan of Jim Henson , in Atlanta The center for Puppetry Arts is an amazing place to visit a lot of Jim Henson creations are housed there! Beside Sesame Street I fell in love with The Labrynth and there’s a actual display of the talking hands ! As a 35 year old woman I teared up so and explained to my you daughters what it was!
      BTW also a super fan of Taraji !!

    My girl! I love taraji p Henson. She is such a great actress and I can’t name my favorite role because there have been so many. Who can ever forget Yvette in baby boy, shut in hustle n flow,Mary in proud Mary and cookie from empire? I’m so happy for her success. She seems like such a grounded, real and down to earth person. Would love to meet her one day.

      YESSSSSSS. Plus, Deuteronomy 8:18, Proverbs 10:22, and Psalms 112:3. GOD is not against wealth, just greed. And King Solomon was a trillionaire by today's standards and GOD is not a respecter of persons.
