I remember that day as a freshman student standing on the steps leading into the Shrine. We had completed our all-night vigil the night before, I played the marimba along with other musicians as a host of students sang and prayed. Later that morning just prior to the Pope’s arrival as the nuns were walking up the stairs, I decided to be bold and began handing flowers to some of the nuns from a decorated 50-gal barrel next to the entrance. I jumped on top of the drum with a handful of flowers and joined in the excitement as Pope John Paul 2 was climbing the stairs going back and forth shaking hands. The secret service had me eventually step down, but I remember his face full of love as our eyes met and our hands clasped. My uncle remembers seeing me on TV that morning with my blue ski cap. He is our family saint, our oldest son Jon Paulo is named after him, and we are so thankful for the blessings we have received from his intercession.
It sounds like it was a great experience wich to this day you hold in your heart and it impacts you life - just as Saint John Paul II would want to happen. He touched the heart of all he encountered and is is great to hear such impact stories as yours. God Bless!

Growing up in a Fundamentalist Baptist family, my parents and grandparents always spoke ill of the Catholic Church and the Pope. At 42, and after being Catholic for one year this week, I truly do not understand their hatred. This man was a giant in the eyes of many, including non-Catholics. He truly was a gift from God to us all.
Congratulations, dear one year a Catholic! What a blessing to answer the call to be Catholic. I believe God calls all into his one holy catholic apostolic Church. I have heard over and over that in heaven all are Catholic. Makes sense to me. You too! ❤️
