The black backgrounds are a reference to a popular illustration style of the 1920s and 30s, popularly known as the "Fade-Away girl". Illustrator Coles Philips is probably the best known for it.
@@woodencoyote4372 Thanks for the info. Uncultured bores that we are, I just thought they were half done (or joking aside, it was more that they'd decided to do that to pull focus to the directly relevant parts of the scene). Cool to learn it was trying to evoke a style.
It's a desk blotter and your desk is missing it's key, this is as obvious as a key under the doormat. Games of this era expected the player to have at least looked at the manual, this one would have covered how the ask about interface worked. Sierra games also tended to have a bit of a guide to get you through the very basics at the start so typically players wouldn't be stuck at first room.
