This is the first boss in the game. Was in the Trials before, and is the same. Hits like a truck. So make sure to use the Soul block ability and attack back after the blocks and parries. Dodging also helps! Enjoy!

People keep calling this a prequel, but in FFI you do fight and kill Garland towards the beginning, and that's what kickstarts the search for the Four Fiends that guard the crystals.
Spoiler alert: the world of FF1 is essential in an infinite time loop because when garland died, he travels to the past and becomes chaos. This game is essentially a re-imagining of how garland became evil.

@@shadowdouglas450 So is the Knight you just fought. Princess Sarah even asked Jack to find Garland who went missing on a mission to the Chaos Shrine. Side note, look at the dude's armor and listen to his voice. If he wears that helmet and talks like Vegeta from Dragonball Z, it's Garland.
It is a prequel. But the chaos advent isn't garland.

it's crazy how much foreshadowing there is in this game... this boss keeps telling them he's Jack Garland in the future "know what your fate is!"
Neon straight up says Jack's plan, she did the same thing he does at the end* before saying "Bullshit" he says he can "feel him" but he's just feeling himself... art is crazy

@@Rubhen925 Me and a friend repeated the mission on Hard (also Adamantite in multiplayer settings) after initially doing on Action and found this basically impossible lol. Hoping soul shield might help if timed like perfectly. For a first boss it’s amazingly difficult.

It's actually a pretty great showcase on some major flaws the gameplay has.
The boss VERY rarely staggers, so there's hardly ever a chance to really commit with combo abilities or the like. A good amount of time is spent just poking back with 1-2 normal hits, and then backing off to either guard or dodge what comes next. Soul Guard its break gauge like a mofo, so unless you have the fight down to a science, it's tricky to rely on that much, unless you just spam Lightbringer every chance you get.
It's... Unfortuante in the long run, because it completely makes certain weapons / jobs just.. Not very good in comparison to others.
Stuff like that is what I hope to see balanced out when Trials of Bahamut, and future DLC's hit.

This has seriously got to be the hardest 1st boss I've ever faced. I'm usually decent at games like this, but fuck this game. Wasn't feeling the cheesy dialog anyway.

I'm pretty sure this is designed to be impossible on Hard difficulty for first playthrough.
No it can be done. I'd you time the soul shields you can parry all his attacks except the grab. Worst case use Lance throws to weaken him down

@@BabyYodieright? It’s obviously gonna take a few times but like dark souls you’ll get the rhythm of the fight eventually. Then it gets easy even on hard
First boss and a very hard one, already showing the game's flaws - very bad attack telegaphing and his Flame Blade ability is making the unblockable attacks undetectable (they are supposed to have a red effect, same red as his flame). Lack of dodge cancel along with how much time it takes to use combos, even as high-speed classes makes it very risky to commit to any kind of strategy.
The only thing you can do with bosses like this, is 1-2 attacks - parry/dodge - 1/2 attacks - parry/dodge and repeat that until the end. And still it is going to be very hard with how you cannot tell which attacks to dodge and which attacks to parry. You have a % chance of succeeding but not because of skill but because of how this game works. A very bad flaws showcase.
