I was about 13 when this came out and at the time I liked it. Although image art is much more dynamic, I always loved the soft coloring and "vintage comics" looking art Valiant had. It looked like no other comics out there at the time.

I loved the beginning of this book. The idea that he would take the part of him that has the traumatic memories and split it off from himself and send it somewhere else was so cool to me. Valiant got a lot of criticism early on for having a 'house' art style and it was cool to see how Image artists drew their characters.

As a standalone, I thought Black was really good when I was a kid. Probably didn't hurt that CyberForce and WildC.A.T.s were my favorite Image comics. I found the issue late in '94 and had already read the Killer Instinct arc, so seeing Ripclaw and Warblade together again in an alternate timeline was awesome.

i was on that Image comics hype train when i was collecting in the 90s. i also bought into the Deathmate hype. I never bought all if them because like you said, the Valiant comics just did not have the same draw or appeal that the Image books and character did with the exception of X-O manowar (one of my favs). Thank you for sharing the Deathmate story as i finally got a good overview of it. I may have get the rest of them just to have the “set” since i can get them foe way less than they were going for back when they came out. i dont think this was a bad video either. you did manage to power through it despite being disappointed in the series. 🤘🏽

They seemed absolutely ludicrous. And I slashed them to the bone. I was like: Spawn’s your highest selling image book at 200 copies, he’s not in it and you’re ordering 500 copies of this thing?!

I remember this. I was a fan of Valiant but I bought Youngblood Strikefile#1 ,Wildstar#1 and Union #1 after reading the Deathmate Prologue back in the day. The very early Valiant comics were pretty good and had a very science fiction feel to them. Characters aged in real time and Jim Shooter obviously did his research in physics when writing Solar Man Of The Atom. Good review. I own more Image Comics than Valiant though. lol.

The reason why it looks very bland and very orderly is because basically because Jim Shooter hates art that isn't very orderly. He liked it when art followed smoothly from panel to panel and wanted to make sure when you read a comic you knew what was going on. He also stressed realism in the look of things as if this how superheroes in the real world would of look at the time. Valiant's motto was more focus on plot, writing, and continuity rather than art and color. Best way to describe it is Image Comic books leans more towards "comic book" while Valiant led more towards "graphic novel" so best way to describe Valiant comics are they are basically novels with panels and pictures. You read it for the plot and story over the art.

  • @DemoSonicScreamer1
    @DemoSonicScreamer1 Рік тому

Theoretically, the idea behind Deathmate had a chance. If it had been Valiant's superior writing staff with Image's top artists, it could have produced results. Black was somewhat late, but it was more like November 1993 kind of late. I never actually got the Epilogue or Red at the time, since I literally stopped collecting comics before they came out, only reading them 15 years later.
I do wonder why Valiant entrusted such a critical crossover series to such unknown artists though. Quesada did some of this series, but did Bart Sears do anything here? If you want to check out Valiant I would suggest pretty much anything pre Unity (Magnus, Solar, etc.). Rai was solid when it was the first guy, but the 2nd Rai in Rai and the Future Force was a douche. X-O Manowar was pretty solid throughout its run. Harbinger is solid until that 25th issue (which you note in the review), then after that it sucked. Eternal Warrior was always good until the end. Archer and Armstrong (who is Gilad's brother) was good when Barry Windsor-Smith was doing it, but after he left it tanked. I liked Turok and Bloodshot early on. Stuff like Hard Corps was just meh. Ninjak was a cool James Bond ninja type dude, but his own book didn't last (and the Black Water deal was just a 2 part storyline that began his title, not a crossover).
What I never understood about the Bloodshot movie is that they adapted the terrible 2012 reboot version that no one bought instead of doing an actual faithful adaptation of the original comic that solid 300,000 copies a month at one point.

This was an all around lame series. A bad choice by two companies that couldn't have been on more opposite ends of the spectrum.
I wish you'd given a little more respect to the Valiant characters and the creators that worked on them.
Valiant actually had good titles before the speculation market kicked in, their upper management pushed Jim Shooter out and reduced Bob Layton to a "figurehead" E.I.C., and tried to cash in by merchandising their products...

Which were the good Valiant titles? Bloodshot looked cool, and I've enjoyed the few issues of X-O I've picked up in passing. Curious about Rai, but that's about it for me. I think it was their choice of watercolors over digital coloring that sealed their fate with me.

      @@CryptoComics ~
      Thanks for the reply!
I'll give my overview and opinions:
      1. If you were stoked on Bloodshot, you'd probably like Rai as Rai was a 40th Century descendant of the program that created Bloodshot. Obviously more advanced than Bloodshot, Rai was the sole defender of Japan in the 40th Century. Japan, in the Rai comics, was no longer a country - it was a 2nd moon...
      2. I'd also think you'd like Eternal Warrior (Gilad). He tied in heavily with Armstrong & Archer - Armstrong was his brother - and the Eternal Warrior in the Valiant Universe was solely responsible for the myth/legends of David & Goliath, the epic of Gilgamesh, and the 3 Musketeers. He also had encounters with X-O during the time of the Roman conquest of Gaul, prior to X-O getting the armor and ending up in the 20th Century. Those past encounters were "contemptuous" and Gilad always referred to present-day meetings with X-O as dealing with a "thick neck Aryan in an advanced battle armor".
      3. Harbinger was a good title. It was "The Boys" twenty five years before the series. Toyo Harada, the main antagonist, was a cross between Ra's al Ghul and Sebastian Shaw of the Hellfire Club, with a little classic Magneto thrown into the mix...
I understand your point about the water colors. It is too pastel for my liking as well.
But they had some damn good artists working for them: Barry Windsor-Smith, Joe Quesada, Don Perlin, and David Lapham to name a few.

It was the worst. What's awesome are those covers by Liefeld and Silvestri featuring Bloodshot with Youngblood's Shaft and X-O Manowar with Ripclaw. It tricks a young man's brain into think awesomeness is inside, but it was a dirty trick. Rob's segment was definitely the best of all of it, but that's just not enough after the year long wait.
