  • The Wendigo is a mythical creature originating from Algonquian folklore, primarily in the northern forests of North America. It is depicted as a malevolent spirit or a monstrous creature with a skeletal frame and long, antler-like horns. The Wendigo is associated with insatiable hunger and cannibalistic tendencies, driven to feed on human flesh. It is often depicted as a gaunt figure with exaggerated limbs, possessed by an unending appetite that can never be satisfied.
This episode of Rest for the Wicked features dark ambient music and winter forest sounds.

I live in the middle of what was Algonquian lands (Michigan) and grew up with these myths and stories because the Native People are still here and they're memories and history deeply honored. Sure the dark and shadows can hide dangers but when it snows and the night is bright and the moon black, its so much more terrifying to hear the crunch of snow from a footstep not your own or a distorted howl in the distance. They come with snow and bitter cold that changed them, flitting across the land like wraiths ever-hungry. No defense other than to never go out at night and keep the fire warm and large. Its honestly why im happy its usually deer running across a field towards the road when driving at night in winter but i never look to hard unless its not. Never know whats just behind those trees or peaking behind a barn or trench along a long empty country road.

Until Dawn is garbage. Those aren't Wendigos, those are Gollum's cousins. It was better when it was purely the real but maybe fake but also real psychotic killer angle.
Wendigos are spirits that possesses people who perform cannibalism or are too greedy. They're a personification of starvation and the coldness in human hearts.
Wendigo psychosis is/was a real medical diagnosis for Native Americans, however.

Ello! ^^ im a Algonquian Native(Plains Cree) and im glad that our myths/legends are getting more attraction from a outside point of view, but People also have to remember that Wendigos are NOT something to mess with, No matter what non-believers/haters say... WE have these myths/legends for a reason and it would be nice that (sry about me saying this, as i know some do respect the spirit, this is for those who DONT) SOME people stop saying "theyer not real/its just made up" type of comments.. because Wendigos are VERY REAL and should be respected :/
(in our culture and im sure other Native Cultures will agree with me on this... But we are as Natives know that everything either it be a spirit/evil/good and nature itself MUST be RESPECTED.. otherwise bad things happen and we always end up on the blaming end .. Please people, respect Native cultures when we talk on stuff, because most if not all the time, its coming from a reliable source and the stories of myths/legends are more warnings to future generations... thats all i have to say and im sry about this being long, but it just peevs me sometimes that people dont listen to us when we try to only help. ^^' )

    Heres is a story
One night, a family went out in the forest to go camping when they realized they didnt have any firewood. The parents sent their son to look for some wood deep in the forest. After some time, the parent were getting very worried. They go to look for their son, but see no trace of him. They keep looking and looking, but still no sign of him anywhere. They thought about giving up because it was no use wasting their time looking for their son, but thats when they heard a long, deep, and menacing growl. They get frightend and fun off back to the site, but realize they have gone too far and were lost. They tried to call for help but there was to ranger tower near by, or anyone for that matter. There was no signal in the forest. Then, they heard a terrifying screech coming from the woods. Thats when they realize.. that there was no escape from what people call.......
    The windigo
They ended up seeing it and when they did, they stopped in their tracks, frightened. They couldnt move, and with the blink of an eye, they went missing.
    Never to be seen again..
    The end

One of the weirdest things to me is how everyone added deer horns to the Wendigo mythology. Suddenly, all the imagery and descriptions had horns, deer skulls, all that jazz. Almost universally. (I blame deer with CWD.) But in the folklore, it was more like the critters in Until Dawn. Like a bigger meaner Smeagol. Or that's how they were always described in the tribe. Though... Not really the kinda thing you just go and ask an elder about. With what I've heard and see, I'd almost be afraid of the answers.

So I live right next to a forest that I often go on hikes through during the day time and it is idyllic and inviting during the sunshine hours, filled with bird-song and the sounds of rustling undergrowth caused by wind or small critters but can be incredibly unnerving at night (obviously). Currently it is 1:30 in the morn and I had my headphones on and decided I wanted a cigarette so made my way outside. I made my way out into the middle of my yard away from the comfort of my living room lights and was just gazing into the tree line, imagining something unseen looking back and immersing myself in the atmosphere. I turned around briefly in the direction of my house then heard the sound of footsteps and an intensely low, menacing growl. I turned around suddenly half-expecting to see some deformed creature reaching out to steal me into the darkness, my heart almost literally in my throat. I felt very stupid as I was aware I had headphones on the entire time and knew it was coming, didn't help one damn bit! Suffice to say I finished the cigarette early, shuddered in existential dread then very quickly made my way inside and turned on every light...perfect soundtrack if it can elicit the feeling of dread. 10/10 but not doing that again!

These kind of mythological creatures are still very prominent in todays stories and lullabies here in Serbia. Since the old history, the religion and beliefs in Jugoslavia have usually taken inspiration from old fairy tales and took more of a pagan-approach. Tho it has been orthodox for some centuries, many Serbians, especially the older generation, remember all the stories and songs about forest witches, creatures at night and many more.

We took a misshapen skull and antlers from the riverbank, found at the end of a hard journey through a cold Summer in the wild North. Something had chewed through the back of the cranium, in or out was hard to tell, the stains from the mud suggested most beasts had let it be for some time. Later, far to the South, we cut off his antlers, and I kept what was left of his head until I was West of the mountains, where I sunk the remains in a burnt lake; they drew blood before departing: even without a jaw, the teeth were sharp enough to bite flesh. So I let a few more drops of red to the Fall river, like so many before in the Canadian Shield, red like the ancient figures painted on the stone cliffs my blood had burned before. Now I do not wonder: what is a wasicun when the fat is all gone? Lean, cold, and so very, very hungry.

I live in Scotland and a few years ago me and some friends decided to go to a mountain bothy (hillwalking shelter, basically an old crofters cottage) for one of the guys birthday weekend. The bothy is located on the shore of a sea loch (Loch Long) and we did a spot of fishing and just chilling out, i don't drink or smoke but the rest of the lad's enjoyed that sort of thing but i wanted to be alert incase something happened to one of us. Loch Long is located in Argyll and Bute which is a massive county that boasts beautiful scenery and has stunning mountains and it's also part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park, it's truly stunning. The first night went great, no issues and none of the other lad's fell into the Loch or went missing i stayed awake and made sure that everyone was safely inside the bothy and i was sitting outside by the fire talking to a few hillwalkers who were also staying in the bothy. The next day we all got ourselves together for another day before going home the following day, across the Loch is a oil offloading facility and oil tankers come in, off load their cargo and it's then pumped over to the refinery in the east coast of Scotland so there's a constant humming noise of pumps running and probably electrical equipment running at high voltage. In the afternoon me and one of the hungover guys decided to walk up the side of the mountain back to the car which was a good 4 or 5 miles away parked up, there's a gravel road to the bothy but only the park rangers and emergency service vehicles are permitted to use it but at least there's a decent footing to the car. The other guy said "why don't we take a shortcut through the woods and hopefully get to the car quicker?" I was very hesitant about the idea but eventually decided to go for it but a good 30 minutes into this ridiculous idea and after walking through marsh and deer dung plus the bloody midges bitting my body I'd had enough and told the other guy that I'm heading back to the bothy, so he angrily marched away trying to keep going. I was soon lost in the very dense forest and thought if i make my way back down to the shore and follow the shoreline in the opposite direction I'd get to the bothy easily. So now I'm on my own trying to get back through all of the horrible stuff I'd went through but i was getting disoriented and thought well i can hear the people out on their boats with their engines running, i can hear the oil depo, the birds the water hitting the rocks, the problem was i knew i was going downwards and everything i could hear was disappearing like i was heading further away and at the same time i felt a very strange presence which very quickly turned to absolute fear, i very quickly became petrified my heart was pounding and i was breathing quickly but i kept walking down and the sound of my feet crunching the dead sticks disappeared, I truly felt like i was in the presence of a witch or something similar it's the most profound thing ever to have experienced, i swear it felt like something pure dark was watching me from behind one of the trees and i knew it was following me down to the water, as soon as i could see the shore by god i ran like the devil himself was chasing me, about 20ft from the rocks all the sounds came back, I jumped onto the rocks, slipped and banged my arse and back but when i turned around to look back at the forest i could hear the sound of the small twigs and sticks snapping as if something was running back up the forest away from me. It's an experience I'll never forget and hopefully doesn't happen again 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I may not know the stories about Wendigos, but there are many other creatures in our country. A horse in a coat, a black Volga (and with it a black garage), the Owner of the forest (It is best to read about him in the visual novel "Tiny Bunny"), Viy, Chyort, Kitezh-grad, Hair Stealer, Black demob and many others. Although more often they are not so scary characters. Drunken grandfather, maniacs, thieves, buffoons, the seller of all kinds of shit, tavern workers and other such ordinary, but terrible creatures under certain circumstances)

my author's hindbrain took over. im not mad tho, this is cool as fuck.
it's dark, cold, gloomy and unnecessarily creepy in the woods you had so idiotically decided to venture into on a cold winter night. suddenly, you see a small flicker of unnatural darkness in your periphery, and your eyes dart to it rapidly. only for there to be nothing there. you continue on, your breath stuttering in the face of the neverending frigid breeze. again, another flash of darkness. you turn completely and see a slight bit of white sticking out from behind a tree. an... antler? whatever. probably just a deer. you continue on, the warm but dim yellow beam of your flashlight illuminating the trees, leaving eerie shadows tucked around the trees. they seem to be watching you. The trees creak and groan in the wind as they shift. you move on, hearing the slightly comforting sound of your footsteps breaking the crust of the snow. it's a comforting and grounding rhythm, until you hear another crunch, behind you and to your right. you whip around, and there's nothing there. nothing but a dent in the snow, about the size of your own foot. Your eyes catch on the track, and you go over to inspect it. too big for a deer, wildcat of any kind, or elk. it has five toes, unlike a bear or a wolf, so it can't be those. you consider yourself pretty well-versed in terms of tracks and tracking things. you grew up in Michigan, after all. you stare at the print for a moment longer, racking your brain for a similar track, before finally giving up and moving on. trekking through the cold forest, you keep hearing crunches and seeing flickers of ivory and ebony out of the corners of your eyes. you reach a clearing and pause for a moment to marvel at the beauty of the silvery moonlight filtering through the pine needles and branches. it's a picturesque scene, and you wish you had a camera on you. As you stop to admire it, you hear a low rattle behind and to your left, seeming to resemble a growl. you slowly turn away from the scene, to see... *it*. it stands hunched over, arms leaning against the ground for support. you can see every single one of its ribs, and count them, even from this far away. Its face turns to look at you, and seems to be some sort of deer skull, with the antlers still attached. it has a long mane of greasy and matted hair, framing its skull definitively. you make eye contact with the beast, and you shiver violently as it tilts its head sickeningly. Its breathing increases, as you stand, stuck in its gaze like a fly in a spider's web. it growls once more, breathing rattled, as your adrenaline begins kicking in. Your breaths become faster and more ragged. you feel hunted. you feel small, chased, stuck, cornered, like prey. is this how rabbits feel when a fox goes after them? it's terrifying. you shiver once more, not a byproduct of the cold. distantly, you hear a wolf howl, long and husky. you wish to turn your gaze to the sound, yet you cannot move. you are stuck. it tilts its head and makes a curious chittering noise as it moves forward. even the way it moves is creepy; it walks sideways, swinging the back legs forward perpendicularly, before following soon after with the front legs. it gets closer, closer, and closer still to your face. it finally stops when the sharp nose bit of the skull is mere inches away from your own nose. Its hot breathing is crawling down your face and neck, leaving a trail of heat that soon melts into cold. you struggle to swallow as it leans down closer, unhinging its jaw.
distantly, several miles away, a woman in her cabin hears a shrill scream, and can do nothing but shake the sound off. she, at least, has the common sense to not go outside after dusk during winter in Michigan. that poor soul simply didn't understand this. they paid the highest price for their ignorance: their life.

Im doing a Warrior cats fanfic that has a mix of horror and fantasy and this music is perfect for my Warrior cat Hell known as Darkvoidclan the Cannibalistic And Vengeful.
About Darkvoidclan: Darvoidclan is the opposite of Magicclan instead of lively forests, fields, ponds, and hills instead its dark, gloomy, and lifeless everything is covered in blood and rotting flesh to survive these cats eat each other. Darvoidclan cats look like cats but they are demonic with sharp fangs and fiery eyes and bat wings. Darkviodclan and Magicclan are separated by a cave called the cave of judgment which connects to the River Of Souls which leads to the living world. Also Darkvoidclan has collars and bones from dead cats everywhere like on the ground, in rotting trees, and in bloody lakes. Also these cats can go into living cats' dreams and give them nightmares or kill them in their sleep or ask them to destroy the clans. These cats look like dragons with scales and they can breathe fire and hide in shadows and long boney tails and they use them as wips. These cats are immortal and cant die twice however instead of getting reincarnated they get re manifested and become more demonic. The longer a cat soul lives in Darkvoidclan the more demonic and scary they become. Also these cats have night vision and glowing eyes that burn like fire.
Clan founder: Voidstar: an ancient Deathclan leader after Deathstar how however she was replaced with Luciferstar who drives her out due to her breaking all of the Warrior Code before leaving she says. "I will return Luciferstar maybe not in life but in dreams so watch your back Luciferstar". Then she walks away from Deathclan Territory, her heart filled with vengeance. Many moons later she dies and is thrown into the River Of Souls then heartbeats later she wakes up in a strange place. Looking around she sees that this place is lifeless, everything is covered in blood. She looks up to see the sky is dark with no stars but only a full moon is shining Voidstar smirks her teeth shining in the eternal moonlight. "If I can't rule Deathclan then I'll make my own clan from this day forth. This land shall be called Darkvoid(clan)". Says Voidstar her heart beating with pride. For many moons she walked alone until she met another cat named Wolfskull many moons after she died. Voidstar is happy that she has company now she has a clan and a mate of her own.
Hope yall like my snyopsis ❤ also Im thinking about changeing the Darckvoidclan cats from dragon like cats to wendigo like cats or a mix of both. Let me know in the replies on what should I do to my Darkviodclan cats should I keep them as dragons where they have scales, breathe fire, have dragon like wings (ect) and also have the ability to walk through cats dreams giving them nightmares and such. Or make them be like wendigos where the cats have deer like antlers and have the ability to trick living cats to make them think that their a Magicclan cat when in reality they are not. Another ability these new cats have is the ability to manipulate sounds, shadows, other cats either at the cat's will or by force, and silent paws where they can sneak up on their victims killing them instantly with their newly sharp claws. let me know in the replies on what I should do and I might make a video about this.
Here are some new Darkvoidclan facts I just thought of so pls enjoy. Warning these facts your about to read may be too gruesome if your young or sensitive pls read with caution. In the living world their are some loner and rouge groups that believe in Darkvoidclan and on every fullmoon each group gose to the unclaimed lands of the Cursed Forest and do horrible rituals there. Some rituals would contain sacrifices, bonfires, dancing, and dark magic. For the sacrifice rituals they put their chosen cat waether it be a willing follower or an unwilling follower onto a high rock thats below the fullmoon. The ritual is done by a high priest or priestess of that group then they use a ritual dagger or simply their claws and then they start chanting cats of Darkvoidclan give us strength and the cats of the group repeats the same thing. After this the high priest or high priestess will put the dagger in their mouth and then stabs the victim's throat or they use their claws and slash their throat. As the victim's blood bleeds out the high priest or priestess would put their paw on the dying cat letting the blood soak their fur then yowl at the moon. The reason why these cats believe in Darkvoidclan is because they want immortality and power. On rare occsains sometimes the leader of Darkviodclan Voidstar manifestes to the cats and saying that she's honored that non clan cats believed her and her clan's existance.
