On the matter of the goslings, a few years ago I was driving along a narrow country road in Burgundy and came up behind 3 ewes leading a group of a dozen or so lambs. I slowed right down, expecting to have to follow them for a few hundred yards. However, there was an open gate into a field just ahead and the ewes led the flock into the field. I drove past and looked in the mirror and, to my surprise, saw the ewes lead them out again onto the road. It's not just humans who have good road sense.

hi-vis/reflectives never increases safety, neither do DRLs. Both actually create worse scenarios as the vulnerable get coerced/forced to wear (or so) something, with DRls, it becomes a light war, and from that we have the absolute clusterfuck of overtly bright lights even in broad daylight that causes problems, never mind at dusk, night or when it rains!

And yet motorists insist on pedestrians and people on bikes wearing his vis/reflectives. But when it comes to animals, fallen trees, debris etc no mention of it.
Not only does hi-vis/reflectives not change outcomes, it pushes onus onto vulnerable persons (to not get harmed) which has never, ever improved safety outcomes in any aspect of human life, only made matters worse in fact.
So your point about persons in motors being held to a higher standard is absoutely correct, it's just that it seemingly only applies in certain scenarios and not when it comes to the more vulnerable/at risk persons in the vast majorit of cases.

There are many benefits to a staggered formation along a road. The one benefit seen in the clip here is if a vehicle decides to move over there is room.
Then you have the benefit that is someone / something comes into your path unexpectedly (pedestrian for example) you have an escape route
Then there is the benefit for two wheels who will be able to filter safer and quicker thus aiding best flow.
There appears to be a need for some drivers to get as close to vehicles in front, or alongside without fully assessing or understanding that risk increases and flow decreases

I would not be happy with this as a driver and regularly let cyclists by in streets like this in London. If I'm on a road like this ill take a centre position. For starters we're supposed to give cyclist 1.5m - that wont happen here. There would also be hazards from the parked cars or pedestrians around them. Its just an easier, safer bet to allow a cyclist through for the expense of 5 seconds

The slightly subtler point I was thinking about is this "treat them like any other car" which I don't know if I agree with. The 1.5m example you gave is a good, if again largely unobserved, rule in that vein: cyclists are given a specific rule about passing meterage because of the more "vulnerable" position we're in.
And while I appreciate this 1.5m acknowledgement, I think it should come hand-in-hand with the liberties like filtering etc. that are an active advantage especially in city traffic.
We're a different kind of road user and I think ultimately separating us as much from cars (or pedestrians for that matter) will help the cause overall.
Waffly but hope it makes sense! Not arguing, just discussing an interesting point.

Reminded me of a few years ago, sitting at the side of a road with a learner, ahead a female pheasant appeared from the long grass, and set off across the road, followed by three babies. All the way across, quite a wide road, and across the grass the other side, probably a similar distance, and into the trees. Just as she entered the trees, male pheasant appeared from the left, from where female and babies had emerged. So the male was quite a long way behind, leaving childcare entirely to the female. We watched, amused, then my female learner said, "typical male".

Being in the wrong lane at a round about is challenging for a poorly skilled motorist, but it isnt always due to poor planning; I was on holiday in North Wales last week, in an area I have never visited before, and approaching a roundabout; none of the listed destinations were what I was looking for; the satnav was telling me to take the 2nd exit (straight across), so I moved to that lane, only for the satnav display to suddenly show the 3rd exit (taking the r/h exit)
Now a poor driver might have swerved into the correct lane, possibly causing an issue for other vehicles, I took the exit I was committed to, then did a U turn when it was safe, and re-entered the roundabout.

@@davidjones332 Yeah, I see a lot of issues, especially approaching junctions on smaller A roads and many B roads; often you have to stop in the road to be able to read the signposts when you are almost past them, due to tree branches blocking them - I see it with speed changes as well, and have driven into 30/40 zones unaware until spotting a repeater, as BOTH gateway signposts were obscured.
It isnt always trees/bushes though, on the A40 between Cheltenham and Oxford, approaching a particular roundabout, IMPORTANT signs are obscured by a plethora of OTHER road signs; and I do mean plethora - I think the last time I took the road, I counted about 20 signs of various sizes, colours and shapes in the 200m approaching the roundabout.

At 1:35, the emerge from the right hand side road from "the well known German brand". Interestingly, in Canada and the USA, with that type of scenerio of having to emerge onto a high speed main road, they will typically have a merge lane in the centre for vehicles to be able to tackle by first yielding to each direction seperately and secondly, to build up speed in the centre merge lane. I've experienced such a setup over there many times and it really does make things much easier. Perhaps this is what the emerging driver was sort of trying to do here, although acknowledged that in this UK example, there is centre cross hatching.

@@kenbrown2808 Yes there are similar laws in BC to not use a central two way left turn lane as a four way left turn lane! My comment was more regarding actual center merge lanes that are purpose built for the kind of emerge that we see in this clip, albeit with left and right reversed for North America. Those merge lanes have a solid white line for some distance on their right to prevent emergrers from trying to merge too early with main road traffic coming along on their right hand side on the main roadway. Thereafter, the central merge lane has a dotted white line to it's right to denote the proper merge area and eventually tapers down as it blends into the main driving lane. Sometimes these arrangements even have a raised curb to their right to prevent any illegal attempt to merge over to the right too early. I have no doubt you've seen these arrangements and again, they are different and distinct from those two way left turn lanes.

01:30 I have to be honest when I’m at a junction waiting to pull onto a major dual carriageway into the far lane, if there’s a central turning lane and the traffic is heavy I will emerge into the centre lane if traffic is clear on my right. Often waiting for both directions to be clear is inconvenient to others behind you waiting to turn left and you can be there for a very long time. The A483 in Wales is a perfect example. You just can’t wait for both directions of traffic to be clear. I understand from an instructor standpoint that you should wait for both directions to be clear however everyday scenarios if you’re a decent driver with good observation then I don’t see a huge issue if you give way to traffic on the far lane once you’ve cleared your first

Good riding is always shown in cornering. This was very good riding skills. As a car driver I try and adopt roadcraft road positions on corners to improve my visibility and to improve visibility of other road users sooner. But in a bike it is so much more important. As a car driver I have to say that a bikes choice of position on the road is so important. A rider taking an offside position close to the centre can improve a cars view of them sooner. I always like to see good skill of riding and in driving as a RoSPA associate currently in training and close to my test and a DIAmond advanced motorist already. Poor riding is easy to spot mostly on corners, inexperienced riders with L plates I spotted the other day taking a nearside position when the corner needed an offside and I had positioned close to the nearside as per roadcraft so a driver not doing that would probably not have seen them until very late. The buildings completely blocked my view of them until I turned that bend on the opposite side. I said to my passengers that is an example of poor riding and why corner positions are so important. I don't know how much of positions is taught in standard riding but I know from RoSPA that they teach it a lot to riders. As a car driver I am not too sure but I always appreciate high level riding.

Horses are flight animals and anything they perceive as a threat can cause a situation to escalate quite drastically. Since the driver was approaching from the shadows and the horses were in the sun the horses probably weren't able to see the car that easily and the sudden noise could have caused a reaction. Even if the horses are well trained it only takes one small thing to set them off, it doesn't seem worth the risk to make any sudden loud noises

A constant stream of traffic in both directions with hardly a break at times on a 60 limit. This can be the safest option if the is a break in the traffic from the right, but not the left. Sometimes it can be easier to turn left and turn around but it is quite away to go. This is the A1 and just about the only few miles there are without duel carriageway. I've seen so many cases where someone's lack of forward planning has held them up as much as others. The classic example is ploughing on through into a meet situation that then requires either one or both to carefully manoeuvre for a tight pass, or one to back up.
The bus clip at about 4:30 is a great example. Not only does it help the bus out by stopping where they did, but had they carried on until they met the obstruction on their side, the chances are the bus would have had to take it far slower and more carefully to fit between them and the parked car, therefor the camera car would have actually been held up longer.
