The "problem" with Shiina Ringo: you can watch 20 live performances and you won't recognize her (except the voice) - she's totally polymorphic, the queen of stage metamorphosis - even during one show. I have two of her best live shows on dvd and it's totally stunning. She's one of the best show woman I've seen, really.
She's a genuine artist, both as a composer and a performer. I think she's the first person (from my knowledge) who sang while cutting apples on big stage wearing a nightgown and it felt there was nothing out of place.
@@kairukafuka6022 btw, her guitarist on expo '08 is now Aina The End's stage guitarist; and Aina recently performed Elopers with Shiina (on guitar) for a TV show
I knew you would get to her. One of top "influencers" in J-Pop/Rock history (although she is still damn active) 4-3-6-1 chord progression is widely called "Maru-Sa progression" since this song became famous. Also repeatedly used in "Unleash!!!!!"
In addition to the Marusa Progression, there are other typical chord progressions in J-Pop/ROCK, such as the Canon Progression, the Royal Progression, and the Komuro Progression, but I have long been concerned that the achievements of Tetsuya Komuro, who developed the Komuro Progression, are not so well recognized overseas.
@@RyanMear Yes, It's fun. Jazz nerds (oops) love this having 2 dominant motions (3-6 ,1-4) within 2 or 4 measures for tasty jazz approaches. Jazz guys tend to keep us Rock guys away by playing in Eb (this song) or Ab ( "Just the two of us" ) lol.
good selection. It is a song that is often discussed among musicians because of its good chord progression. 長く短い祭(Long and short festivals) are also good.very grooving song.
Omg!! Thank you, Ryan! I LOVE Shiina Ringo ♡ She is the Queen of Jpop. She also has her own band called Tokyo Jihen. She was supposed to direct the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, but before the Olympics there were a number of troubles such as gaffes by JOC officials, and she was disgusted and declined. I was really disappointed when I heard the news that she declined :"(
Sheena Ringo is one of the greatest artists in Japanese moder music. Her charisma and influence it is impossible to quantify, but i'm sure you already knew a lot about her thanks to Paul, the president of her fanclub on Mearcord lol
I discovered Shiina Ringo some weeks ago and started to listen to all of her albums (currently listening to the fifth one) and is really cool how diverse she is in her music. She can do something like this and also something like her song Morphine wich is a really heavy rock track, or something like Stem wich is a peacefull and relaxing song Im glad you reacted to her and would love to see you react to more of her music
Did some recording today with a Japanese musician who is a BIG Sheena Ringo fan. Told me I had to check her out, so here I am. I know she's the queen of Japanese rock with a wild, experimental side, so I know I'm going to love this journey. I think I'm in for a wild ride.
Rickenbacker was, as you know, the first guitar, Miku bought after Kanami-sensei urged her to get one, and Kanami apparently admired Miku's choice, but Miku might have been inspired by this song's lyrics. The lyrics are dizzying, full of metaphors, quotations, allusions, including suggestive puns, describing the various places on the Marunouchi subway line that runs through the heart of Tokyo. "Ricken 620" is mentioned in Ochanomizu (where the music store district is located).
This was also the guitar Shiina bought with her first royalty cheque, a Rickenbacker 620 in the same Jetglo finish as Miku then went on to get for her first electric. As a solid body Rick it's not like it's even a particularly popular model in their range. I'm not sure it was a conscious decision on Miku's part to get the exact same spec guitar, but it may have been an unconscious bias at the back of her mind.
@@guitarandy2406 Yeah. That Sheena's guitar was also used in Tokyo Incidents' PV released last year. And here, which never fades away - Or (or in addition to the lyrics of Marunouchi Sadistic) maybe Miku watched "Gibbs" PV or her performance. 5th single (2000) ua-cam.com/video/zldBTSx9JpE/v-deo.html
I've never been a fan of the Sweet Love Shower performance, I must admit, but I consider her one of the most versatile composers of all time and an incredible artist among my very favourites with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Prince.
I agree some ppl comment her as "last boss of jrock" Btw she has a dual cd of her and her band covering those old songs that she think has influence her
It's funny that we ask you to react on Ringo Shiina. I recently watched the second or third (i forget) episode of Band Maid Nippon. Miku was talking with Saiki about Ringo, artists who had strongly influenced them in their youth. She was quoting the song Gunjou Biyori with Ringo's rock band Tokyo Jihen. That Ringo inspired Miku to start a badass rock band is no surprise. Obviously, she is a great Japanese artist, unknown in the West. Thanks Ryan.
I am glad your introduction to Shiina Ringo was when she still had her mole and still rolled her Rs. But Marunouchi Sadistic does not really showcase the superhuman voice Shiina possessed in her early years. Unfortunately her first 2 album masterpieces do not seem to be available in the US for streaming and except for Honnou(本能) UA-cam videos from these years (which were as visually creative as the music) are blocked in the US. You can find a few low quality recordings of Japanese variety shows that give a sense of the power and emotion in her early performances such as Tsumi to Batsu (罪と罰) ua-cam.com/video/CvJkmmKRFDw/v-deo.html or GIPs(ギブス) ua-cam.com/video/kCq7jiIh6NE/v-deo.html and a club performance when she was 20 ua-cam.com/video/cJy84kXkyfI/v-deo.html
Yeah, smitten is good. Not just a great performer and voice, but now has an extensive number and range of composition, which range through rock, pop, soundtrack and orchestral arrangements. Seems Ado has covered a few of them now too. From what I have seen, Sheena has sung in at least three languages, plays keys and guitar.
This is during her rock star phase which she really was wild, maybe as wild as Courtney Love. By the way, this song has a lot of versions now, but the Tokyo Jihen's DVD "Just Can't Help it" version is so far my fav. Hopefully someone can request ここでキスして (Koko de Kisu Shite/Kiss me now) or Gibs.
So Here's a thing about Shiina Ringo. Imagine spending a few hours at some American airport on a stopover, and then thinking you've seen the US. That's where you are right now on your journey. She's a deep, DEEP dive. Unfortunately, the powers that be are vigorous in taking down any unauthorized performances from youtube.
Dude where did you find this recording??? i stumbled on it years ago and downloaded it on UA-cam because i couldn't find it on UA-cam anymore and thought others nigh enjoy it. Sony came down on me like a hammer.
I have been a Sheena Ringo fan for many years. I started out thinking I was looking at Chrissie Hynde. Then I moved on to Joe Strummer. Then David Bowie. Lately, it feels more like Rogers and Hammerstein----or possibly Brecht and Weill. Perhaps it is time to give up on the analogy game and just say it: the female GOAT of 21st century popular music. Anyone who wants to dispute this claim must spend some time with a vast songbook before I will listen. Given the large number of songs she has written in English and French, it is extremely odd that he has only had a single concert outside of the Japan in all these years. ua-cam.com/video/LOtO_TxQ6iM/v-deo.html

You would think with how much she walks backwards she would learn to use shoes that secure to her heel instead of just her toes. 🤭
Tbf most of her latter day heels for live performances after she formed the Jihen have transparent straps on them for just such a purpose.
