- My "How To Play" series is designed to help golfers play better shots from all areas on the course: from the tee to the green and everywhere in between.
This video is in response to a subscriber question from Karen Slack regarding playing shots from bunkers that are compact or have little sand in them. In this video, I offer a couple of options that will help you play better shots when faced with this situation.

Thank you very much for answering my question it's much appreciated. I will out practicing both techniques this week.
Hope you don't mind but I do have one more question for you. What allowances should I make when playing in wind. Playing on a links course this is a problem that crops up a lot and I'm never quite sure of what to do?
Loving the on course videos. I think you learn a lot more than being shown shots on a range mat
Thanks Karen. I don't mind at all, the more questions the better. I will get across to the local links course and get a video filmed hopefully this week or early next week (I'll look for the windiest day).
Our local course has bunkers with a hard dirt base and little if any sand in sections. The chipping method works with a 60 degree wedge with low bounce ( 4 degree) . The higher bounce clubs need to be delofted/forward shaft lean so the bounce doesn't lead to skulling the ball. The second method just won't work in really hardpan bunkers.
Kym, you will need to play around with the length of swing on the second shot if you find it won't work. Let me know and thanks for the comment.
My club likes to mix it up with the amount of sand in bunkers. I carry a 60 degree with 4 bounce for the no sand bunkers and a 56 degree with 12 bounce for the bunkers with sand. I swap the 56 degree to a 10 bounce if it rains.
Great video! Keep it up
Thanks :)
there is A LOT of sand in that bunker compared to where I play
It took some finding but thanks for showing me how to get out of the type of bunker I get into every week.
Top stuff.
Thanks James
great stuff, thanks
Thanks mate
Two great shots, thanks for this! Will give it a go!
Thanks Anthony
Great video. I remember seeing tiger doing practice shots of the latter version you showed here. Purposely feeling “flippy”
The open face shot give more bounce to the club. I dont understand the second option shot. Sorry my english
Just what I was looking for Thanks
most courses I play lately have very little sand
Keep it up!
Great tip! Thank you! 😉
Thank you!!! it helps :)

How would you play a shot with a steep lip from little sand? The same way?
Yes but use your most lofted wedge and if the ground allows open the face a little more
Is that a sand iron or 60 degree
It's a 54 degree Cory.
Your all the same...far too much dialogue and not enough ball striking. That's why I love watching Moe Norman, he just speaks as he hits.
Thanks for putting me in such esteemed company, appreciate it.
@@GedWaltersGolf I'm sure your a very good golfer however you do need to learn a little about getting the message across in an effective manner.
Youre allowed to feel that way.
