I did this mod on several Teles. Buy a 4-way Tele switch, and it has directions. You snip a ground wire on the neck pickup and then use a different wire for ground . The result is that position 4 is both pickups in series... thicker, louder and more 'strong' tone of the 2 pickups together. The normal position 2 of both pickups is that pretty and clear 'both on' tone of parallel. Series is both on to give a stronger, more bluesy and powerful tone. Cheap to buy and simple to wire up once you see what to do.

That walnut switch plate must look nice on the Tele. Working on the bench for a total re-wire like that makes sense. I just put a 4 way on a Thinline Tele, I did it in situ to avoid unnecessary disconnecting too many wires. To remove the pickguard (that holds the electrics and neck PuP) would have meant having to disconnect more wires (jack) and withdraw the wiring for the neck PuP from the channel in the body. It was very fiddly to do in situ, with the placement of cloths to prevent damage to the guitar surface. Plus of course having to separate and add a separate ground to the cover of the neck PuP. It worked out well and sounds great.

Oh man... Love your control plate. Woodworking is my first love! Nice work.. Do some woodworking videos dude. Show us how you made that thing... and if I missed it and you did (embarrassed face), my bad. But super cool dude. Just catching up on all my watching;-)

I made the walnut control plate and the front pickup ring for the Fire caster guitar I built to match the walnut neck . I have a video of the start of that guitar "making a brass nut". I have a ton of footage I shot of that project, just haven't had the time to put it all together yet.

Sweet!! I posted your channel on my FB Woodeso page. Not many people followng me there yet, but more and more I need a better way to communicate with a bunch of people all at once when I'm not making a video;-) Hope you get some hits! Great stuff here.

Woodeso's Guitar Mods Thank you my friend. That's super appreciated! I really need to do more with social media myself.

Tell ya what, if Davey hadn't pushed a few hits my way in the early days... I'd be sitting at 350 Subscribers like I was 5 months ago. Now I'm nearly at 2K. The other thing is keep doing what you're doing. Get involved in the community and active on people's channels you like. I attribute much of my current success to just getting involved on more popular YT channels and just trying to be positive. I never directly promote my channel on other people's comments sections. I just get involved in discussions that interest me. If people like what you've said, sometimes they'll look you up!

I have a basic (shows my level of knowledge) question - why the cloth pull back wire? Why not use plastic coated wire? Are there advantages, or is it tradition?

I just did this mod, I found that the push back cloth insulation on my Antiquity pick ups were a breeze to connect - 1) no need to strip the insulation, 2) loose cloth makes for a more flexible wire, 3) the covering does not melt like plastic insulated wires. All the plastic insulated wires took longer to work on (strip ends, rigid wire, avoid heat damage).

Hi, I did this mod 7 or 8 years ago to a relative's tele and had a problem getting the circuit to work properly, until a lead from (I think) the neck pup was disconnected. The guys at www.tdpri.com/forum/index.php are really helpful. Great video thanks.

Thanks for watching. Yes I will explain this in the next video when I connect the pups. At the very end of the video I show it in the diagram I drew up. I should of explained it in this video. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

While this was very helpful from the standpoint of things like components and soldering points, it tells the viewer virtually nothing about the overall purpose or benefits of a "4-way mod" for Tele, nor does it display the fruits of that effort, in terms of showing the effect of the mod itself on the standard controls and switching, or the tonal results. And the wiring diagram is widely available on-line. So I'm afraid that makes this particular video of very-very limited utility to most folks.

Thanks for watching, the video is mostly for people already looking to do the mod. Perhaps I should of explained the mod also.
