- Part 8 of a series charting the history of West Ham United during the four and a half years of Billy Bonds' management.
The Hammers appear to have peaked too soon. With Morley only partially fit, McAvennie suspended and Iain Dowie Cup-tied the last thing they need is to have a Tony Gale sent off in the FA Cup semi-final. The day is memorable though for the unwavering support offered by the West Ham fans. Promotion is secured by a 2-0 win over Swindon but the title is snatched away in the cruellest of ways in the last minute on the last day. Bonds will have to learn from that and strengthen in the summer if West Ham are not to make an immediate return to the second tier.

Again, I was at the majority of the matches in this video. The cup semi-final was an absolute travesty, but the supporters did the club proud. I remember an article in the newspapers on the morning of the Notts County match by Billy Bonds, stating to the effect, that promotion was achieved and that it didn’t really matter whether we won the title or not. I thought it was a rather strange quote and the team seemed to take him at his word 🤷🏼♂️

Bloody great Rob thanks so much for these memories. Was the hooter blow on the wonder stuff the radio edit or just a rarity 😂. The fans chants at the semi show that we’re the finest in the land. COYIs have a good weekend hammers everywhere ⚒👏🏻👍🏻
If you look at the bottom of the screen the referee is launching a huge greenie into a handkerchief so I added the sound effect didn't think anyone would spot it!
The sending off in the semi final ruined that game. Watching it as a neutral, saying that I wanted West Ham to beat Forest, but it was a procession when Gale was sent off.
I remember Keith Hackett saying that the rules for cautions etc changed that week.....

Some good teams in the second tier at that time. We got to the semi of FA Cup (cruelly robbed by Hackett), Sheff Wed won the League Cup and I think Oldham had a good run the season before as well so the gap in quality between most of the First Division and the best team in the second tier at that time was pretty much non-existant.
I remember being on the pitch that final day at the boylen ..i was 31 😮😮😮
Another corner turned, we go up as Champions, and play " them" in an FA Cup Final. Easily the best side in that division, and the last team "they" wanted to play in the final.
PS. We only played two games on plastic all season, and we had to play against the ref in at least one of those.
PPS: We would have our revenge. And it would be on Boundary Park grass.

Even more of a travesty with Quinn was that West Ham only sold him for something like 60 grand.
